Why do the facebook, twitter & that other tag have to take up the whole left side? I don't do any of them and would prefer being able to read forums.
the new problem
Jo -- I feel the same way.... a lot of wasted space. It could have been put within the banner, or in the empty space above "replies and views"
for us on smaller screens [not a 24+" desk top monitor] I'd rather have more usable space for reading, not empty white space.
Another vote to rid of this project.
Someone posted 5 pictures. 4 are on one line 1 on the next.
Supposedly the "Tech team" has all the answers.
If I had incompetent people like that on my team they would be terminated immediately.
I love the big red columns on the voting booth also. Check that out.
DG has become an absolute mess!
They got the voting booth straightened out. Maybe the whole site will be next.
I think the face book and twitter should be an optional preference like the ads.
I don't do either one and don't care for the empty space.
And I'd like to add my Ditto to all of the above! Couldn't have said it better myself! :-)
The "Previous photo - Next photo" bug is still in full force. Not fixed. Please fix it.
I am so tird of having the social networks shoved down our throats- I am a senior citizen who still just uses a phone to make calls, and I write my appointments on a paper calendar.I don't share my personal details with the world by way of twitter, facebook or any other . I have my cell phone set to not allow any texts- I don't even want to know how to text! I love to use my computer to find information and to research things, but I believe the internet has opened up too many dangerous and negative issues. Real communication is fast disappearing among young people, and that is really sad. Now to jump off my soapbox!
When will we be able to delete an item from our tradelist our add our own picture?
Has the zip code search for members been deleted? We're having another Central NY Plant swap and wanted to invite members with area zip codes! So frustrating.

I just clicked on "Your Tradelist" to view my own and confirmed I have the ability to delete items and add photos within my tradelist without any problem.

For right now, the Extras can be found through this link: http://davesgarden.com/extras.php and that includes the search-by-ZIP feature.
I agree on no social networking.
That's one feature on here that is nice, D-Mail.
I can D-Mail someone & they are the only one that can see it, not like facebook where the whole world gets it.
Everyone who is friends with someone you know wants to be your be friend too.
What is with that ? I don't want to be friends with a "Joe Blow" from some far off place.
The blank on the left side is a big waste of space for us subscribers. Put some thing useful there if it can't be eliminated.
Terry: you're a saint and have probably been more upset about this mess as it occupies your days and nights now.
However.
I regret to agree with the initial post, above, and feel strongly that the conversion I amateurish at best. The 3" banner for social media taking up the entire left margin should be removed.

it just occurred to me that this is like when basketball or baseball or hockey goes on strike. People are so disgusted with having their pastimes taken away involuntarily that the sports take years to recover their viewers, attendance hits new lows, people boo and hiss and smear the players, coaches, managers, teams.
I'm afraid the conversion for me and many is going to have this same effect across the web and around the world.
BLAH BLAH BLAH about necessary changes to the site. We are adults and paying customers and apparently DG has never heard the adage that
THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
Nevermore.

Jo & Bernie, I understand where you're coming from, but social sites and networks are now a permanent fixture in our daily lives, whether we like them or not. We have a lot of members who move among many sites such as DG, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. And as I mentioned previously, I believe that white space beneath the links is used for displaying ads to non-subscribers. Again, whether we like it or not, advertising helps pay the bills and allows websites to offer some or all fo their content free. I can't imagine what it would be like if every site required a fee just to see their content. We'd all be very limited on the sites we could afford to even visit (let alone join and participate.)
Terry, couldn't those be a part of the header? But, what you are saying is that that wasted (to most of us) space has to be there for ads. But where where they before this big change? I have my preferences set so I don't see them, so really DON"T know. Wasn't just be a smart aleck.
I agree with Jnette- if the links to the socisl networks has to be there, PLEASE put it somewhere else rather than cause a hugs blank space all the way down the left side of the page. I agree, Terry that we have to live with it, but we shouldn't have it in our face as we try to read a forum- we have paid to be here, after all. PLEASE DO SOMETHING WITH IT! Thanks!

