Spring Plant Swap 2014 in Lucketts, VA

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

If I pay for Tammy to become a subscriber--it will be for a whole year.
Spending $20 will not change my life...would love to help her out...
That is how Karen (Typ) became a member..but she already was and unpaid member
and had a DG name. ....:o)

I still don't know how I could do this if she is not yet in DG--and has a user name??
I'd love to surprise her-- Need a bit of HELP on this.....

What is the PAID called--"subscriber"????
And the NOT PAID--just lurking is called what?????

G.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita: Just send a dmail to admin -- there is a "contact us" link at the bottom of each page.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm pretty sure she needs a username before she can subscribe; I don't think admin has come up with a way yet to "surprise" somebody with a membership. For one thing, all members (paid members are called subscribers) need to give admin an email address, and having somebody else supply that gets into privacy issues, since DG has always been really good about protecting email lists etc.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I just received a reply from Admin. (Terry) on this.

It seems pretty complicated w/o Tammy having a user name.
I think I will ask her to choose one--and then proceed.
OR--she may have found $20 to do it herself....

G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Pat (ecnalg) joined DG without subscribing. Since she had a user name and I knew her e-mail address I was able to surprise her with a subscription, no problem.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

David--or Pat---

How can one establish a user name if one has never posted on DG?

Or--Can one Post on ANY Thread with a user name--thus establishing herself
as "on DG".
What Forum.Thread/Post can a non-subscriber post on--and will it be an issue?

I know--questions...questions.....G.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita -
If you go to Communities and then Forums (possibly discussion forums) and scroll down to the bottom, it tells you which ones you can look at and post without becoming a paying member.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Pat--I just did--and this is how it tells you which you can post on
w/o being a subscriber.....

* Forums marked with an asterisk are only available to subscribing members.

OK! So, Tammy can post on any Forum w.o an asterisk and establish her "presence" on DG.

Will talk to her later this week.....Thanks for your help. G.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

right... but she'll still have to register as a "member" and have a username before she can post... or before she can become a paid subscriber. it sounds more complicated than it actually is, LOL. You've just been a member so long you forgot how you got started! :-)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita, while I can no longer access the non-member home page because the site recognizes my computer and signs me in, I remember that a newbie or non-member will be be given the option to join by simply providing their e-mail address and choosing a username not already in use. That done, they can be upgraded to a subscriber at any time by anyone with $20.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, Jill--I am going on 12 years...

Thanks, David---

That's kind of what I figured out....
I already showed Tammy how to get on DG at work and a bit about navigating it.
I will be back at work on Tues. and wed.
If Tammy is there--I will navigate with her to one of the non-asterisked Forums
and she can create a user name and password and post somewhere a few times.
Then she can just join. It will work out...

I tried it pretending to not be signed in.
SO--As soon as you go to the DG Home Page--up at the very top it says "Sign up".
That will take one through the steps and you're IN!

Not to worry! We all did it once--somehow--and here we are......G.

Happy Birthday Buttoneer!!!

Hope to see you at the Swap. Hugs and kisses, Hope your day was fabulous just like you!

My Grandson found his first fossil! He also got to explore a cave not far from his home. Thanks again for sharing your collection with him.

Is there a special swap discussion thread up? I put in my Have List, I should have most of those plants available and have even started potting up a few things when I cleaned out the front bed yesterday.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't think so--we really need a discussion Thread--or the "haves"
Thread will be full of chatting.....

"Wants" usually go into the Chatting thread--NOT in the "haves" Thread.
Right?

Anyone???

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes Gita, I meant a discussion thread on haves and wants. The mention of posting my Haves List was that I finally put up my list on the Haves thread where their is no discussion.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I get it now--- "on" as in "about". Not "on' as physically ON the Haves Thread....

SO--We need a Spring Swap Discussion Thread--"ON" which we can chat
about haves and wants,,,,,and a "Haves" Thread, on which we cannot...

Does this make sense? SO--Aspen--PLEASE give us a Discussion Thread.....

g.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

My intention was to use this thread as the general discussion thread, to include discussing haves/wants, and that I would make a continuation thread if/when it got too long. Seems easier to me than having this thread that we've been using for general discussion and a separate thread for generally discussing haves/wants. So go ahead and start discussing away :) Specific Haves/Wants thread (one post per person) is also set up. Note, both the general discussion and specific Haves/Wants threads are "stickied" at the top of the Mid Atlantic discussion forum.

