Mine are semi-dead....growing new leaves from scratch.
I think they are in too big pots....too cold?? (by my LR window).
Oh, well--it was an "experiment".......G.

LOL Sally, Some how I missed that pic. It is a HOOT!
Va_Wild_Rose, Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful
Here are a few pic's of the Voodoo Lily, It sure is taking off and great fun to watch. Ric swears that you can see it growing. At this rate I may have a very stinky house plant.
The last pic is when I got it about 5 weeks ago it was 2-3 inches tall. Now it is 22 inches tall in the first pic you can see how the leaves are starting to unfurl.
Holly--
What will the ultimate height of this Lily be??
What an extraordinary plant! Are you going to move it outside when it blooms, Holly? It probably will stink up the whole house ;o).
I am not sure Gita, I will have to contact the HGHA Member that brought it to the Raffle table to ask a few ???
Donner, I am hoping that it will take long enough to bloom that we at least have a day that is warm enough to move it to the GH if necessary. You are right it would stink up the house if left inside.
I just googled Voodoo Lily---lots od links and YouTubes with time-lapse photos...
It says the bulb grows very fast--up to 6' in two weeks....
http://www.wemoss.org/topicks/feb07_plants/voodoo_lily.pdf
How tall is your ceiling???? G.
Ceiling inside is 7 to12ft it gets higher as you get farther away from the window In the GH it is about 10ft.
Wow! That's some growin'!
Holly--
How will you put up with the stink???
Hopefully it will be warm enough to move to the GH if not I will put it in one of the upstairs bedrooms with the door closed and hope the fumes don't make it downstairs. Maybe crack one of the windows in the upstairs room. If only I can get one 40* sunny afternoon to move it.
The second half of next week will be very warm. That will be a good time to move it. What an interesting plant! Would love to see photos of its flowers.
Oh I will have lots of pictures as it develops.
Why is it called Voodoo Lily?
Sally, the succulent I got from you is blooming!
Wow, ssg, fantastic! I don't remember ever getting mine to bloom. Thanks for posting pics! Mine has been hanging out in a cool spot and on the dry side. I didn't expect it to do much till spring.
Is that a Kalanchole? They can put up some big stems so much fun to watch.
It's pig's ear, which I think is Cotyledon orbiculata, but I can't tell which cultivar I have. Some cultivars have a totally different leaf shape.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/165484/
Best of my knowledge it is that Kalanchoe, maybe not that cultivar. I got it from Chantell more than five years ago.
Sorry for the common name confusion but note the scalloped leaf edge on the Kalanchoe and not on Cotyledon.

Oh so that's why I couldn't find a matching picture online! Thanks, Sally!
You're so welcome, again, sorry about that confusing name!
This Begonia
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/71382/
has been around our group for a few years- right now I have a small pot of cuttings that are taking off with new growth, and an older pot is so happy the leaves are getting 9 inches long. Very happy with it. I have newer cuttings in a plastic bagged pot too.
Strelitzia- from coleup two years ago. This thing never quits. For two winters it has come in and sat in the basement with just some morning sun. It grows new leaves in dead of winter with barely any water. I just moved it to a lighter warmer spot for spring. Maybe this year I can get flowers. Sounds like it wants plenty of food and water to bloom- that sounds familiar! A smaller scale species or cultivar of this would be a great potted plant.

