Betty, please contact your insurance company. A few years ago, we had a pipe burst, and insurance covered it. If they still say no, call the company headquarters. They may give you more attention than local agent.
Finished my mat and sealed it. Will post pics asap!
8th Annual DG Christmas Floormat Workshop pt 2
I got notice that mine is sitting at the post office "they couldn't deliver it"
Feel better about that!

Love how you all get so creative
Looks great Julie
Did you put 3 coats of finish on it?
This message was edited Nov 15, 2014 5:58 PM
Betty have you posted what kind of varnish we need to buy?
Julie that is awesome!
Satin varathane ,would imagine any make if you have some on hand
Think michaels or Walmart in their craft section has a finish
I would not get semi gloss or gloss as it would look like a piece of plastic
Yes, 3 coats of varnish! I love blue with snowmen things, so I did the border in blue. Started doing the stencils and of course, the paint went behind the stencil (my fault; just can't seem to get stenciling right)! So, I had the press on snowflakes, used them, then painted on some blue stars! Put the glitter on after one coat of varnish, then gave two more coats! I love it and so do the kids. Moma wants one, now, but I have to get some other things done first. So, how many days until Christmas? LOL
Betty sorry to hear about your flood troubles. My basement flooded back in 2009. It rained so much that the ground was saturated and the water backed up through the the drains! The sump pump was working fine, but the water had no where to go, It rained HARD for 3 days non stop.
It ruined so much stuff, but a lot of it was covered by the insurance because it was considered a Septic system failure. Some of the things were irreplaceable, though. The dampness even curled the pages in books that were well above the water level. I feel for anyone that has to go through a flood. I did learn a very valuable lesson ...store everything in the basement in totes, not boxes. At least the totes are water proof as long as they are not totally submerged.
Almost everyone who had a basement around here had some level water damage, even people that had never had water in their basements before. We had to rip out the carpet and replaced it with ceramic tile. it ruined all my shelving, because it was pressed wood, so it disintegrated once it got wet. What a mess.
OHhhhhhhhhh, that does sound nasty Nanny! press board shelving wet becomes an icky mess pretty quickly.
Your mat looks really good ,Julie! I am not surprised your mom wants one. I wouldn't mind having one myself, lol. I collect Snowmen of all kinds. I wouldn't hesitate one second to add that to my collection. :) Maybe I can try one next year.
Betty and Nanny, I am so sorry you both had to deal with flooding. I lost everything to Katrina- house was completely underwater! And the insurance company made it even worse by making us do an itemized inventory of everything we lost! This caused even more emotional trauma but also health problems. I never had pleurisy in my life but I get it 4 times that year after Katrina. I get it at least once a year now. My oldest daughter gets upper respiratory infections and bronchitis every winter. So, be careful cleaning things up and make sure there is no mold! And if anything has mildew or mold, trash it no matter how precious it may be!
I will make moma a floormat... just have to get some other things out of the way first.n Still have 2 more pairs of elf slippers to make before Thanksgiving! I'll be working on those next week. Colt's family will be here the week of Thanksgiving, so I don't know how much I'll get done that week. But I now I'll be very happy and busy with them! :)
So sorry you got hit by Katrina, Julie, I can't imagine going through that. I saw the reports on the news and it was still hard to comprehend the devastation that Katrina left behind. We only had about a foot of water, less in some spots and that was bad enough. There were people in parts of KY who lost lives and houses that were swept away in the flood waters. We were very lucky in comparison. Glad to hear you will get to spend time with your family. Our plans are still up in the air for Thanksgiving, we are trying to figure it out. Everybody has somewhere else that they need to be. That makes it hard to get us all in one place at once. My brother's oldest son lives in Nashville TN so they are going there Thanksgiving Day. My daughter has to go to her Granny's on her Dad's side, I have two nephews and a niece that have to work an all nighter at Walmart, so it could be a small dinner this year. But I will still give thanks for all the friends and family and the blessings I have, no matter whether we end up having a big feast or a modest meal.
That's why our family Thanksgiving will the the following Saturday. No one has to be anywhere else. We do the same at Christmas. By going to the next Saturday, everyone can clear their schedule and do their own thing on the actual holiday. We started this when two of our grands were moved out of state by their mom. They asked if we would wait for them and of course we did. Then we realized it made the holiday much more stress free. For 15 years my hubby and I spent Christmas on the road going to pick up the grands...Christmas dinner was at Waffle House.
Karen, you've got it all together re gatherings.
The years I spend Christmas in Florida we gather the week before, nobody is flitting here/there, we have the entire day, thanksgiving, Christmas is when you make it, doesn't have to bea specific date
As for flooding, could have been much worse..now under control
Nanny, Katrina left behind a lot of physical damage, but the emotional damage is something I still have to deal with. But I am here and we were very blessed by so many DG friends to help us get back on our feet!
We are having Thanksgiving on Wednesday because Destiny and Colt have to visit others on Thursday. So, I have them all day Wednesday, with all my children, my grandchildren, and moma here! :)
Now I need to get busy on Liam's elf slippers. Got to get his and Colt's finished before they come next week!
It has always worked for us to use the date that fits us best. Thanksgiving is on my daughter's farm. She said the count so far is 39 and that's not including her hubby's family that usually comes too. DGD in TN and her family are coming to surprise me. She couldn't stand not telling me LOL. I need to get a big batch of gingerbread cookies ready. Every year I bring cookies, frostings and all sorts of sprinkles for the kids to decorate. Keeps them busy for a good hour and of course is always a good photo session, especially with the wee ones. They just keep eating everything they can get their hands on. After dinner we turn it into a celebration for Jojo's birthday. He'll be three just a few days before. The year he was born was our Thanksgiving day. My DD daughter was fretting and stewing and finally I told her "Go get out of here, go hug that new grandson, we can handle dinner".
I'm happy to hear that lots of us have traditions around the holiday that include "a different day". I was raised that we celebrate on Saturday so everyone could go spend that Thursday/Thanksgiving with the "other side of the family". It has worked for us EXCEPT when teens have jobs that require them to work Saturday... they generally have been able to get it off. I used to volunteer to work Thanksgiving day if they would guarantee me Saturday off when I was working crisis.
I love traditions, what makes the holidays special.
Ahhh surprise spoiler
That's what DGS and wife are doing...volunteering to work Thursday for Sat. off.
We love our traditions too and the new ones we are making.

