Plant Propagation Part 4 -The Basics
JU, do you have beans? Have you ever deep fried them with a beer batter on them? Sounds so good. I am going to buy some just to try it. If you have I would like to know if you par boil them first. Maybe I will check the recipe forum too.
I have never had any luck growing beans. But never really put a lot of effort into it either.
Shane, my yard worker, is going to be here at 6 o'clock in the morning tomorrow. To beat the heat. and Laura my house cleaner is coming at 8 o'clock. Boy, you should have heard Bob moaning and groaning over that. I told him, "Just think, getting them both in here and done in one day". So he decided it would be nice to have it all done. And he soon got over it.
But, our heat is suppose to be hanging on for another week at least. I would not like working in the heat like these 2 do. Laura couldn't believe we don't have AC. But, we just don't have that many days normally when we would need it.
I have picked those beans three times , and still have more , I steam in butter , about all , easy , fast , and ate , that is about it ..
Getting set to plant red shades Gailardia , last years did not make it through winter , so here we go again ... .
Nobody here like anything I grow except the tomatoes ,, I eat everything though ,,
I was digging stella daylily and feverfew plants for one of my sisters this evening , they get planted tomorrow ?
I get chocolate mint. (granny likes it Say what ???????? Have , and peach tree cutting scion to graft , later ,,
Silly huh ?^_^
To much digging in the fall ,,, phew I'm exhausted ,, lol 86 degrees , nice long sunny day !
Boy those gals keep you busy JU. That's good. Is that a plant, Chocolate mint? What do you do with it? Or I should say, what does she do withit? Sounds to me like they all appreciate what you are doing.
The beans sound good. I can't believe the ladies don't like them. I love them if they are cooked good. I like them in Bacon grease with a couple slices of bacon cut up in them. Good.
That's not good news about the Ice Plant Ju. I've got some nice little seedlings I was hoping would make it through the winter...crappola.
Mipii I had one this spring that almost made it back , it sprouted , then it got cold again , . then it died.
If it is a warmer winter for few , the might make it , their suppose to be hardy to zone 5 or colder .. Maybe a sandy or sunny rocky setting .
The last time this past winter that is where I had them , close ,,
A beautiful translucent bright bloom they have ,
good hopes to you !!!
I love them. When I have time and remember, I love to have a planter like the one you have there JU with Ice Plant in it, and put it in the middle of my round table on the deck. They are so bright and cheerful. They seed down in their pot real easy. Just shake their seed pods over it and more and more grow.
Never tried them in the house in the winter tho.
Are you sure , that is a 4 or 5 inch starter pot there Jen , Same ice plant ? I knew you grew some but thought they were different than these ,,.
The seeds came came from Mipii Thank you for them Robin ^_^
I have a few more I could start another for you , late for that here now , though ..
Not sure what you mean JU? How and why do you think yours are different than mine? Jen
Your very welcome Ju, thanks for the seeds you sent!
Jen, only that there is a bunch of types of ice plant .. I remember you growing some a time back
You have a real good memory JU. I haven't grown any in years. Like maybe 4 or 5 years. You remember them? I will hire you to fill out some of these medical forms I have to keep filling out. My mother was like that. When I went to work for the feds I had to fill out background investigation papers. And you had to cover every minute of your life. I was 32 at the time and my mom was in her late 60s. But, I called her and told her what I needed and asked her if she could help me with addresses clear back to the day I was born.
You know what she said? "Do you have a pencil?" And she proceeded to give me dates we moved from one place to the next, and the addresses of each. We moved around way back then because my dad had to find work. They had 5 of us kids. I'll bet those agents never in their careers got BI papers filled out that accurate. I'm sure they didn't even check.
Well, crap, the first football game of the Seahawks season, playing Denver, and they had to stop the game in the second quarter because of a lightning storm. Pre-season game. That's ok. The referees were really helping Denver. They needed it. But, they are trying all the new players out, so guess we don't want them hurt anyway.
Oh your poor little lemon. It looks good other than the color. I can make it green on my computer JU. Will that help? Sorry.
JU, that is a gorgeous Hibiscus. That little plant has 4 other BIG buds on it. Amazing.
But they are neat pictures.
Hey Jen, you get to be a bit of a smarty there lol
Maybe my poor little Lemon ? kind find my poor little mind and bring it back to me . ?
Lost that too some time ago ..
Well the Gaura pic is fuzzy , usual thing is, all I care about is that it grew, from seed .
Annuals are such a Ham ! A seasonal thing
Those pink zinnias are gorgeous. Beautiful pictures JU. Is that a Datura the Love Lies Bleeding isn't it? is draped over? My Dats are about to bloom. Each one has 4 or more buds. I have 2 in the same pot. A double Yellow, and a double Swirled Current I think it is.
I have an Ornamental grass, Can't remember what the name is, but it is red, green, and blue grass and just the last couple days it has gotten red feathers. Really pretty. It is a perennial, but I have it in an 8 inch pot so doubt if it will keep from freezing in there. I suppose I could take it out of the pot and plant it in the hosta bed for the winter. I have another one that is a perennial and it is a blue green. Has gotten pretty big too. Don't know if it does anything. Like dances or anything JU.
