This morning it was just above freezing and the snow was starting to melt. This is it for the season for us, we emptied out the fridge and the plumber's coming tomorrow to drain the pipes. We'll be back at the end of March/ early April.
weather in the garden #135
No snow here, Pam....there was some at my son's house however. Kind of sad leaving for the winter, but something to look forward to in the spring! Keep in touch......Freezing fog right now, my driveway is slippery....warming up to 40 today.
39° & gloomy It has been sprinkling off & on all morning.
We saw a friend this weekend who is an environmental engineer and knows the area well. He says we are on a mountain, Warren is at the top, and our place is the highest point. That explains a lot. Sometimes I hear thunder and smell rain but we don't get it, then I see on the radar that small rain clouds went around us. Other times it feels like there's a cloud just sitting on us, like the photo below from last week.
Warren is high, thus your snow! Foggy this morning...it froze on all the surfaces except the blacktop, thanks very much! Looked like an enchanted village up here, but I'd rather have the sun....should be close to 50 today...yes!
37° & gloomy
Supposed to be in the mid 50s today.......awesome!
33° now. frost on car windshield & grass west of the house.
Foggy! Hard to see across the road......supposed to be near 60, but temp is only 40 right now.....Senior Center is having its turkey dinner today...hope I can find my way to town.....
48° dripping bit this afternoon. Hope you make it do your dinner ok
went from 59 to 43 today
that is coming our way this weekend jumper
28 and a dusting of snow
Hope that it stays a dusting. We are supposed to be getting a bit of snow & sleet tomorrow. 35° so winter has arrived. the milder air the last 2 days did no good for outside work because we had rain.
The forecast was for at least an inch or 2 of snow but we dodged the bullet & got a little sleet....hope this luck continues.....
we had an inch and it melted fast - got the veggie garden roto-tilled in the morning and brought the snow blower into the garage - now i am ready for winter - latest ever getting the veggie garden closed.
then went xmass shopping with the better half - that was more taxing than the roto-tilling!!
came home with a cool owl ornament for the tree.
high of 28 today
25 now snow coming, but may not stay.
nice iced berry pictures. those ice storms can leave behind great photo opportunities - although there is usually damage as well - hope everything bounces back up!
low of 20 here this morning
Lovely winter pics, VV. Your hollies look like they are indifferent to ice. Since my few are young, it is noticable that the red berries up to three feet high are already gone, but noone seems to go after the yellow berries which are sheltered by spiny leaves.
We are using the lull between storms to finish clean up. This time DH did most of the work arranging the shed, and I cut evergreen and cranberry coteaneaster sprays for decorations.
The ground is frozen again now after a rainy thaw. Overnight temp was 22 F but since it's warmed up to 32, and air feels pressured, and the sky is very gray, there is little doubt a storm is headed our way. I suppose it's finally time to spread the salt hay over the tender plants. I usually do it sooner than necessary.
Still only 30F (-1C) here today - so, yes, more opportunities for imagery.
The Winterberry and Possumhaw Holly here don't take much offense to ice, but the American Holly with their broad evergreen leaves, well, it's a different story.
1. Ilex opaca 'Farage'
2. Viburnum dilatatum Cherry Falls
3. Ilex decidua Round Robin
4. Viburnum x carlcephalum 'Cayuga'
5. Viburnum setigerum Bleeding Heart
Best wishes for getting these beauties through the winter, VV. They certainly are cheerful-looking in the winter garden. I imagine you use dessicants on the broad-leafed evergreens. Since I wasn't sure about them needing much, I went pretty light on the spray compared to the rhodis. Now I doubt we'll have many more 40 degree days until spring.
No antidessicants used here - I'm not a believer in their prolonged efficacy, though I know there are those that swear by them.
If I've sited a plant that will be exposed to extensive winds or winter sun while it has a restricted root system, I'll cover it with something (burlap, etc.) to shield it. Older plants like my American Holly trees are well-adapted natives here, and I don't give them anything extra during the winter.
cold, the storms seem to be giving us a miss. that's ok with me
Messy out today.....looks like sleet fell rather than the snow that was predicted.....now there's a freezing drizzle out there.....very gloomy.
Really dark here too, but it is snowing.. overnight low of 26, now 32.
My guess about the antidessicants is that it all depends. It is essential for rhodis that are exposed to a windy area in my yard or they would likely perish, and I've skipped it and then lost shrubs. I don't use it for anything near the house. Seems the holly leaf is especially adapted with its waxy coating.
had some freezing rain overnight
34° less than an inch of snow. Driveway has been cleared with a push shovel.
Finally got rid of the ice on the drive so I could get my garbage out to the street.....never fails....garbage day= bad weather!
yes, happens. DH had pushed the snow off with a shovel & a gravel driveway so ok. The plow guy comes with snow is 3" or more at our request. 34° now at 11:30 pm.
Snowing heavily here right now.....looks pretty, but I really hate snow!
light snow, but as RD says, heavier towards the south. 33° & going to be colder tomorrow. DH got our tree & it is in the garage. Too early to put it up inside the house.
driveway here is all ice/snow
No one showed up to plow out my drive! My regular person retired after a heart attack....called new person, left messages, no show....not happy here, pushing 3" off the drive at 7:15 this morning. Stayed out a half hour & made a dent.....on my way out again in a few minutes. Then to the phone book to hire someone else!
Please don't overdo it, Marilyn.
Tough luck. DH uses a 'pusher' instead of a shovel when he does smaller bits. Pushing is better than lifting.
Yes, you're right Iris......Rosemary, I went out twice, & still have the back patio to shovel off.....called the 4th name on my plow list & have not heard back! Expecting 6-8" on Saturday, cannot shovel that, must find someone.......I thought the economy was still bad, but these snowplow owners seem very independent!
Luckily when our plow person moved to Florida he recommended another person to take over. 2nd person is not as good, but he plows our 80 ft driveway if there is over 3". Our request on the amount. RD perhaps they feel there is enough business--commercial areas etc. Perhaps friends could reccomend someone. Luckily today is oue food shopping day & we can get a bit extra in the house.
temps went from 7 this am to 18 today