Sometimes there are good reasons to "spoil the surprise" so the whole visit can be even more enjoyable.
Yes, I wanted to be able to enjoy all my children and grandchildren at the same time without anyone having to rush somewhere else. We have some activities planned for the little ones. Liam will not be with us for Christmas because his mom has him this year, so that's why I'm trying to get the elf slippers finished by Thanksgiving. I want to see their faces when they unwrap them! On Thursday, I'm either going shopping with the kids or going to volunteer at a church if the kids stay with their dad. I will be blessed either way! ♥
I love 'surprises' Pat..lol
So I would have been disappointed to be told, but that is just me
You will all be so very use this week, likely no time to be working on floormats
I had thought I'd have seen a couple before thanksgiving
Enjoy Julie
Betty, we get so inundated with Christmas ads etc before Halloween and Thanksgiving that I tend to put off "Christmas" decorations until after Thanksgiving. That's when I start with decorations and things like that. I don't like to rush the season and I don't want it to be three months long. Just me I guess....
Sean and I will be doing ours then.....
Oh, I will, Betty! I can't wait to see Liam! We are taking family pictures on Thanksgiving, so I will post them as soon as my DIL edits them and sends them to me!
Barb, I'm with you! Already tired of Christmas ads! My kids are older now, so i don't even look at the ads. Do most of my shopping online. Joined ebates because I get cash back when I shop online! Here is a link if anyone is interested!

I've already earned about $10 in the past two weeks!
Y'all have a good day!
Betty, I do think I will make a floormat like yours for my mom (and one for me!). LOL
And Miss Reindeer is cute! :)
Well, one good thing came out of this mess, I got to catch up on all the threads I follow. Betty, you must be so proud when the "students" start to show the finished floor mats and wine glass candle holders. They are all wonderful.
Before leaving NY, I had a couple of mishaps and managed to miss the last step on a ladder and then a few days later, fell down a short flight of stairs onto my right knee. I thought I had just bruised it and that the pain would go away.
For the past two weeks, I have tried to stay off it and not walk around unless really necessary. One of my friends, Lois, taught me how to apply an ace bandage and knee brace. Judy, drove me to the Urgent Care and has been my driver for the past couple of weeks. I have been in pain and finally agreed to get an xray. The results are no breaks or fractures but I need an MRI, which is scheduled for tomorrow. Dr. thinks I might have torn something. Any prayers would be greatly appreciated. I'll let you know the results.
.
Sending prayers Mittsy, drats not good, sometimes torn is more painful amd longer to heal then a break..so glad you've people by your side to help out.
Yes, am proud of the gals that decide they want to try something new
I also learn so much as they put some of themselves into the projects and I go, 'ahhh never thought of that'
Sorry to hear you are having such trouble Mittsy. I will be praying for you that all goes well.
Sending my prayers too Mittsy. Knee injuries are always so slow to heal. I'm glad you are down south now and don't have to deal with this snow.....
Oh Mittsy, so sorry, sure hope it ends up being not too serious. Knee problems are always so difficult.
Sending prayers your way Mittsy. So sorry to hear you injured your knee.
Thunder, got your payment for the kit today
Many thanks
How are you doing Mittsy? Have you had the MRI yet? What did it show?
Norm's cast came off yesterday. Hooray!!! He was really getting testy there at the end of it. He was soooooo frustrated. Now he needs to deal with the pain of getting those muscles going again. But he will.....
That's wonderful news Barb
Glad to hear Norm has the cast off! Will he be going to physical therapy?
WOW, listening to the news, and they are saying western N.Y. has 7 feet of snow, and it is still falling. Many buildings are falling is, as they can't handle the weight.
Now for flooding this weekend, a newsman was saying snow converted to water will be about 6". Hopefully cold front remains for their sake
Have you started you Matt LndaKay?
I'm getting anxious
Last night wehen Rita was sewing table runners we were laughing, I was more excited than she to see the work cmng alng
