This sounds like fun. I'm in.
2015 Grow-Along Challenge: Squash Wars
I am sort of new to gardening, and the bugs usually get my squash, but I am willing to give it a try. I got these squash seeds from a coworker who brought them over from india 25 years ago. I can't wait to try them! Do you have to know the name of the squash to grow it? I call my squash seeds Padmas because neither of us know exactly what kind of squash it is.
kilngod. I believe this is your PA Dutch Neck pumpkin http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/91978/
Like Terry, I will be growing Tatume -- it has become the squash of choice for my garden. Picked young it is like zucchinni, let it get medium mature and its flavor reminds me of cushaws , and finally matures to a beautiful medium sized golden-orange 'pumpkin'-great for pies and earthy vegetable soups.
It just keeps on going thru the summer heat (and here in south Texas, we have a lot of heat), ... provided I can kill the first generation of squash bugs
Farmerdill, Thanks! Thar she blows! Editing to include this name.
Look at all those squash varieties! Our neighbors are going to be running for the hills!!!
Just remember, you can change your mind at any time up until we formally launch the grow-out. (And since this is a challenge and not a contest, we're going to be pretty relaxed about it anyway; if your first attempts fail early on to bugs or weather, you can try again with something different if you've got enough time in your zone.)
I finally located and ordered my seeds. decided to grow a couple of pumpkin varieties, so my dear grandchildren may pick from my pumpkin patch. I'll list the names later.
Here are my choices...so far
Goldy (a gold zucchini)
Cha Ching (zucchini)
Sweet Reba (acorn squash)
Honey Nut (a small butternut)
I just pulled the trigger and have these coming along with a new to me tomato and a couple of peppers.
If you are new to using PlantFiles, send me a D-mail and I'll give you some one-on-one time and show you how to use it.
If your squash isn't in Plantfiles yet, let me know and I'll help you get it added.
Hi, I'm new to the garden and going to try and grow
PUMPKIN Livingston
Squash Early summer crookneck
PUMPKIN California red
looking for a purple squash
My seeds came today! (just before the next round of freezing rain/sleet/snow)
Two of the packages...Sweet Reba Acorn and Honey Nut Butternut have so many seeds in the packs that I've decided to share.
The first 4 people who post here and ask, I'll send you 10 seeds. I have 20 extra seeds of each variety, so if you have a preference, let me know.
These are hard-shelled winter varieties...great for baking and soups.
Ok, who wants some seed????
Melody, that is very nice of you. I have enough to grow right now, so I''m passing. I got the 4 packs of seeds I requested, but waiting on the pumpkin seeds. One is a Japanese black variety and the other is a striped variety. Hopefully, the packets will have the botanical names.
I want in but haven't staked a claim yet. Please count me in for zucca trombetta at least. Since newer canning regulations have nixed squash I have only planted what we can eat fresh or cool store plus a little for the freezer.
I'll take part. I will probably only grow a couple varieties that are new to me, but I have/have ordered about six total.
howconnie, send me a Dmail with your address and I'll send you some seeds. Which one would you prefer?
I can't tell about your seedling for sure, but the see size looks similar to a pumpkin.
Here's our brand new thread to officially kick the challenge off: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1387818/
