Moved into a new house in Pittsburgh, PA. Zone 6. The front of the house faces North. The previous owner did not keep up on the shrubs and I have removed the shrubbery that was near the steps. The pictures show some type of ground cover that I am in the process of removing also. I would like ideas on different shrubs or perennials to plant. Also, I was thinking of a tree in the middle, but was not sure of what to plant. Thanks!!
Recently moved into new house, looking for design help
The ground cover is Vinca minor. Difficult to remove, and very good erosion control.
Tree- if the coldest wind comes from the north then a row of trees, not 90 degrees to the wind, but at an angle, can help deflect the wind around the house. You would want an evergreen for this. Pic 1.
Otherwise whatever tree you like the looks of and will grow in a lawn- Perhaps
Acer = Maple (any of several)
Tillia = Linden, Basswood or Lime (all these common names are used for several species)
or perhaps some fruit trees? Pic 2.
Replacement shrubs: Your house is sort of blank, perhaps something taller against the tallest parts of the walls? Then lower under the windows?
Have you thought about doing anything with the slopes?
Do visitors park their cars along the street?
Here are a few concepts.
Thank you Diana. I think those are both great designs. I would love to put in the reataining walls as you suggest, but I think cost is an issue right now. Replacing roof next week. I am in the process of removing the Vinca, slowly but surely. I think for now I will have to keep the slope and add some shrubs and mulch. I will look into the trees you suggest. I like your ideas for the steps and under window. Any suggestions on what type of shrubs? I appreciate your input!!
I do not know your zone to suggest species.
The Vinca is holding the slope in place. If you remove it there is a greater chance of the soil eroding. If you must remove it, then replace it with something similar- low, spreading, rooting as it goes.
