Yay, thank you Sally!
Spring Plant Swap 2014 in Lucketts, VA - Part 2
Do you (Sally) or anybody else have an extra cherry tomato plant for Joyanna?
I have five total varying size-
Critter, the Cypress vine that I'm used to growing has very feathery ferny leaves. The plants that I have now have solid kind of heart shaped leaves.
Does any one want common milkweed? I have about 5 extra pots of it, but I won't bring them if there aren't any takers because my car is going to be pretty full.....they'll get planted in the forest instead.
Roses---
I have Cardinal Climber seeds...I can bring you a packet--self-collected....
.I try to grow it every year,,,but seldom have any big success-only the 1st year
I grew it--it was so pretty.
I have 3 seedlings starting to twine around my wrought iron trellis.
SS--I have a tomato volunteer growing in my tomato bed.
It HAS TO BE a Cherry tomato! They are the ones that drop like marbles to the ground--
and the come up next year.
There are more coming up--I am pulling them up as weeds...
Roses---Here is what a Cardinal Climber leaves and bloom look like....
Gita
I pulled up and filled two bags with Chelone Hot Lips stalks. I also pulled up some pink phystotegia. I have two pots of that as well. Please d-mail me if you have any interest.
Jessica
OMG, yes indeed, I'd love the Hot Lips! And I'd also love to try the pink physotegia. I must have the 11:30pm plant munchies.
Happy,
I will add your name to those two items!!
Jessica
MuddyI could really use your Common Milkweed as none of mine are ready for prime time, Also, SOS and Crickethicket and UMDTerp have requested same from me but I have none for them, Could you reserve a pot for each of them? Thanks ever so much!
Did you want a Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' and/or Solidago caesia (part shade) ?
If you still have Wild Ageratum I could use some of that, too.
Judy
Coleup: I have miles of perennial ageratum if you would like it -- but I caution that it is very very very seedy.... so I recommend against it!
Ric I found a Holy Moly pepper for you!
Happy, The Ageratum is for a newly disturbed wild area where I'd like to get some desireable weedy reseeders established before less desireables move in! I saw that you are getting rid of yours so maybe I can make a salvage trip to you or meet at an Ace Outback sale!
What are you replacing it with?
Gardadore, I'd love some chelone Hot Lips! I had a few last year but I think they've all been eaten up by the beebalm.
Happy, I've been trying to grow the hardy ageratum/blue mistflower from seed with dismal results (I'm sure I'm doing something wrong with it). If I could get a few starter sprigs from you that would be wonderful!
Gita, those are the plants that I grow every year as the Cypress Vine. My Cardinal Climbers have different flowers and different leaves. I LOVE the ones in your picture and that's what I thought would come from the seeds that I had. Thanks for bringing the seeds that I really wanted!!
Happy, do you still have some of the penstemon 'husker's red'? If so, could I have some?
I am happy to bring you both (Coleup and Catmint and anyone else) lots of Conoclinium coelestinum, but please don't yell at me when you have a million seedlings. It is beautiful in the last summer (my husband adores it) but it is very ill-behaved. It is a native, but it has worn out its welcome for me....
Chelone, does it need a really moist place?
Mine seems to like moist soil and part sun, with heavy emphasis on the 'part' --almost part shade as opposed to part sun. ;-)
LOL Happy, I'll just refer to Sallyg's article yesterday on "Thugs" that aren't weeds or invasives but can be the right plant for the right place! No yelling allowed.
Would it be easier to come and get from you at a later time post swap? Or maybe Catmint could collect from you since she is close and I'll just get from her. I know you have lots on your plate!
I'll dig some up for both of you. If that isn't enough, Catmint and/or you can come collect more. Though I will be murdering all I can find as they get larger....
would Chelone Hot Lips be Checkerspot food? How picky would they be?
Sally, I've read mixed things abut whether C. lyonii is a larval host for the baltimore checkerspot. Some websites are adamant that only C. glabra can serve as host, but in the Lepidopteran hostplant database, C. lyonii is listed as a host for the Baltimore checkerspot.

Thanks Catmint, I guess the least I can do is grow some Hot Lips and try?
Gardadore- I'll take some Chelone Hot Lips please if you have enough
that's my attitude, too, Sally! :-)
BTW, I don't know how thuggish the Conoclinium coelestinum (hardy ageratum) would be in the wild. They certainly cross the line in a garden bed. If one were good about deadheading every single blossom before they go to seed, maybe they could be kept in check. I think I said before (but maybe I didn't) that I have a neighbor who has a separate large bed next to her patio that is full of them, and they look splendid there, but the seeds have nowhere to plant themselves because they fall into the driveway.
Just came in for a short break, Having a great time out there digging plants. LOL
Just want to say that I'm stopping any new swapping at this point. I have some other things to attend to before I leave a 5;30 to pick up Gardadore tomorrow morning.
...yeah like SLEEP?? wow!

Here is the link from PF on "Cypres Vine" .

The main difference i see is the leaves and the shape of the bloom.
Here is a link to an amazing picture of the Cardinal Climber: Hope it comes through--
I hate these huge, long links...where at the end all you get is the word--"Hyperlink"....

RRR, Really, you can't just dig up a few more plants tomorrow morning before you leave for the swap at 5:30........ LOL You are such a wonder to me such energy you have. Safe trip can't wait to see you tomorrow.
Coleup, I'll bring the milkweed; I'm glad you and others can use it !
If you and Happy don't mind, though, I'll let you get your wild ageratum from her because my plants weren't very thuggish last year. Besides, I don't want to deny Happy the pleasure of finding happy homes for her little thugs : )

And Muddy I'm about ready to dig up some spiderwort thugs for you!! :-D
Muddy1: I'm not at all happy about giving the ageratum to Coleup, because she'll give them a soft luscious bed to lie in. I'd rather give the ageratum plants to someone who would torture them and laugh at their demise. But so be it! They are coming out of my yard regardless!
LOL,
I am packing the Climbing Hydrangea, No one mentioned wanting them but they are coming along anyway.
Can't wait to see you all either, Holly.
Gita, the two vines look the same to me.
And Muddy I'm about ready to dig up some spiderwort thugs for you!! :-D
no ME ME... really, I will bring a couple...I hadn't seen that Muddy wants them. Just came back from a walk in the woods where spiderwort grows nicely in a lot of shade.. Grows more spread out, not a thick clump like I have with sun.
Sounds like Muddy will have lots of spiderwort to rehome--LOL!
If there's more than enough to go around, I might take one :)