My White Bird of Paradise is huge haven't seen it bloom yet either. A small version would be nice, too. LOL
Took a few pic's in the GH yesterday. Not sure what Begonia this is but it sure is pretty with the ruffled edge leaf and the small dainty blooms. Oxalis is blooming and looking pretty good, too.
The Bougie and Schefflera are putting out new leaves, the first since the incident with the GH heater. Talking about the GH heater the Gas Co. still hasn't filled our tank. We are running on reserve with electric heaters plugged in carrying some of the heating load hopefully they can handled it when the gas runs out. I know they are having trouble meeting demand, they asked if it was a commerical GH and I told them no it was just a small private GH but there were expensive Orchids and large tropical plants in it and they didn't need to fill the tank just bring us some gas before we run out. I am calling again this morning and asking point blank "Are we getting any gas from you"
wow, those voodoo lilies are something how fast they grow!!
My Double Dream amaryllis bulb is finally growing with a healthy looking bud on it! Still *nothing* from the Misty bulb--not even roots.
The Flamenco has grown like crazy and bloomed and bloomed since November but seems finally headed to dormancy. I liked it okay but would like to try something different for next year.
Anyone want a Flamenco amaryllis bulb that has bloomed like crazy this season, but I'm ready to move on and try something different next year? Or a Misty bulb to try to coax out of dormancy?
gosh Holly, good luck! I guess the weather has put a big backlog on deliveries.
Catmint, the Flamenco isn't going to go dormant now, but might look pretty rough. You could keep it alive till warm weather then put it outside. If you truly don't want to mess with it, I'll add it to my small group of Ams that I will be growing outside somewhere over summer.
And Misty, if she's still solid and not visibly sick, she too can go outside later. If there's no roots started at all, I think I'd stop watering for now. Better keep it dry to avoid rot, and if it wants to bloom it will begin without added water.
I've been successful at over wintering angel wings for a while now. They were almost dormant for a bit but are starting to grow now that the days are becoming longer. I hope to start cuttings in a week or so. They do keep well if left a little dryer when not showing new growth. I had 3-4 different sizes and colors. Many of the Rexs I wanted to show this year are making a comeback after the GH shock.
For those of you that grow streps, and even if you are just interested in them...
We have a new Streptocarpus group on Cubits now.
You can find it here...
http://cubits.org/Strepbystrep/
Called StrepbyStrep.
You will find a lot of info and photos over there, so check it out!
Karen
Thanks for the info Karen.
The Voodoo lily is dead........... Well not quite dead it has been decapitated.
I was moving it out of the living room this afternoon and it fell out of the pot and the top part of the bloom is completely broken off.
I have it upstairs where I will keep it growing and see what it puts out in the way of leaves maybe it will give me a few more bulbs to play with.
Here are the last pics of it.
Oh Holly! That is too bad! I am so sorry that happened.
I hope it does actually live after this so you can keep it going.
I am not at all familiar with this plant, but I have been following your posts about it.
oh, too bad!
Oh Holly, I'm so sorry to hear that! Well, maybe it won't mind the 'haircut' after all and will keep on thriving for you! =)
Holly, so sorry to hear about the mishap with the voodoo lily! Hopefully the bulb will put out another bloom?
Thanks, Sally. Can the amaryllis bulbs go in the ground or do they need to stay in a pot?
So sorry to hear about the voodoo lily :o(. So it got top heavy. Maybe you can use something to weigh the bulb down next time. Polished river stones or glass marbles?
Talk about losing tops---ALL my Coleus lost their tops yesterday.
I finally cut them all back ans am hoping all the tops will root,,,again.
Trimmed back the tall stems--and now the bottoms will (hopefully) re-grow.
Some of the top parts were not all that strong as when taking cuttings from the garden,
This means that my Coleus supply may be tripled....IF they all make it..
I lost a bunch of plants from the fall trimming that never made it....
Like--from a tray-full of Osteospermum daisies--I only have one survivor.
Some pictures of other houseplants in the process of surviving til spring...
1--Waiting for my cut back brugs to start leafing out again. I see nubbies....
Will spray as soon as leaves emerge...have to head off whatever was the problem early.
2--The Braz. Plume cuttings are almost full-size plants by now
3--Trying to keep my ONLY Maya cutting from dying. Have it under a plastic bag...
4--I totally chopped back my big Angel Wing Begonia a while ago.
The cuttings are in water rooting--and the Mama is already growing back.
Kind of too soon--as I usually do this in spring. I uproot it, put new spoil in the pot,
and then leave it outside... Oh, well...
5--My poor little Rex Begonias are giving up the ghost...They lasted 2 years....
Donner--
Overall--my AV's are doing great--just no signs of blooming yet on any of them.
I am sooooo impatient to see this happen...
Some of the variegated ones are showing strong growth--especially
in the crowns where it is most colorful. Is this a good thing?
From all 65 of them--I have only tossed 2 or 3 small ones...
1--Here is a big part of the table
2--3--4- The variegated ones with nice coloration.
Your opinion, please... Gita
Catmint they can go in the ground. Transition to bright light and feed and water well. I saw a whole share of a community garden here planted in dozens of Amaryllis in full sun.
Gita, I had trouble with Rex begonias too.
thanks, Sally. Just need the warmer weather to arrive... LOL!
Sally--
I have read that rexes are hard to maintain as house plants in the house--
now--ric has his in his GH--and they are doing better...
Is it all about humidity? What do you think? Mine did really good until this winter....
G.
Gita, your AVs look pretty healthy.
Not sure how old the AVs are, but they still look too small to bloom. Judging from their sizes, I would say that the single ones in pics #2, #3, and #4 should bloom around April/May. Make sure their potting soil is fresh and they get good light. Feed them "weekly but weakly".
I did a bad job providing light to mine this winter. The plant shelves with lighting were demolished when the apartment management came to steam clean the carpet, and were never reassembled. My AVs and streps didn't bloom much, but are starting to set buds now.
The pic below is the 'Frosty Cherry' that's currently blooming. Although the mobile phone photo is out of focus, hope you can still tell that it is a very pretty plant. I am baby-sitting this AV for Jill. Will take a leaf for propagation before giving the plant back to Jill :o).
