Casual Thursday at Sallyg's

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Casual Thursday- at Sallyg's
Thursday June 20
anytime after 4:00

Drop in, and hang out. 'donnerville' Sally will be here after work, she's bringing some Chinese-ey food, I'll make some chicken curry, we'll all discuss how horrible our gardens are and then decide what more we can cram in to them!

Putting it on my calendar.......
<->I'll bring some cut-up, mixed fresh fruit/melons...to mellow the tongues after the Curry...

Gita

Edited to add that--instead of fruit--I will bring a bottle of wine and a baggie of
my special made Latvian Pirags. I ONLY sacrifice my time and energy to make these once a year--
for Christmas--as I am "expected" to bring these to any and all get-togethers.

Fruit is easy for someone else to bring. Someone with less time to "make things"...

sounds great!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Rats! Enjoy yourselves.

I am in Annapolis this week on babysitting duty.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, coleup, and I had a great time at Sally's last time. Hope more people can join us this time.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

What fun! Greenthumb and I are hoping to be there.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd love to come, and depending on how things shake out, might actually be able to make it. Thank you so much for doing this, Sally!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sounds like fun.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--did you see that i changed my food offerings?
This will work better...
G.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'll also bring wine, plus some fruit and maybe a purchased cake or if I get slightly ambitious I'll make an angel food cake because it goes well with fruit. And whipped cream. Spouse promised to cover the home front. Or maybe trifle. Or not.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Sally, will you have places for us to moor our boats?

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

I hope to be able to make it too, sounds like fun.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Allow two hours to cross the bridge, though, Dave...

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally, sounds like fun! I should be able to make it by 6 at the latest. I should probably bring some sort of dessert.

Hi VV! Did you get to enjoy our tropical humidity during your visit?

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Sally, I'll try to make it too. I could come straight from work and be there by 4:30 or 5:00. I'll confirm one way or the other later next week. It is always so nice to get together.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally---Look what you started!

You will have a crowd!!!! Hope its a nice day and we can hang outside.
I can bring a pile of lawn chairs--about 5 or 6. LMK

ssgardener:

You hardly know the half of it.

Drove up from KY on Friday, trying to innocently make my way to the midyear Board of Trustees meeting of the Holly Society of America in Millville, NJ. Did reasonably fine in the lighter rain through West Virginia, but once I reached the Mid-Atlantic states it seemed that the elements and fate were against me.

An unannounced wreck on I-70 just east of Hagerstown MD wasted nearly an hour sitting still on the steamy asphalt. That delayed our arrival for the fun passing-by of Baltimore, just in time for rush hour. I understand that lots of people use I-695 - but do they all have to use it when I'm there? All lanes full, all the way around to I-95.

The rest of the way to Millville really wasn't that bad - if driving into the teeth of an albeit mild hurricane can be called decent. This was the very first time I received severe weather warnings on my Blackberry - with the recommended course of action to EVACUATE. Sorry to diminish the opinion that some of you might hold of me...

What made it worthwhile was a fine dinner at The Runaway Chefs in Millville - an exquisitely flavorful Caesar salad (garlic, anchovies, parmesan, lemon, mmm...) on the way to an excellent serving of Crab Imperial. The tribulations of the trip wafted away.

The humidity of Saturday was mostly avoided because we were indoors for the board meeting, at the historic Wood's Mansion.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I hope y'all have a lovely time, I'll be thinking about you as I'll be melting in 96F temps :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

yahoo!! its become an Event! The more the merrier!! Might have enough for volleyball! Gita will smear us all!

Sorry for my absence- the storm Monday night gave us a bolt of lightning in the street right at the end of our driveway. POW!, would have sworn someone fired a gun inside my kitchen. No internet till today, and looks like a tv got cooked
: ^(
Verizon fixed us up but not the tv...

What crazy storms for June in this area!!! Our apologies to our visiitng VV.

I was thinking if anyone wanted to make more of a day around here, they might want to check out that Daylily place Paul told us about. Ellicott City is roughly west of me about 40 minutes. My daylilies are starting= Suzie Wong, Happy Returns, Stella D'Oro; another week might bring how much more?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--YES! Looks like an "event" coming up.....

Is the detour from I-97 to Tunnel #895 still on?
I still have shivers thinking of my drive home the last time......

Where does I-97 take you if you ignore the tunnel turn-off to #895?
Would it dump one, a bit further up, on I-95? Easy--peezy---

Hmmm....wonder who all would come if I held the next such "casual" get-together"?????
Not too many people have been here.....Paul, Sally, donner, Jill. That's it....
Of course--There isn't much to tour my garden about....it is most compact....

You can Google "White Marsh Mall" and hit it on the nose....one mile from my house...
I-95 Exit 67B.

Just wondering....I know Holly and Ric could come--they are only 1+ hr from here...

We can talk about it....Gita

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

I will be there!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd come! I can imagine the volleyball game -- Gita on one side of the net holding a glass of wine in one hand and with her other hand tied gently behind her back, all the rest of us on the other side of the net. Somehow, Gita is still winning by a large margin!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ric and I were actually talking about driving down. Not too sure a bit of a long drive for a evening get together and a late night drive home. But we are considering it.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Whoo-ee! What fun!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

happy---

I have not played V-Ball for 35 years---that is all just one of the wonderful (OUCH!!) things to look back on.
One of the best long-term carry-overs, having been in sports for a good part of my life is a certain mindset:

IF you have been a "jock" for a couple decades or more-you have an innate respect for your body's condition.
Keeping it in as good a shape as i can is one of mine. I does get harder, though.
(Sorry--i got a bit serious here)....

