Spring Plant Swap 2014 in Lucketts, VA - Part 2

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm looking for starts of Summersweet and bottlebrush buckeye. If anybody grows them LMK.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Terp, I have a baby bottlebrush looking for home. Already giving large rooted branches to David and happy.
There's a lot of wild Summersweet Clethra in a park near here.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Jill and Roses - long as those babies come up - I am MORE than happy to bring y'all some. God knows I end up with plenty!! I'm positive I should be seeing some by that weekend even with our extra cold winter.

Jill - is your jasmine the one with the faint scent? I had a hardy one climbing up my tree for years...got so big I mistakenly chopped it at the ground thinking it was another trunk of my Dwarf Magnolia coming up. Sure you can imagine my 'happiness' when I realized what I'd done.

Muddy - only if you have some remaining...I'd like some of your Utah Sedum...believe me no worries if they're all spoken for.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Catbird and Chantell, I've got you both down for Sedum 'Utah'.

I thought I remember reading somebody had one. Awesome Sally. Want to go for a walk in the woods?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Does anyone have some extra Wild Ginger/Asarum canadense or Carex pensylvanica that they'd be willing to share?

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey guys, I got a little behind on my haves and wants list. Can those of you who are receiving things from me just check and make sure I've got your items listed? Thanks! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9757942 I thought I got caught up a few times but it looks like I hit the "preview" button instead of the "submit" button, and lost all my edits for a week or so. :/

Happy or SSG: I think it was one of you guys who got my Acanthus spinosus last fall. Did it return for you? If you need a new one, I have it for you. Otherwise, I will give it to Catmint.

Happy: Can I please have a bit of tiarella 'Eco Running Tapestry'? You said you are all out of Penstemon 'Dark Towers', right? I can give you half of my 'Frances Williams' hosta if you still need hostas for your Back 40 bed. I also have a Dark green (slightly blue), non-variegated but very big hosta that you can have too if you want.

Critter: I'm feeling really guilty about asking you for chicks while you are still trying to get them to fill in. I bought some at the store for really cheap so please cross me off for that. Thank you so much!

I think those people who are asking to be D-mailed with people's "wants" are smart.

So much can get lost in this chat thread.. I will also make that choice when
I have my list ready. Hang in!

G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

typwc, I'll pull a couple of the bigger chicks from any semp that looks like it's starting to increase well... I figure if you and SSG also have one to get going, that gives me a backup source if the squirrels play soccer with mine! Semp survival is very random for me.

Chantell, the scent on Stephan's Jasmine is not as strong as most, but it's still sweetly whiffy when covered in blooms... I've got your name on a start. I layered a few branches in fall, just bent them down & covered with a brick, so the starts are just a piece with a few rootlets - but once it starts getting roots it usually does OK.
i'd keep it in the pot until the rootball fills in.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter: Which of the jasmines are most fragrant?

typwc: Yes, you can have lots of tiarella 'Eco Running Tapestry' (it does run!). If I have extra Penstemon 'Dark Towers' I'll give you some -- I just peered at it this morning and it doesn't look as if it wants to divide. Please don't divide the Frances Williams just for me, but if you were otherwise doing to do that and don't have a home for it, I'd love it. Ditto for the dark green (slightly blue), non-variegated but very big hosta. I'm not sure about Acanthus spinosus, but if you have extras I'd love one.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Happy! I do want to divide my Frances Williams. She needs a little plastic surgery as she's getting a little wide around the middle. ;) I only have one Acanthus, I don't remember who I gave it to last fall. Must have been SSG. Catmint has already asked for it, though. If I can get 2 out of it, I'll split it for you guys.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

No no -- I'm good -- please just give the Acanthus to Catmint and ssg.

Yay on the Frances Williams -- I love that hosta. I'm trying slowly
to fill in our shady, dry "back 40" -- it'll be the project for the next few years. I'm trying to go mostly native, but have to make exceptions for some hostas. Thankfully it is fenced, so the deer can't nibble.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I just added Kalimeris pinnatifida to my "haves" list, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1535/ .

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Nope, not me either! I actually don't know what an Acanthus is. :)

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Happy, my hand is up asking for some of your Kalimeris Pinnatifida please.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

You've got it, Catbird.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

karen--

Sally came over and we divided my big Frances Williams not that long ago.

We got 5 divisions. I kept one--Sally got the rest.

May i suggest that, when you have dug the clump up (mine was in a lg. square pot)
You simply cut off the whole lower half of the roots. It will NOT harm the plants.

Then hose all the soil off the rest of the root ball and you will see what is what and where.

