Beginner Gardening: Mystery hole, 1 by Umgowa

I am trying to grow moss in a section of my yard and some pest keeps digging it up and making holes. I've attached a photo of the most recent hole. I have put a quarter coin next to it to give you some perspective on size. I put a twig down the hole and it sunk down easily to over a foot.
