Hi guys
I have a Gloxinia that began dying on me (leafs soft, curling, withering) and I tried saving it with leaf cuttings. Three of them did not take, and the last seems to be doing well.
I left one leaf on the original plant because I thought it looked like it was still alive, even though the stem seemed to be dying. As you can see in the picture, the stem has in fact died and even dried out (red arrow). Yet the original leaf has grown and so has another. In addition, there is even a cluster of new leaf budding.
My question is:
1. Will this plant eventually die out?
2. If so, should I cut those leaves and try for leaf cuttings?
3. If I do that for the two, what about the remaining cluster of budding leaves?
4. Or should I cut above the dried part of the stem, and use the alive end for planting?
5. What IS keeping this plant alive? I cannot understand how it's getting any nutrient when the stem has dried out.
Thanks!
RM
Is my Gloxinia dead/ dying/ in-between?
It could be going dormant but it doesn't look good either way. Cut the green portion off and put it in a small vial of water to root it. Keep a baggie over it so the germs stay out of the water. You can also root it in some good potting mix but make sure the pot is very small - the present pot is too large for what I see left of the plant.
I am going to assume the soil is too wet and rotting the tuber, roots, and it has crept up to the stem. OR, it could be going dormant in which case stop watering the tuber/bulb and let it get some rest. It will come back out when it is rested and ready.
Hi hcmcdole
Thanks for your reply!
Yes that pot would be too big. Originally it has a few more plants but those died, so that's what's left. I suspect there are a couple of tubers buried there to be tendered for a bit before coaxing something out of them.
As for the rest of the plant, I've cut off as you advise. I planted them together with the other leaf cutting that's doing ok. hopefully all will survive!
