I am trying to grow moss in a section of my yard and some pest keeps digging it up and making holes. I've attached a photo of the most recent hole. I have put a quarter coin next to it to give you some perspective on size. I put a twig down the hole and it sunk down easily to over a foot. Do you have any idea what might be making such a hole in my yard? And if you do . . . do you have any idea on how to get rid of the pest that is doing this? Thanks for any insights you might have here.

Great chart! but they don't mention snakes. If you have time hang out for a little while see if you can watch what goes in there
I always drop some garlic or Irish Spring soap down any hole I find
Snakes don't dig holes, but good point, they would happily occupy one.
They dont mention toads either LOL, but to be honest there are many, many animals thast make holes and afterwards dont even use the hole / Burrow but it is used as a fast hide out when there are predators around, we find toads are great at digging holes in garden but normally these holes would be in a border or beside a bit of shade as these amphibians like a cooler place but, maybe needs must.
I do agree that it would be wise to try stay close and try actually see what is exiting and entering as one thing for sure, you dont want a nast bite or sting either.
There was an almost identical thread maybe last year on one of the garden forums and to be honest, it had everyone wound up, after many, many opinions you would have thought some folks were talking killer man eating ants but the problem was never solved and it was put down as a hoax however, if your the garden that has this type of thing in it the easiest way to solve your fears is to sit with camera for as long as possible as you don't want to stab sticks into a hole where there may be a friend of the garden like toads / frogs eat all your slugs / snails and nor do you want to injure an animal, better to kill outright and prevent long-term suffering'
Keep us informed of your findings and we will see how many different ideas everyone comes up with.
Good luck. hope it's not a flying one eyed gremlin that likes to eat straw hats and drinks best quality apple juice LOL.
Best of luck. WeeNel.
You could try dusting around the hole with flour, chalk or other white powder. Maybe whatever it is will leave tracks. The powder needs to stay dry, so if the moss is still needing daily water this may not work. Worth a try!
