when do I pick this squash?

Kensington, NY

Consider this is about the right size, formed about three weeks ago
with the stem near the fruit showing woody looking streaks now-
should I pick it?
(pic 1)
I have been battling what looks like fungus with this plant all year,
with the results that That squash is the _only_ one-other blossoms look like
this after they bloomed.
(pics 2- 3 )

the plant stem looks like the last pictures. It looks like yellow brown, close up,
and has knobs. I tool off all the diseased leaves that were close to the ground
and I have plucked off the mildewed looking leaves each week.

thanks,

Here is a picture of the plant stem- I have tried to put more good soil around it and water as needed.

That is a buttercup winter squash. You may harvest when the skin is tto tough to dent with a finngernail. It is best to leave it on the vine as long as you can, but harvest before a hard frost.

Thank you- I have seen this advice before about the skin-I pierced the skin with a fingernail yesterday- I did apply some pressure, but it was not too hard.

Then it's not ready...they should be hard like a pumpkin.

I picked it when the skin was hard- not cooked yet. Thanks for the advice!
I should keep it in a cold place, right?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

50 - 75 degrees, low humidity.
