In spite of a warm weekend on the way, winter is sneaking in.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Yes it is! I'm hoping for enough of a thaw today and tomorrow to get the last few things in the ground, both bulbs and plants. Yesterday even with my trusty drill some places were too frozen to get through.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i still have to rake before any bulbs can go in - feels like I am cutting it close although I waited longer in the past

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

That drill digger is the way to go! I'm in the same boat here. I started talking to the workers at Mahoney's and viola! more bulbs came home for the warmer weather expected today. Never mind how far below freezing it is at night. In honor of the Marathon victims there are many groups planting bulbs along the Marathon route, so the stores are stocked for hundreds to be sold at a time. A few of the mail order bulbs are on back order until December (ugh, that means indoor use to me).

Thomaston, CT

No snow here the other night, just a few flurries........today was sunny & 62.....just beautiful!

Staten Island, NY(Zone 6a)

I put my roses to bed today, it was 58 when I went outside and was drizzling fine so I had to put on my Sombero(hat).laugh

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Today.

Still managed to plant 50 Scilla Spring Beauty, 5 Clematis, 8 Japanese Iris, and mulch. Now I'm drying out.

nice day to work outside - dug up and brought in dahlia's, planted some bulbs and a couple shrubs and of course raked.

South Hamilton, MA

How do you overwinter your dahlias, Bill?

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

We got a lot done too. Great weather weekend. Frits, naked ladies and several dozen more tulips and crocus. Earlier yesterday it was dry so for the first time in years we could actually use the mulcher on our lawn mower. Finished moving herbs indoors and put away a dozen or more pots. Watered the plants to bring on the rain--it worked. By 4 pm it was misty and rain overnight. Still warm today.

South Hamilton, MA

Quite a bit of rain & wind overnight, haven't measured the rain as yet. 62° & temp will be falling.

Thomaston, CT

Super day....65 & sunny...spread ashes on my peonies, & placed burlap around my camellia & old wood hydrangea.......

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Wind and hard rain woke me up in the night, but this morning was gorgeous :-)

South Hamilton, MA

42° sunny & windy I hate a cold wind.

Thomaston, CT

Very nippy today, 40s & windy...clothes dried on the line quickly....actually, I'm surprised they stayed on the line!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

lucy - I just stick them in a box with peat moss and keep them in the basement. have not had too many issues. i have them in plastic bags so i do not mix them up in the box.

South Hamilton, MA

ok, next question==where do you get the peat moss? Can you think of a substitute?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

any garden store would have it - try HD or lowes even an ace hardware might have it.

you can always just put them in plastic grocery bags with the peat - some of mine do not have much peat at all - the peat is there to absorb moisture as the dahlia's dry out a bit - if the bags are open and the basement is dry you should be good.

I use the peat from the bags I bought the dahlia's in originally or the wood shavings.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I use peat but some sites say to use sand and I haven't noticed the difference when overwintering bulbs and tubers.

South Hamilton, MA

Thanks might try next winter & get some dahlias in the spring. that is sort of backwards.

Thomaston, CT

Last year was the first year I overwintered dahlias successfully.......I put them in a plastic bucket with damp sheets of newspaper around them, placed another plastic bucket on top, & left them in my unheated garage....everything directions say not to do, but that's the only thing that worked for me....ever.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

wow - surprised they made - stick with what works though

was not a great dahlia year for me - although I changed the site so that may have been some of the problem

Thomaston, CT

Mine were less than great! I am changing the site for the spring......weather was kind of nice here today.....just about 50.......

South Hamilton, MA

In the 40s today. DD arrived from MN & she likes to rake leaves, she says. ☺

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Hah! Are you going to put her to the test?

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm sure she will!!

South Hamilton, MA

She walked in from the RR station, about 4 miles so should be able to rake leaves, although it is drizzle off & on. 43°

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

I like this weather to rake as they do not blow around and stay on the rake because they are wet - they do weight much more though

South Hamilton, MA

They raked a bit this morning, 2 tarp loads down the hll to the compost, but eons more to go. We have a heavily wooded property.
