Spring Plant Swap 2014 in Lucketts, VA - Part 2

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Muddy! You don't think it's ostrich fern, do you? I don't know what that one looks like when it's thriving... in my yard, it struggles. LOL

I'm hardening off tomatoes, should have a few extras unless the groundhog reappears and eats the first set. Balck, yellow, red, pink... if you have preferences, LMK. I'm pretty certain I'll have some Potato Top plants at least.

Potting up extra bits as I go... thyme, oregano, mint. The photo of Happy reminded me... so I potted up a nice clump of greek oregano for the prize table. Does anybody want 'Hot & Spicy' greek oregano? I have less of it but can layer a couple of pieces if wanted, should root by the swap.

Most of my cuttings are still green... but the Japanese Snowbell trimmings just look like dead sticks... *pout*

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, yes to greek oregano! The one I got from your last year didn't overwinter for me.

I have some variegated carex grasses that i was going to use as border plants but I've changed my mind. Anyone interested? One is Silver Septre, and the others are similar to Evergold.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SSG, you good with regular (still strong & peppery) or want hot & spicy? or both if poss?

Silver Septre would be great! Glad to reimburse you for them.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Ssg. I'd be interested in your carex.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I'm getting regular oregano from Terp, so I'd love hot and spicy!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

OK, SSG! I saw one little start I can get for sure, will try to layer others

Pleased to say my variegated Vinca is gone! Martina & the kids dug it up for her place -- even dug a few well rooted weeds while they were at it! :-) But no fear, if anybody really wanted some I'm sure there will be bits re-sprouting adn growing nicely by fall swap LOL.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Terp, got you down.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, that sounds like my lily of valley!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

SSG please and thankyou to both of your carex.

Roses I have a Bloodroot for you and Catmint.

Terp am working on an assortment of Monarch friendly plants for the memorial garden at UMD. So cool you are doing this.

ChantelI have Tuberoses for you and probably some Milkweed.

I may have some Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' Local Garden Center has 4packs of perennials for $4 so picked up those, Rudbeckia 'Autumn Sun', fennel. Great Blue Lobelia, and I can't remember all else they had...Good sized plants. This is only place I see perennials in 4 packs.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Ok, coleup.

That's it for the carex!

It's going to be good to see you again, Chantell! It feels like it's been years!

That Queen Victoria is just gorgeous. I'd buy a 4 pack of Penstemon Dark Towers if anyone carried it. What a steal at $4! I absolutely love light pink flowers on dark foliage. I hope the foliage on my Weigela turns dark again!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Paul--

Would you be interested in a scattering of Rose Campions, here and there,
in this Memorial Garden? They are so pretty!

I have a slew of them coming up from seed in the bed by my A/C.
Still small--I could just scoop them out and put them in a pot.

Thanks SSG
I know they had P'Husker Red' which has white flowers and Monarda "Red Shades' will inquire about 'Dark Towers'. Someone was looking for Rue and they have taht as 4 pack, too

Just put all my EE s outside and hope some water and warm temps will mean I have some to share again. Twypc not sure on 'Mohito'.

Muddy? I think Critter may be right on that fern being Ostrich as it looks like my stand and dissimilar to Autumn.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Sure gita. THX.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Coleup if you can't get Mohito to wake up, I'll take some of the 'Queen Victoria' as trade instead if you're offering it. It wasn't really clear from your wording.

SSG, if you really want Dark Towers, I think they have it at The Perennial Farm (they did last year, anyhow). Perennial Farm is sort of expensive and only open on Saturdays. I'm still thinking about planning a MAG field trip. Maybe mid-summer. Anyway, if you really want it and want me to go check it out for you sometime, I am looking for an excuse to go back there. Not this weekend but maybe next weekend I could do it.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Typ, I was going to wait for a summer or end-of-season sale for Dark Towers, either at Santa Rosa or Behnkes. It's $7 at Santa Rosa right now, but they're small and won't bloom for another year. I'll certainly take 4 for $4!

If you happen to go Perennial Farm, it'd be great if you could check on the price, but no need to make a special trip. :)

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

OK sounds good!

