Spring Plant Swap 2014 in Lucketts, VA - Part 2

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

At the risk of going off-topic, here's the reason we had an extended visit with my parents in Pittsburgh: Empress Josephine, aka "Josie," Golden Retriever, now 9 weeks old. Mom says they might loan her out to me from time to time, but she's not available for swapping.

Sweet!!! I bet she'll be treated like a little empress.

As I mentioned on the plant addicts' thread (love that name!), I just planted an Aronia melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry) and a Cornus amomum (Silky Dogwood). These new shrubs are wonderfully full compared to the leggy ones I already owned, which made me realize I probably should prune the leggy ones, so.....if it's possible to propagate by cuttings, is anyone interested?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

It looks like I'll have some wintersown survivors for the swap. 2 more Blushing Susie and 3 Snapdragon (either SNAPDRAGON NIGHT AND DAY or SNAPDRAGON TWINNY BRONZE SHADE). The lettering totally wore off the sides and bottoms out there. I took them in weeks ago as soon as I saw some life. A few Magic Fountain Delphiniums are making it also.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses---could I have one of your "Blushing Suzy" starts?

I want to give it to my daughter.....she has, kind of, clay soil...but
everything grows once it settles in.

Thanks, Gita

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Sure thing, Gita.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses, I'd love a blushing suzie vine!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Just potted up:
Spiderwort, medium purple, medium height, maybe the native one
Spiderwort, darker purple, slightly shprter,
Antennaria, pussytoes- 2 in 2-inch pots
Calathea rattlesnake plant- It's not happy with me, I'm ready to see if it likes someone else better. Not sure if it needs to be really ripped apart and let regrow/rejuvenate? It's still getting brown patches, which I suppose might just man uneven watering/ getting dried in part of the roots. I found a little tuber when I unpotted it, so I'll have the fun of seeing it from babyhood, maybe,.

I'm excited that the Hydrangea for ecnalg will be blooming for swap!

Happy do you want irises now just as they are finishing bloom, or want to wait. I'm sure they will do fine either way, but would probably trim the leaves if I dig them now, and not sure you want to deal with them that way. Maybe temporarily plant them in somewhere until late summer, then put them on the hill?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd love them whenever you feel like dividing them (and only if you do). I'm completely happy with trimmed leaves. I'll stick them in the hill right away - it isn't offended by trimmed leaves either!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

happy- OK!
Hey Jill= what is that vine thing with the big roots that you left at my yard last year, in a large black nursery pot? Got pinnate compound leaves, pointed oval toothed leaflets,. Not autumn clematis, I don't think it's Wisteria but not that familiar.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Gotcha for the Blushing Susie, SS.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Terp- the owner at the co op said he doesn't think he'll get his sweet potato starts by next weekend. Due to the cold spring.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! I already posted this on another Thread---

Checked today at HD.

Bonnies Veggies has Sweet Potato "Beauregard" available
in a 9-pack market pack. $3.48.

Just FYI. G.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Gotcha sally! Oh well.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I just dug up a clump of these heirloom primroses from my YUK bed.
Divided it in 5 sections and potted them up. Available...LMK
I have had these forever--in different beds...

I was always stepping on this clump to empty and re-fill my bird bath--
so I thought I might as well dig it up and put down a stepping stone to step on.

Picture is NOT mine...Googled it. Put it on the previous Thread.
I am sure this one will close any minute....

here is the Heirloom primrose

Can somebody please tell me what ate my parsley? A groundhog or a rabbit? It had to be a good sized animal to eaten leaves on all 12 plants overnight! The plants are still alive, and will recover soon, but they look pretty bare at the moment :o(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

just the leaves? hmm... is it too early for black swallowtail caterpillars, or maybe not?

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Part of the stalks was also eaten. Don't think it was caterpillars :o(

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Not caterpillars, I'm sure of that. Oh how frustrating.
My parsley is in a pot this year. Voles have not figured out how to climb steps to the deck.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I have something nibbling on my hostas and lily of the valley in the back bed. They actually look chewed on.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: I would LOVE one of your heirloom primroses. I'm so excited to hear they are long-lived. I thought they were supposed to be very short-lived.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita I would love one of your heirloom primroses. Thanks so much!

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, I would also love to have one of your heirloom prims! Thanks :)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jeff--Got you down! One left!

May I suggest you leave them to root out in the pots I will have them in. Tall skinny PW pots.
and then plant them in your location of choice in the fall. OK?

The roots got a bit butchered--but they did not, really, wilt for me...Let them re-grow a bit.

Here is one of my other clumps that is surviving in a horrendous location.
Under a Nandina , infested with Maple roots and Spearmint. NO sweat!
A real trooper!

OK Gita. I'll eat up the last h-primrose.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK, Paul/Pal....got you down....

IF I have to dig up another clump and divide it--I can do that....maybe.......?

I have 2 old clumps left.growing away in the crappiest conditions/locations.
Just saying......................

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I am bowled over and so excited about the primrose. You made my day!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita I'm sorry I couldn't tell whether you were counting me in among those receiving some of the primrose or not? I'm confused.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Cat----Don't be confused! You were the 1st to ask. You are "in".....

That is why I chose to have requests by D-mail---these chat Threads can get
immensely long-winded...and confusing. I can only read so much in the time I have...
and answering takes a long time--as I am NOT a fast typer....
One finger on my left hand--and 3 on the right. AND--I have to look down to see
what i am typing...UGH!

BUT--since I posted here some of my "haves"--it assumed a life of its own...

NO biggie--I sit here at DG umpteen times a day. So--I usually keep track,
one way or another...

I "may" consider digging and dividing another one of my root-choked clumps of it.
I want to plant some somewhere else where they can breathe!
I cannot imagine how well they would do in some rich, humusy soil???
I also have NO idea when, or from where, I originally got these.....

SO--if any of you are craving for one--there may be a chance I will have some more.

NOT promising! As of now--all 5 of my divisions are spoken for. GONE!

G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Okay thanks Gita! :-)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Is there any interest in the pink-blooming Evening Promrose???

My daughter, Aina, has it spreading a bit too much in her front
flower bed. She, or I--can dig some up and pot it. They are known to be
invasive--to a degree--but so pretty when they bloom.

Please LMK here, or by D-mail....so I know what to do. Gita

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

I would love to have some of the evening primrose, GIta.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I would too, Gita. I can put it on my awful front hill, where it is a good thing when plants spread! But only if it isn't a hassle....

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hassles can all be overcome!

Got you both down for some Evening primrose.
The blooms are beautiful...they are blooming right now...

I remember where and when I first saw evening primrose -- 16th street NW DC, 23 years ago. My jaw dropped. It is a shame it is so invasive.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

If you have enough, I would like some of the Pink Evening Primrose, also, Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, I would also take some Pink Evening Primrose if you have enough.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Greenthumb & Muddy sorry to say that the Pickerel Weed did not make it thru the winter this year.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Pro Mix pick-up is closing tomorrow. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1347698/

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses and Holly--put you down for some Evening primrose.

My daughter has these growing--mot me. She will dig up as many as she can--
take them to work--and I will pick the pots up from her at IKEA.

I am sure I will have enough for all of you. I didn't expect such a great interest in these...

Gita

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks Gita (and thanks to your daughter)!

Holly, thanks for letting us know. It's too bad we had such a rough winter; I sure hope that's the last one for a while.
