Happy April 1!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Good morning! We are working on a long-overdue upgrade to our writing/editing tool for the daily articles. It's a behind-the-scenes upgrade, but we did have to hit "pause" on articles for one day as we complete the switch.

If you're looking for the daily articles, I'm afraid there aren't any, and I didn't want you to wonder if we hid them or were playing a trick on you...since it is THAT day.

We would love to hear your ideas and suggestions for future articles. Do you have a topic that you'd like to see us cover in an article? If so, please post it here and we'll see what we can do with your idea!

I understand the USDA zones. But, honestly, out here in the West many, if not most of us favor the Sunset Gardening zones. Maybe these are copyrighted, but I find them to make much more sense for our climate here which takes into account the nuances of our varied microclimate zones and the dryness, altitudes, prevailing winds, wetness, etc. of our areas. The USDA zones seem much too geared to Eastern Climates.

Are you requesting an article on the subject of zones (USDA vs. Sunset?)

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Actually, despite living right smack on the East Coast, I, too, find the Sunset Zones make more sense. The USDA Zones, the one's we typically refer to, are really specific to cold weather. The USDA has a separate set of Zones for hot weather, which doesn't seem all that efficient to me. The Sunset Zones, on the other hand, take both hot and cold weather into account along with moisture, humidity, and all the myriad other nuances as you say - good work for it, btw.

I think there is probably more than enough material to do a couple of articles on Zones, especially when you consider both USDA Zones and Sunset Zones. I would find that interesting.

Terry, I can log in to DG all right, but when I get to the Guides and Information > Articles tab, all the advertisements are visible! I tried logging in and out but it doesn't change.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Interesting. Just out of curiosity, I tried going to Guides & Info, Articles and found that I don't see the adds. Of course, this sort of thing is not at all unusual when dealing with software bugs. Incidentally, I'm not complaining (about not seeing adds), just providing my 2cents for extra info on the subject. :-)

Carrie, try clearing your cache - I don't see any ads, so I'm thinking it's something you may have "snagged" when we were uploading things, especially if you don't see ads in other places on the site. If you do, let me know.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Terry, it happens on my tablet, too. Doesn't that mean it's not on my computer? It does seem to be only in my house. I will try clearing my cache when I get up.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I went to today's article about the beautiful Clivia plant, I went to make a comment, and it is telling me I have to log in with either discus, facebook or Google? whats up with that?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

OK, Terry, I did clear my cache, and I still see ads. Do I need to restart or anything?

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Linda, if you look where it says Discussion, you can just start typing in the box below that.

I've double-checked your DG settings - you are not supposed to see ads. I'm thinking you may need to clear your settings again, (cookies and cache) and see if that helps. Sometimes a snagged page can be stubborn. Hopefully that will resolve it - if not you may try googling around to see if there are some trouble-shooting tips for the browser you're using.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Carole, that is what I am talking about, I click on start discussion, and it tells me I have to log into one of three programs.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

This is a screen shot of what I get.

I just put my cursor in the Discussion box and start typing. I don't pay any attention to where it says Log In since I'm obviously already logged in.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I tried that. When I hit send, it tells me I have to log in with one of the options?

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, maybe Terry knows what the problem is. What browser do you use?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Linda, I will pass this along to the techs - we introduced Disqus as the platform for comments because it is more widely adopted (and accessible) to the public than creating a login on DG, and we want to encourage discussion among our readers. But it is my understanding that if you have a DG username and are logged in, you shouldn't have to be registered on Disqus.

That said, it is your option to create a free Disqus ID if you'd like - it will allow you to engage in discussions elsewhere too (there are several blogs and websites I visit and they use Disqus just as we now do.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Linda, the techs are working on this issue. Long story short, you should not (and will not) have to login to Disqus separately from DG in order to comment on an article. As soon as the issue is fixed, I'll post here to let you know.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks Terry.

Carole, I use Chrome.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Now I can't see the article for today. I get the 404 file not found message.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I get the same thing.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

I also get the 404 file not foundmessage. Using Firefox.

This morning, we discovered some problems with the timing of scheduling and displaying the daily articles - they were working on it earlier this afternoon, and I'm guessing that's why we can't see the currently.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Terry,
I am also seeing an ad or two during a visit. Not a big deal, but I'm paid up and shouldn't be seeing any!

I'm getting the same Disqus login request as Linda Kay mentioned, as well as, having to login a few times during a visit.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Terry, I just discovered that when I click on an article, my name disappears from the header area as if I had just logged out. It doesn't happen jumping between forums, just going to an article.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, it logs me out when I click on an article but logs me back in when I click on something else. Same with PF, it logs me out then back in.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Same here. Clicking on the article logs me out, and if I click on the article discussion box, it asks me to sign in, giving me the FB, twitter, etc options. Then when I leave the article page, I'm logged back in and everything is like normal.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

That's what's strangest, to me, that it pops you right back in!

Clarksville, TN(Zone 7a)

Mine works fine.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

My guess, from a software perspective, is that the problem probably relates to a software flag that indicates when one is/isn't logged in, a flag which for some reason goes out of scope or is otherwise unavailable or cleared when one navigates to the article page and fine otherwise. If this is the case, we are not actually being logged in and out but rather the software is unable to 'see' that we are logged in when we visit the article pages but is able to see this again once we leave the article and return to a part of the code where the login flag is again available.

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

Today the article is not showing in the designated spot on my home page. The spot labeled "Today's Articles" is blank even though navigating to the Articles page shows that today's article does exist.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

It does?

Charleston, SC(Zone 9a)

If you are questioning the assertion that today's article does exist, I've attached the evidence below. The article is about bunnies.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

No, no, I was amazed! I found it, too. I just didn't' look had enough. More like, "it does? Happily runs off to look elsewhere" instead of "oh yeah? prove it."

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We've had a few mishaps with articles since last Wednesday, and we're still working out the bugs.

One of them has to do with staying logged in - we are all experiencing this issue (which is also why you may see ads in that area - it doesn't recognize you as a subscriber with ads turned off.)

Bear with us...we should have most of these issues ironed out this week.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Terry, it's just nice to know it's not something I'm doing or wrong with my computer. it's everybody.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for keeping us posted Terry.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Goodness! I had no idea that article on bunnies had made it through the submission process... will have to go look for it! Oddly, the thumbnail is totally wrong (from another article altogether), possibly from the way I submitted it when the new editor software first went "live." I'll see if Terry can fix that at some point.
