Freezing Home Grown Melons

Mount Juliet, TN(Zone 7a)

Hi. Im wondering if anyone has tried freezing home grown melons (cantaloupe, honeydew & sugar baby watermelon)?? Ive found quite a few websites that say there are several ways to do this. 1- cut/ball fruit & freeze on tray before bagging. 2- cut/ball fruit, sprinkle w/sugar, freeze on tray before bagging and 3- cut/ball. Make a simple syrup. Pour over fruit. Freeze in containers/bags. Right now I have 5 cantaloupe & 2 honeydew in the frig. 1 or 2 cantaloupe may be over ripe. Im wondering if being over ripe will matter , if Im making a syrup to put it in? Also, because I dont want to freeze a large amount in one container Im thinking of trying to put fruit in syrup and pour into either ice cube trays or mini muffin tins. Once they freeze I'll put them into freezer bags. Has anyone done this?? Anyone have any other other ideas for freezing small amounts? I have quite a few more cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon that will be ready to pick. It would be nice to be able to freeze some to enjoy later. Thanks for any replies.

I have frozen Cantaloupe and Honeydews for my fruit smoothies. I simply cut them and freeze on cookie sheets, and once frozen, transfer to ziploc freezer bags.

I'll be interested to see the processes that others have used.

I've done the same thing tlm1 indicated - with cantaloupe and watermelon. Then used them in slushies at later time. Very chilling and refreshing to drink. I had a elderly lady tell me that was what she did, so I tried it. It works. The elderly ladies comment was that she loved the fruit so much, she had it year round.

Not sure I would want to mess with fruit that was overripe.

Goodluck!

tlm1 and brendak654 Thank You both for your replies. How long did your frozen melons last? I read that if freezing melons without the syrup they will only last 1-2 months. With the syrup they will last 10-12 months. The article also said that the syrup helps to preserve them and keep their flavor longer. So far I havent been able to freeze any. Its all been eaten!! Im wondering what else you can use the frozen fruit for. Im sure there are recipes. Have either of you used it for anything other than smoothies?? Again, Thank you for replying!! Hope you both have a good night.