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Coleup, I would love to have a 4 pack of the Lobelia 'Queen Victoria' for cost. What 'local garden center' are you finding them at? I would like to make a visit to it.

I believe you also have my Sundrops and I need to pay you for them. Also need to figure out where to put them.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I have plenty of Variegated Vinca, If you don't want to plant it in your gardens you can take it home and put it in your window boxes and pots then throw it out come fall.

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Holly, I will take some of the variegated Vinca for my pots please.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd love to split a 4-pack of the Queen Victoria with someone if anyone is interested. What a terrific price!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Catbird, I'm going to the Paca Gardens sale on Sat or Sun, maybe we (And others, too) could meet up there and then I could take you on a tour of my semi secret plant haunts! Windwood Gardens has the 4 pkgs (old Solomons Is. Rd ) They have a melon called 'Anne Arundel' that has been kept goung since the 17 hundreds!

Karen I'd love to share a Queen Victoria with you. I got them as possible planting or container mates for the Asclepias 'Ice Ballet' Would love to have some 'Snow Flurry' asters to 'spill' How's that for an upscale container of weeds!

Catmint, I've already set aside two QV for you as they are good Hummingbird and Butterfly plants and you have so generously shared your plants for the Monarch Waystation projects! They do like it moist/wet so are good for rain gardens. too.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Bahaha yes, that'll definitely make for an interesting container.
Thank you for the QV!
FYI: the two 'Ice Ballet's that I have earmarked for you are awake, about 3 inches tall each. :) I think they woke up rather early as far as Asclepias goes. If I find any regular pink swamp milkweed volunteers around my yard, I'll save them for you too.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

SSG: I have several Dark Towers plants, and I think they've grown enough this season that I can give you a piece. I am already dividing it to give a piece to Donner.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Coleup!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Great Karen! 2nd year A incarnata will most likely bloom this year whereas 'plugs' I got from North Creek probably won't. So more mature plants really help.

I'm hoping that you and all 'swappers' will try the Tropical Milkweed (Didn't you say you love tropical?!!!) as an annual even if not interested in growing our native to this area Milkweeds. They work well in containers and planted out. I ordered lots just to have at least one plant to share with you all...my gift!

Milkwed flowers are quite beautiful!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, happy!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Glad to Catbird

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

If anyone is interested in a purchase of Agastache Purple Haze (about $5 a plant) or Muhlenbergia Capillaris (about $3 a plant) from Santa Rose, to be distributed at the swap later this month, please dmail me for details.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Critter and Greenthumb, I've decided that my ferns are indeed Ostrich Ferns, although they do not produce brown fronds for some reason...unless theirs are so unremarkable that I just don't notice them.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

My Ostrich ferns have been doing well in the dry shady area we unaffectionately call our "back 40."

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the Bloodroot, Judy!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, maybe I should give the ostrich fern a try in the fence row, despite my excluding it from my want list in the fern buy -- I definitely have some dry part to full shade back there! Muddy, I'd still like a clump of it please. If you don't want to bother potting, you can probably just dig it teh day before the swap and tie the roots up in a grocery bag to keep them moist.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

My pleasure Roses!

Muddy, only about half of my Ostrich ferns send up fertile fronds from year to year and only after a certain maturity/age is reached. If you saw one you would know they are not little or insignificant

Thumbnail by coleup
Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for all the info on Ostrich ferns everyone! I think they're beautiful and they look nice around my pond, so I can live without fertile fronds.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Coleup, was the rue they had Ruta graveolens or thalictrum? I would be interested in Thalictrum.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have Onoclea , Sensitive fern aka Bead Fern, a rhizome kind of fern- plenty

Catbird, and Holly, I also have Variegated vinca to re-home, that would save Holly some space packing, and Catbird, some carrying, can just take it home from here.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sounds good Sally, I will take it off my list and let you bring it.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Catmint, the 4 packs are Ruta graveoleans

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Good idea Sally. Are we all riding together again?

My catnip seems to have gone crazy if anyone would like some. No idea what variety it is but when it is dried my cats prefer it to the catnip from Kong. They even eye the bag hanging from the ceiling to see if they can knock it down.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Catbird: I'd love some of your intoxicating catnip to grow for my pal Barney.
