Greenthumb, I don't remember where I bought the Culver's Root. It might have been at a Meadows Farms that gets some random natives at the end of the summer. Judging from the tags (or lack thereof) on them, some seem to have been grown by small native plant nurseries. I get the feeling that Meadows Farms offers to help them offload their extras.
Spring 2015 Plant Swap DISCUSSIONS
If it had Lesser Celandine in it, the plant was likely wild-dug rather than nursery raised.
Good point; I hadn't thought of that.
Pat---
Got you down for a FIG. Do you need any helpful advice on how to deal with this?
As if I know.....Not likely--as you both seem to know everything about plants.
My potted starts of Lobelia Cardinalis are starting to look pretty sad.
Perhaps, too cold and too wet in the small pots. I moved them to a sunnier location.
You asked for 3---I hope I can get you 2 that are doing OK if the weather cooperates..
I may be able to get a couple more from my prolific propagator neighbor.
She said today that they would do better in the ground--NOT in pots.
Too late now! She grew them out for me in a cramped window box.
I took each of them out and potted them up in pots last fall.
Franky--I think they got too wet....
*****I am not taking any more requests on these for now. Sorry!****
Gita
The swap food thread is up! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1390911/
Thanks, Gita. If the lobelia are fewer than you had hoped, that's okay. You just never know.
Gita, cardinal flowers are wetland plants that require a fair amount of sun. Doubt that the problem with them is being too wet.
They are in small, 4" pots and have been sitting on patio concrete floor.
In a tray, though--so there would be room for drainage.
Would birds be picking off the foliage?
I swear--some of the pots the leaves are almost gone.
Just went out and took these...
1--this is normal...eg good. They all looked like this..
2--this is looking sad,,,they were not like this a week ago.

Gita, I'd like a fig, please. From those you sent, I managed to get one growing nicely this spring... the second one that rooted dropped its leaves mid-winter, and I'm not sure if it will leaf out again or if it's dead.
Gita, we have had some very warm days of late. In the second photo one can see that the soil is drying and pulling away from the sides of the pots. Put a solid tray under the pots, these are wetland plants. Mesh tray on concrete = too much drainage and drying. Plants should recover if given sufficient moisture and sun.
Will do! off to work for now. The rain should keep these babies happier.
G.
Chantell, I had 'Inky Fingers' down for you.
Gita, I have seen birds pecking at Sedums. Maybe they just wanted water?
Add 'Inky Fingers' for Pat.

Gita - do you have figs again? If - only if you have one to spare I would love one...please and thank you.
donner--
I have 3 bird baths full of water by now...what would they need from some measly leaves?
However--it does look like some of the leaves are just broken off.
They could not have declined to such an extent in just a week.
Chantelle--YES! I have Figs again! Last chance for any cuttings. There is
NO more big Fig tree. If I gave you some earlier--how did it do?
These cuttings were taken Nov. 1st of last year. They are growing well and have leaves.
But--they have been either under lights or at a full sun window.
If you take one--you will have to deal with it as if it is a Houseplant for at least 2 more years.
Then--if it has grown, and been potted up to a gallon pot and it is doing well--
you will still have to protect the root zone from frost every winter...for as long as yu can.
They are now in 5" pots. Still rooting and making leaves. Do you want still want one?
G.
I just updated my Haves and Wants and "Promised to".....
Please take a look. G.
Umm, Chantell... scuffing toe in dirt... I should be too embarrassed to ask, but if you have any Maypop babies this spring, I'd like one, please. Shouldn't I be seeing some sign of mine by now? *sigh*
Jill maypops emerge late.
Jill, this is my second attempt with maypops. I'm really hoping it shows up soon!
Gita - sadly they are the only thing that you've shared with me that didn't make it. :( I believe it was the big fig tree that had the sweetest when you were so kind to let everyone do a taste test at Sally's a couple years back. If those are gone...I will gladly wait patiently till a time you have some from the big one again. No worries...thank you so much!!!
Jill - Sally's correct...those (esp with the cold winter) won't show their faces till closer to Memorial Day. I am more then happy to plan a lunch date and bring you some though at that time. Will that work?