Did any of you take cuttings of the coleus, petunias etc? I just remembered that so I am going to have to get busy if I am going to do that. Also want to try cuttings of Scaveolas. I love those and you need a lot of them to show them real good. My Bacopas did good this year. I started them from seed and gosh, so surprised at how well they did. Better than any plants of them I have ever bought. Wonder why. The ones I purchased were always kind of woody. The ones I started from seeds aren't at all.
JU, I can see why that phlox is unhappy where it is placed.
Your flowers are beautiful. Are those first 2 pictures of Chicory the same plant? The second looks darker than the first, but could be the distance you took the picture.
Reason I asked about the cuttings was because we talked about it earlier when I googled it they Had good information. I tried a couple petunias, but had them in the house and they didn't get taken care of so they didn't make it. But, that's ok. I will work on those and others.
I just ordered some white zinnia seeds from Swallowtail. Think there were 25 or 30 in the pkg. I will split them with you for some pink ones. I ordered a few others can't remember now what they were, an orange cactus flower, a bronze or something I think, will let you know if you want any for maybe next year? You don't think they will sing and dance?
Next spring I will make a list of my seeds and see if any of the rest of you, you too JU, would like any. Evelyn might be ready for some for her new yard??? :0)
Jen
Love all those flowers JU. I can not get over how great your zinnias look and how healthy the leaves are. This year all of my leaves got torched. By bugs or sun.
I will save seeds from my white zinnia. It is short. It was seed I tossed from another zinnia that was not white. When I dead head zinnias, I just crumble the bloom and scatter the seeds. I usually have a better crop but we did a lot of mulching this year so they may have gotten covered up. So no telling what color zinnia the seed will produce.
I have my eye on a zinnia down the street I think is a big pom pom, and is very dark orange. I will take a photo. Waiting for bloom to fade. JU, can I cut a bloom before it is spent and set aside to dry. There is a flower way down in the bush that no one would miss. My helper brought it to my attention. And he wants some of the seed but does not dare go get it. They would have him arrested. They will just wave at me. Their children are always in my front garden picking flowers. But I have told them they are welcome to do so.
I have 4 plants that I started from seed of the Pink Mexican Bird of Paradise. I will take a photo and post. I get a germination for about every 5 seeds I plant. These will have to spend the winter in the garage. Once they germinate, they put out a very long root in about 5 days. Then I transplant them. First one I transplanted to soon and it died immediately. Second one I overlooked for a few days and that is when the long root formed. Lesson learned from trial and error.
That's the way it works Sharon. You ar elucky you had enough seed to do it right.
Wonder where JU is. Think he is still asleep? I worry about him, but sometimes I think he is just tired of listening to all of our aches and pains. I have so much going on my blood pressure was sky high. I could feel it. And then to top it off, Costco called and said my hearing aid was in and the only time Heather had was 4 o'clock this Sunday. I absolutely hate late appts in Spokane. But, Bob was over there yelling at me to take it. He is tired of having to repeat himself.
I cannot find my remote. Heather said she could program it to my new hearing aid but I will have to buy a new one since I can't find it. Darn it. And, I didn't have her put it on the original bill that I will turn in to the insurance company. That is the way my whole week is going. Jen
Crossposted Sharon.
I'm not JU, but yes, you can sure see the difference in that short time. Jen
Here - just trying to catch up.
Let's see. Do I have any propagation questions? Not right off. Will come up with something soon. ;)
A.
Sharon, just looked at that picture again. Are those suppose to be BOPs, or lemon trees? Don't know about Lemons but they don't look like BOPs.
Hi Amanda
jen
Jen, they are Mexican bird of paradise. Not the tropical one. But these are pink and it is a big zone push.
Amanda, great to see you.
I did dead head two spent blooms on the big red/orange zinnia down the street today.
Whohoo Sharon, you're so brave...lol!
Robin, not brave. Just gift of gab. If they caught me I would have told them I did not think they knew they should be deadheaded so I did it for them.
Lol, brave and smart!
Actually I am 72 and all my neighbors know me as Mother Winter. I am just that sweet little old lady that lives in the house with the English garden in the middle of the desert.
I have a Crossandra that I think I have removed seeds from. I will take a photo tomorrow so you guys can see what I have. I do know know if I have seeds or just a spent bloom. They are sold in the indoor plant area at HD and Lowes and love our heat and grow beautifully here.
I want to try and grow some over winter in my garage garden area. I tried last year but I left them in a sunny spot outside and they froze.
Sharon...
Will the crossandra propagate from cuttings?
Nancy
I can't remember, but seems to me I have seen the plants, but don't know about seeds in the tropical sites. Guess you could google them. If it would start from cuttings Nancy, don't know why it wouldn't.
LOL, Sharon, who do you think you are kidding? I doubt your neighbors view you that way at all. I am sure they admire your hard work.
Dumb as a fox.....Hehehheheh.....

Snapdragons-they overwinter here more often than not-this last winter was cold and they all died, but I have some yellow volunteers blooming now. I'm surprised they ever live through an IN winter!