We ended up dividing it by slicing it into sections with a knife. You can, kind of, see
where the center of each division is. Take a deep breath--and slice away.

NO other way!

Mine is growing nicely......in the same old pot. Look!

Thanks, Gita. I'll do just that. :)

SSG, Acanthus is a very architectural plant. also known as 'Bear's Breeches'. It also happens to hate me. I gave it away last fall but left a piece apparently and so it's back. Catmint looks like it's all yours!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I just looked it up. I really like the leaf shape of the acanthus!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Terp, I'll see if I can bring branches of Clethra

Catmint I have Asarum canadense- will dig next week and see what I can share. It is spreading now.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, Sally!

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG, acanthus is also motif in classical architecture. For example: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lifes__too_short__to__drink__cheap__wine/246157550/

I just love the leaves and flowers and I'm terribly bitter about it not being happy in my yard and that's why I want it to just. go. away. It looks beautiful in the spring, and I get so hopeful that this is going to be "The Year"... but when the weather gets hot, it just... fizzles (leaves yellow and die). I can't make it happy so I hope someone else can.

If you love them, let them go, you know? :(

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

aww, Typ, I will be happy to give your acanthus a good home!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I have lots of self-seeded feverfew and yellow corydalis lutea if anyone wants some -- also some Canadian wild ginger. I need to add those to my "haves" list.

I'm getting excited!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'd like to get an Epimedium, preferably a native.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmm. A native epi?!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Paul---
Are you thinking of an Epi that is an Epiphylum? Not Epimedium.
Like the ones I have?
G.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

That was confusing. I was thinking of epimedium.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy, I'd love a little piece of the kalimeris -- such pretty daisy-like blooms! btw, the little epimedium you gave me is looking good! :-)

I've updated my "haves" but probably haven't noted all the requests there yet -- I'll go through this thread over the weekend and try to do that -- but I don't think I'm "out" of anything yet (& can grab another of most).

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Holly, I have a coworker who really, really wants a wisteria, can I get one from your beautiful plant?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Devon - We don't have any heavily scented jasmines that are hardy to our area…as far as I know. Your night blooming jasmine and most any of your sambacs are going to be the ones that have the heaviest scent. They also are very very easy to grow and do well when brought inside for the winter

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I managed to kill my Sambac this winter (it was indoors but I apparently wasn't kind enough). I'll have to look for a replacement.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally: I don't think any epimediums are native: "Native to woodlands and shady, rocky places from the eastern Mediterranean to eastern Asia, Epimedium species have recently been introduced in large numbers to the West, thanks to the work of intrepid explorers like Probst, Dan Hinkley, and their helpful guides." http://www.bbg.org/gardening/article/elegant_epimedium Vancouveria looks somewhat similar and is native.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sure can Catbird.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

thanks Happy- then I will put them on the back burner. Cancel that all-call for epimedium.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

SallyG -- are you going all native?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Well, let's just say I'm leaning that way. Or trying to balance. Or something. I'm bummed that bleeding hearts I have self seeding like crazy are not native- that's made me feel sort of sad. I'm not going to rip them out- but as far as adding, well, I guess David is getting to me! In a good way!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

A local garden club (the Silver Spring club) has these left over from a plant sale. They are selling these for $1 each to clear them out. If you want any (to be delivered at my house or the swap), dmail me and I'll pick them up for you (assuming they are still left when I go on Friday afternoon). (A "+" sign means there are at least 15 left currently.)

Peppers (all are ornamental and hot):
'Orange Thai' +
'Joe's Round' +
'Hot Lemon' +

Herbs
Parsley +
Bronze Fennel +
Catnip +
Oregano 'Hot and Spicy' +
Swiss Chard
Chives
Chamomile

Perennials and misc.
groundcover sedums +
Caladium bulbs 'Fancy Leaf' mix
Yellow mums
Daylily 'Summer Wine'
Rose of Sharon
Carolina Jasmine vine

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm trying to do the same thing -- hardly 100%, but I have to really love a non-native to get it. And the speed of my conversion is really escalating. Sort of the same way I'm moving away from eating meat. http://www.forbes.com/sites/michellemaisto/2012/04/28/eating-less-meat-is-worlds-best-chance-for-timely-climate-change-say-experts/ Still do love a good rib-eye.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ooh! A 'Hot Lemon' pepper plant and a Bronze Fennel for me, please!

If you still have your "dead" sambac, water it and put it outside... mine has come back any number of times when i was sure it had given up the ghost!

I think 'Maid of Orleans' is the especially yummy variety... and I believe our JB often has really nice starts of it for sale.