I agree that we need to keep our members first and foremost in all that we do. And we do. (We didn't go on strike and demand something to return to doing what it is we do - which can cause fans to become disenchanted.)
But if the customer never wants anything to change, then I'm afraid I'd have to disagree with you and say the customer can't always be right. Over time, everything must change, unless it's dead and preserved for posterity.
Change is not always for the better. Let me remind you that the beginning of cable tv started with a fee for the programming with no commercials. Station id and local weather warnings were the only interruptions. Now we pay for the cable channels and have commercials. I have counted as many as 12 at a time.
Will we have to pay a subscription fee and still take a back seat to the (ads are our first concern). approach?
The customer pays for a service and expects it to work.
I don't pretend to speak for anyone but myself. I had to laugh over time at the " bring the old Facebook back" petitions that circulated every time the site changed.
I think it's great that DG wants to get with the times. But consider this. Facebook is a free service (at least to the consumer) with at present in excess of 1.11 billion users.*
I have been a member of the Facebook community since 2006.
They notify members in advance of prospective changes.
They offer users the chance to try a the new features before the entire site rolls over.
They offer users the option to return to the previous format.
Most site changes are cosmetic, and implemented successfully across the site overnight.
FB makes small changes to individual features over time which has acclimated users to site changes over time.
I have been a member of Dave's Garden since 2006.
DG is a paying site whose numbers don't compare to FB.
DG existed well before FB (which was born in 2004).
Many DG users users and subscribers have been with the site for longer than FB has existed.
DG has not made substantive changes that affect the entire site in many years(?!).
DG offered no notice of changes.
DG's changes are substantive with entire features disappearing and what remains impossible or at best difficult to use.
I'm just pointing out what appear to be obvious comparisons on how a behemoth free site makes changes which accommodate its users as a community
and a small site consisting of paid subscriptions and users and which purports to be a community does not.

The right half of posts are not showing up for me, on 3 different devices.
LOL, guess we were just letting off steam. Debi K had a real problem.
I stay mostly in NE forum, and most of those. I decreased my font which is better. This thread is not a problem.

What's that Linda? I can't hear you.
I just got a notice that my subscription expires in a month- very timely-this may be a good time to just fade away.
Jo, you are going to give up your 2006?? That would be sad.
Thing is, you probably aren't the only one.
The whole thing started when Dave took the money & run. Lots of people blamed the company that bought him out. Wasn't the case at all. So lots quit then & now we will lose more.
I started in June of 2002.
Comparing a site like Facebook that collects data from every user in order to increase its income through advertising is hardly a reasonable comparison - and exactly the reason why I'll never patronize such a site.
My home page look changes often the last few weeks. Today part of the article on mosaic's was cut off on the right side. Im just going to wait until there is an all clear and then see if I have problems.
The "Tech Team" probably has futuristic computers, so no problems show up for them.
Any other web sites I visit don't make you scroll to read them. Do they know something this team doesn't know ?
I dislike having to scroll on all posts to get rid of the white space on the left. I agree with joparrott that it's about time to just fade away. Dave's Garden will lose a lot of paying members like me because of these miserable changes.
You've been here a long time, too, I see.
Apparently longevity don't count on here.

Bernie, they don't. And they have tried to test on as many different setups as they could, from tablets to smaller monitors, to wide monitors.
Do you know what your screen resolution is set to? If you can right-click anywhere on your screen (you'll have to minimize or close DG to see it), then look at your at your resolution settings and let me know what it says, we may be able to help you eliminate the scrolling (if your resolution settings are adjusted correctly, you should not be having to scroll to read the text on a full-size display of the site.)

I know these changes have had a few bumps in the road, and I sincerely apologize for them. But they are not miserable :-) The irony in this is that the same amount of space on the left was there before the changes. You may have ignored it because there was "stuff" (navigation links) in that area. The main difference is that the text area no longer expands based as wide as your screen. And that was done in order to reduce eye strain on our readers.
Mine is set to 1366X766. Is this correct? I have stuff cut off on the right side. Not able to scroll to get it.
Based on a quick Google search of those dimensions, I'm going to guess you've got a 19" monitor.
1. Is that the recommended setting? (The same steps to check it will usually indicate if that's the recommended resolution or not.)
and
2. Have you zoomed in with your browser to anything larger than 100%?
It says it is the recommended setting and I have my view set at 100%
Mine is 1024 x 768.
