Spring 2015 Plant Swap DISCUSSIONS

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Seq, the GW swap is always held in the same place, which is just 15 minutes from me.

It's a beautiful house with lovely gardens and koi ponds. It might be worthwhile for you to stop by at that swap on your way down to Muddy's. I hope their peonies are blooming by then.

The actual swapping isn't organized that well, so I prefer to just go and admire the plants.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

GW?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oops, sorry, Gardenweb.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't think I'll stop by that swap, I'm not there enough to know any of the members. I really only go on GW when I've gone through all the DG stuff that interests me.

Hey G, that Monkshood you gave me last year has made it through the winter and has sprouted a bunch. It looks like it's spread a little. I'm excited!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I am excited too--hoping it will thrive in its new, sunny spot.

I always thought they needed shade--but have now learned otherwise.
I moved it last year to a full-sun spot in the back of my YUK bed--so--pretty dry.
I see some sprouts already coming up. This year will tell....

Send pictures--so will I--if they bloom nicely. G.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Greenthumb, I would love to have some of your Baptisia alba.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Got ya Muddy.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

You bet I'll post pics of it's bloom G. Mine is planted in bright shade til about 2pm then hot sun til about 5pm. As time passes it will get more shade as it's near a young Dawn Redwood.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

I can fill some of your 'wants".

--I have oodles of Coleus growing. getting too tall again--but I hate to pinch them
the 2nd time. May have to...
I have lots of "Careless Love" and the Wassabi Coleus (chartreuse in color--big growers)
And can share some of the "frilly" ones too.

I can cut tops off of a couple of AW Begonia for you as well. OK if I just stick them in water
now--and YOU root them further? My Mama is still in lounging around with all her tall canes.
Don't want to cut them all off this early.

I can deffinitely, dig you up a clump of Garlic Chives from my neighbor's bed.
Will just stick it in a pot. Maybe you could swing by one day before the Swap to get all these?

I also have a lot of Dwarf blue/purple Iris that I dug up last fall. They are all starting to grow--
and will, probably, bloom before the Swap.???
And--I have several pots of wintered over Lobelia Cardinalis.

********************************************
I would like from you--
One well rooted Inky Fingers ( I just have one)
One bunch of clustered Bell flowers. I lost one--still have the other. It is spreading
as it is in the sun. The other one was in more shade...

LMK--Gita

BTW--Sally--HD still has the sale going on for all the Bonnies 4" and 5" pots
of veggies and herbs. 5 for $10.
All the ones you mentioned wanting you can get there.
Also--4" individual pansies are 88 cents. (reg. $1.49)

THIS SALE WILL END WEDNSDAY NIGHT.

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks for noting that HD sale for us, Gita! Most of my seedlings did fine while I was away, but I think half my sweet peppers ('Carmen') might be goners.

I got in a rush getting tomatoes sowed before we left and just sprinkled some "Carnival Mix" seeds around -- they are ones from my garden a few years ago, a mix of types & colors. Saved seeds when making "Carnival Bruschetta" LOL. So my extra tomatoes might be unknown heirlooms this year -- but all ones that are delicious and did well for me!

Believe it or not, the ADR catalog just came for fall planting. So look around your garden and imagine what you'd like to add for next spring -- fragrant hyacinths? cute mini daffodils? fancy "butterfly" daffs? species tulips? :-)

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I will dig up some Canna 'Australia' if anyone's interested. It's hardy and spreads slowly by clumps: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/106911/

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Muddy, is your canna up yet? I removed the straw mulch today but there's no sign of them yet.

Certain plants in my yard have been very slow to wake up. The peonies are only now popping up, but Holly and Ric posted pictures of their peonies last week.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

watch out for hostas that you may have forgotten, I came close to digging into one today, just bare nubs showing and I had forgotten about putting them there.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

My hostas aren't up yet, either, but I saw that my next door neighbor (who has dozens of hostas) had at least an inch or two of pips showing. I have a bunch of summer bulbs to plant, but I can't dig yet because not everything has come up.

I'm offering an unknown 3rd year Japanese maple seedling. It has red leaves and is slow growing (only about 2-3 feet tall) so it might be a dwarf.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, I'd like a dark-foliage coleus, lime green ornamental sweet potato, and a hardy banana. :)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

muddy--

That dark-leafed canna looks like the one I grow. Does it have reddish-orange blooms?
I always dig mine up.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

It looks like I'm going to have some coreopsis to dig up. I think it's 'Zagreb' (will know for sure in a couple of weeks).

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have lots of my noid Blackeyed susan with narrow leaves, it spreads and seeds a lot, (maybe I shouldn't have admitted that LOL) I could take it all to the wastelands and let it go crazy there.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have a similar BES -- it's a great "filler," and not hard to pull if it shows up where you don't want it. I'd like a piece of it, Sally... I can put it along the back edge of the treeline, with the rose of sharon (Hibiscus syriacis)... trying to give the new neighbors something to look at that will take care of itself.

