Are my big max pumpkins ready to harvest

Signal Hill, CA

This is my first pumpkin patch.I planted the seeds around mid may so they have been growing for around 3 months now. I was wondering whether I can harvest it now or have to wait. The first image is of my pumpkin patch around half a month ago, now the foliage has significantly reduced. The second picture is the first pumpkin that formed. Given the size of the pumpkins do you recommend cooking it or being used as a decorative item.

Well, they will keep better on the vine from now until frost, if it is your goal to carve them for Halloween.

Not sure about the flavor of Big Max, I usually eat Lumina or the smaller orange ones. Might be tough, so needs long, moist cooking, or cut into smaller chunks before cooking.

Thanks for your opinion but there isn't much foliage left.

Check your packet for harvest info and how to store once harvested or Google the type of pumpkin for harvest. The pumpkins are very pretty.

If they were in my area, I would have to be careful that the pumpkin bug didn't come in and take over.

When you do harvest them, leave part of the stem in tack - as they will keep longer that way.

I'm sure their skin is so hard by now that you cannot pierce it with your fingernail? That is a good indicator for me on maturity and harvest of pumpkins and winter squash.

Some pumpkins are better for eating than others. I like to decorate with my pumpkins, then eat them later (multi purpose). I like to save the seed and roast them (but again some varieties have better seed for eating than others). Did you buy it for a eating pumpkin?

Happy Pumpkin Harvest!