Specific consolidated HAVE & WANT lists (one entry per person) here:

Holly, that is quite a list! I'm always interested in more lily of the valley and Virginia bluebells, so can you add me for those. And, after seeing ssg's pictures of her dragon wing begonia last year, I was on the lookout for those too. Thanks!

I recently saw on pinterest how easy it seems to propogate certain shrubs from cuttings. I probably won't have time to get these going, but I can offer up cuttings that you can take the day of the swap if you are interested in viburnum carlesii, lilac 'Miss Kim', wiegelia noid, hydrangea 'Quick Fire', hydrangea 'Blue Wave', and a pretty cascading spirea noid.

Holly, I would be interested in
Hosta 'Stiletto'
Walking Iris (what color?)
Pickerel Weed
Bamboo Poles

Terri, we would like 3 Tricyrtis 'Sinonome' if you have sufficient supply to share with others too.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, what an amazing list! :D

I'd love a Blue Mouse Ear! Such a cute little hosta.

And Sweet Woodruff.

Pink Begonia Dragon Wing. I'm growing them from seed as well cuttings form last year's plant, but it's not going as well as I'd hoped!

And finally, marigolds!

Is trumpet vine well behaved?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

David, got you down for the Trycyrtis 'Sinonome'.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

ssg: I have tons of sweet woodruff, so you don't need to ask Holly for that. And trumpet vine is NOT well behaved -- be wary.

You know I fell in love with your Begonia Dragon Wing (was yours red or pink?). I have kept two sticks of cuttings I took from your plant alive (still bright green but no leaves) but would like to see some "action" from them. I finally got fed up and put the pot outside, hoping some light would trigger new growth. Your plant last fall was spectacular.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

SSG - You might want to check with your neighbors to see how enthusiastic they are about having trumpet vine growing in their yards, if you get my drift.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh yikes, no thank you on the trumpet vine! D: I'll stick with the clematis!

Happy, I didn't realize you had a lot of sweet woodruff. I really like it, but it's looking terrible on the drier bed so I'm thinking about planting more on the bottom of the slope.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Trumpet vine can be fine on large properties, but in close-in suburban neighborhoods such as yours with your type of soil it will likely escape your lot in short order. This is especially true since having seen your yard, it is evident that it would be planted near the edge of your property rather than in the center of your back yard.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

David, not too sure about the Hosta 'Stiletto' but everything else is looking good. I am pretty sure that this mystery plant from the GH is the walking iris. Isn't it beautiful?

SSG, My Tumpet VIne is a real beauty but no it really is not well behaved and I wouldn't plant it anywhere that you don't have plenty of space, definitely not good for a small area or in a flower garden.
Happy if you have a lot of the Sweet Woodruff I will take it off my list and let you bring it. I have some to share but not a huge amount.

That is sure one beautiful iris, Holly.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Holly, that IS a pretty iris. If you have enough, can you add it for me too?

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Holly, do you have any more hellebore seedlings that aren't spoken for? If you know the colors, I'd like one each of pink and white. Also, can I have a bit of your chocolate mint? I bought it last year and actually killed it. Who kills mint, anyway? Apparently me. :(

Thanks!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'll bring sweet woodruff for anyone who wants it. ssg, I'll bring you some on Wednesday.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Aspenhill, I have you down.
Typwc, I have you down for the Helle's, I have to find the Choclate Mint we moved it last year from the Veggie Garden but I am pretty sure some of it got put behind the barn. I will let you know if I can't find it.

Parkville, MD(Zone 7b)

Great, thanks Holly!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll bring a bag of uprooted chocolate mint at least... will pot some if I get a chance. I noticed today it's creeping up past the corner of the driveway again... It's definitely one of my all time favorite plants, even if it is a "garden thug." The flavor is so sweet & clean, perfect for tea.

Aspen-Terri, do you have any more of that Tricyrtis available?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Critter, yes on the Tricyrtis. How many do you want?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Put me down for chocolate mint!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Jill, If you have plenty I will let you bring it and take it off my list.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Holly, I have plenty of Chocolate Mint! Maybe I can recruit my Garden Girl to help pot up some sprigs. I don't have such an abundance of 'Kentucky Colonel' spearmint any more, but I'll see if any extras pop up (or take some cuttings) in case somebody wants that one also.

Terri, I'd like as many as 3 Tricytris if you have them - 1 for me, 1 for my MIL, and 1 for Martina (I don't know if she's coming to the swap for sure). But 1 would do fine also... if it survives, I can share it with them later!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Jill, Please mark a pot for Typwc