Holly, do you have another hardy banana? I've given up on the bigger edible-fruited bananas, except for a dwart one in a pot I'm dragging in and out each year. But I've got the perfect spot for a hardy one!

If anybody wants to purchase a Dicentra (bleeding heart) 'Valentine' ($3 each, 3-5 eye) or 'Luxurient' (1.50 each, 2-3 eye), speak up FAST, as Yehudith is taking the extras home at noon today. Terri & I sorted the ADR plants yesterday, and they look great.

Likewise, if somebody wants to try a "bowl" lotus (eg, small) in a water garden pot, post ASAP, as Dusty is packing my box. Hard to believe that something so exotic looking is hardy! And at wholesale price, they are $11 each. At Lilypons, they are $39.

ed. to add prices for the bleeding heart... I'm pretty sure you won't see these under $10 anywhere...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

SSG and Jill got you both. Hardy Bananas haven't peeked up yet but I will bring them if I have them.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oops, I guess I missed the deadline for bleeding hearts!

Jill, let me know if there are any left still.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SSG, you can have 1 of each from my Dicentra, $4.50 for both. Will that do it for you?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, that should be good!

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

SSG, yes, my cannas are up - barely - just the tips are showing.

Gita, the blooms on mine are very red - no orange in them. I believe it's one of the only hardy cannas available.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita - if you have any spares may I have a couple of your Dwarf blue/purple iris'? Your babies that you've shared previously are doing great!!!

Sally - I'd love some inky fingers if they're all not spoken for...what a pretty plant!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle--

Good to hear from you again!
You are the first to ask for the Dwarf iris. How many would you like?

Right now--they are ALL in a communal, shallow saucer with soil.
They are starting to grow their leaves.

Should I just pull them out and put them in a baggie??? or-
I could pot them in the 1lb strawberry trays with just enough soil to cover the roots.

There are quite a few divisions. Hmmmm....I think i will pot them up in some way.
Maybe 2 + per tray. Some divisions are quite small.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

We'd be happy to have a couple of the inky finger coleus too, if there are any still available.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Now offering:

Lysimachia ciliata 'Firecracker' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/976/

Wood Spurge - Euphorbia amygdaloides var. robbiae http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/76535/

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

That firecracker is just beautiful. I would love some.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Holly - you will have some.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

David, I'll take some of that Firecracker too.

I was reading how invasive people say it is. Do you think if I planted it in an area that is mostly shade and on the drier side it would play nice?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Got you down Jeff.

My Firecracker is in partial shade, uninspiring clayey soil, and seldom watered. In several years it has only spread a foot or so in any one direction.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I am NOT up to date with my haves list. Will work on it....
So--like many others--i am listing here what I have available to share.
****************************************
--Potted up Dwarf Iris in, in plastic strawberry trays. About 2 plants
per tray. I now have 7 of these to offer. Chantelle--how many did you want?

--I also have some larger pots of the deep purple, tall, bearded iris from
my Uncles yard. These have been in the pots for 2 years now--need liberation!-3

--I have 2-1gal.-sized pots of (growing) Gooseberries to offer.
Anyone? Gooseberry jam :o)

--I have 2 more well-growing Figs, "Desert King" available in 5" pots.
Seems not all my cuttings made it. NOT dead--bur not leafing out either...
A waiting game....I am sure they will...

--Two small "Maya" Brugs--from cuttings--not leafing out too well, but trying...
--One Dr. Seuss Brug from cuttings--growing.

--Asst. Coleus--not sure yet which I want to keep or give away. Pot luck...

--9 pots of Brazilian Plume flower--well growing ..big leaves....will bloom this summer.

--2 pots of wintered over, rooted cuttings of my big, white Azalea--"Delaware Valley".

--Will be digging up a lot of clumps of "Frans Hals" DL's at my daughters.
Each clump will yield many divisions of this DL.

This is IT--for now. Will try hard to put all this in my "Haves and Wants...."

Let me know here if you want anything--or D-mail me.

Gita

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

We would love to try a fig, Gita. Thank you.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Quote from ssgardener :
Muddy, is your canna up yet? I removed the straw mulch today but there's no sign of them yet.

SSG: To correct what I said earlier, my Cannas are NOT up yet. What I thought were Canna sprouts actually are a Culver's Root plant that I bought last year. That explains why I have a circle of Lesser Celandine about 1' in diameter in that area of the bed: they were "bonus plants" (LOL) that came with the Culver's Root!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Where did you purchase the Culver's Root?

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thank you GT. The plant files were making me wonder about that one a bit but I have a tendency to like plants that are a little more aggressive.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'd say Firecracker spreads slowly but surely and keeps going. Like false dragonhead does

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh, that's perfect! I have lots of experience with the false dragonhead.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Have to also say the purple early foliage color fades to dull green after bloom. SO don't plan to use the foliage color in summer.