I'm up for a lunch date any time! Weekend play date with the girls, even better.
If anybody wants to swing by and pick a big bouquet of daffodillies, this is the time... those beautifully scented butterfly and double daffs have just started opening. :-)
Thanks Greenthumb,
Gita, If you don't any any other takers on the Brugs, I would be glad to have one or two, I can never seem to keep them going from year to year. So if someone else is interested pass them on to them first.
Gita - I'd love a brug...are these Dr. Seuss by chance (Jill killed me w/the pic)
I have 3 cuttings available--but the "Maya" was too young last fall when
I took the cuttings and they have been struggling.
The original cutting dried up--and the new shoot came from the base.
The two Mayas I have are really small--but alive.
The Dr. Seuss cutting is doing OK. Not spectacular (like donner's), but OK.
I still cannot believe it was that big from just a cutting the year before.
You have the knoack of all knacks!
Donner--can you share what the Maya cutting looks like that I gave you?
How is it doing? The other two are shown below. As id the Dr. Seuss.
Here is what the Maya looks like. As you can see--the orig. cutting is all dry
and shriveled up. You will have to nurse them along this summer.
Baby them...feed them...and be endlessly patient.
Chantelle--I will give you the Dr. S.--and Holly--maybe you can nurse the 2 Mayas
to grow a bit better....Maybe it needs fertilizing? I have not done it at all--just water.
Pretty sad--but this may be my fault that I took the cuttings a bit late.
Sally, how big of a pot is your Redbud growing in?
Muddy, I guess it is called a 2 gal nursery pot? a little bigger than a milk jug. Easy to move.
Woot - woot...thank you GIta!!!
Jill--
Clicking on your Article today--"Group Buys" comes up as "page not found".
I have tried several times today to open it. G.
Jill - I tried as well...same result :(
our article management continues to have problems.
Gita, I have not yet read Jill's article, but if you go to the Forum page, you can find the link to Group Buys.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/buyinbulk/all/
Sally--That's OK....I read it the first time around....I was just trying
to see if this issue had been fixed.
G.
You did better than I did, Gita -- I couldn't find it at all yesterday! The techs are trying to figure out if I need to re-submit it via the new system.
Thanks for letting me know. :-)
Oh my goodness, I have so much monarda! D: I knew they were aggressive spreaders but I had no idea.
If anyone would like any beebalm, please let me know!
They're great hummingbird attractors. I'm pretty sure one that I have is Raspberry Wine, and the other is an unknown.
I'll take some!
Got you down, Muddy!
I was finally feeling better today, enough to at least wander around the yard even if I didn't get much done. I've been down with "the crud" (bronchitis), all but nailed to the couch this past week. Things are popping up!
Anybody want some variegated vinca? Yep, it's popping up along the foundation wall again, plenty of extra shoots to share... I probably won't bring it to the swap unless there's interest. It does seem less thuggish than the green vinca major.
There's definitely more catnip out there than Eliot needs... at least half a dozen big plants I could dig & pot.
Oh, and Martina has a whole bin of leftover pieces of her pretty white water lily! She really went after it this spring, dug it out of a bunch of places where she didn't want it, did the same with her clump of cattails... Her little pond looks so nice now! If you want some hardy water lily or cattails, just let me know. I'm not sure what kind of water lily it is, as it came with the house. I'm going to try a piece in a pot of clay dirt, sunk down into a 22" water garden container.
I have some pruning to do, and this is the perfect time of year to stick some cuttings... Anybody in the "market" for black pussy willow or corkscrew willow? Looks like my little dappled japanese willow 'Hikiro Nishiki' could use cutting back, also.
Jill, how did you Nishiki willow handle this winter? Sally was saying hers was not looking so good.
I'm glad you're feeling better, Jill.
I'll try some of the water lily pieces. I've never had any luck with them - they don't bloom and become mush in my pond - but maybe these will do better because they're hardy.
SSG, I need to look closer at my dappled willow... not sure if it's leafing out yet or not... but I remember thinking last fall it was going to need spring pruning.