My body has too many "glitches" by now...and too many things hurt. I just don't show it...
Like JB--a little wine makes all these issues a little bit easier to live wit--h for us tough, old broads.

Here's to ya!!! G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Yay Paul! SSG! Pat and David!

Jan I'd try to at least buy you coffee this week but with work every day I'm "treading water" LOL

We're thinking of you too Becky! Could well be melting and 95 here. 8 ^P

Gita- mark says:
Your return route=
Take 97 to Beltway West (Catonsville or Towson) then go about two exits and take BW Parkway North. That gives you an exit for 895.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I still have 4-5 plants from Becky's garden. I was waiting for them to bloom so that I could ID them and offer at the swap, but they haven't bloomed yet. There's probably a gardenia and jasmine and some other fragrant climbers. I'm afraid I won't be able to keep them alive until the fall if I can't ID them and look up their requirements.

I was thinking about bringing them to Sally's. Maybe you could help me ID them and take some home with you!

VV, that sounds like a nightmarish trip. Friday getaway traffic can be bad to begin with, but it's so much worse when you add a bad storm. We're expecting another derecho-like storm today. Too bad you can't join us at Sally's!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally--

Thanks for the directions.....I will try that.....will also look at my map Atlas to see this, visually.

I remember "that dark and stormy night' that the final detour DID take me on BW Pkwy. and the last
turn off to #895 was off of that.
For a while--I was back on I-97 S. at Exit 16. I was freaking out..like...WHAAAA??? I been here already!!!!

It is growing VERY ominous here at this very time--getting heavy, dark clouds. The radio is crackling...
non stop......I expect, in a few minutes, it will be pouring rain..........again............:^/

Maybe it will be a good day to go through some piles of papers sitting on the floor here in my computer room.
They ALL need to sorted and filed....years of it......

Everyone--stay safe!!! Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Don't talk about filing -- that'd get me depressed!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I get depressed just thinking about it--that is why it has never gotten done.

Nor will it today....gonna roast a couple chickens I P/U at my fave bargain spot....$2,76 each.
G.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sally, I figured with the new job I wouldn't push for a meetup. Although it would have been nice. You guys have fun. If it becomes a regular thing, maybe sometime I'm down I can join you.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

looking ahead to our get-together......I went a bit "out on a limb" today and bought some beautiful,
new, hybrid Hostas with the thought that some of you may want to have one--or two...
After all--there will be at least 4 shade gardeners at sally's! Paul--Donner--coleup, and greenthumb.

They are VERY pretty and a bit different from the usual greens. Lots of white--with just a bit of green.
We had a whole rack-full of them. I moved a few of the trays to a table in the garden area--
as they seem to be selling quite well there...Saw one man buy a whole tray....

Her is a picture of the seven I bought.

The first 3 from the left are "Fire and Ice". They have a slight 'wave" to their leaves.
The next two are "Moonstruck"--more slender leaves..
Th first little one in the front is "Hotspur"---and the other one is "Lakeside Cupcake"...
***These are not dwarf--the tag says they will grow to 15"-18" tall.

If you want a more---run to your nearest HD....They are all on sale for $2.50 a pot + tax. (reg. $3.98).
Of course--I would like to be reimbursed if you want any of these. If not--i am returning them.

I will be working again Tuesday and will be happy to p/u any more you may like.....LMK!!!

Y'all probably have what you want from my yard, but if there is anything on my "haves" list I can bring for you, please let me know. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9472656

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, I'll bite. I'll put to good use the lakeside cupcake and Hotspur.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, I won't be asking for any more hosta. I spent yesterday getting the ones I have in place for now. But thanks for the show and offer. I have a fair amount of 'white' variegation in my shady beds, so I'm looking more for golden or blue. Not actively looking, just that's what I would accept it it came along.

happy, I'll take Drimiopsis if you still have it to offer, thanks. I had some from Buttoneer, it was interesting.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, I'm so sorry, I left my Drimiopsis plant at Jan's. I don't even recall if anyone claimed it, but I brought it to Jan's and I didn't take it home with me!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Gita, what a deal on those hostas! I'm not quite sure if I'll make it Thursday, but I'll check to see if our HD has them... I've got a 'Fire & Ice' (love it!), and the other 3 are also striking... all of the "Lakeside" series are supposed to be very good, I think, so I'll especially be looking for a 'L. Cupcake'.

I don't know if I'll be anything like halfway caught up by then, but I will try to make it out on Thursday if I can. Joyanna may or may not join me depending on how late Jim thinks he'll be working.

Aspen-Terri, you'd be going up 95 if you're going straight from work, right?

Is anybody coming through Frederick? Would love to hitch a ride, especially if I don't have Sunshine Girl along for company.

Oh, and Gita -- there is too a lot to tour in your garden! It may be "compact," but it's full of so many beautiful & interesting plants, not to mention the stories that go with them!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

happy, no big deal! I only have a thousand other plants to worry about already!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Jill....Yes--something always in bloom...and I did not plan it that way...it just IS.

My one Red Epi (the Ackermanii) is full of buds--opening as we speak.
I see a few tiny buds showing on the other one too...the flashy, hot magenta one.

And my DL's are ready to pop too.

On the Hostas--I have:
Paul--"Hotspur" and "Cupcake" (one each)
Donner--"Fire and Ice" (one)

Sally--last Sunday I saw ONE Hosta that had yellow in it. IF it is still there--I can p/u for you.
Plan to leave a bit early today so i can go look. I work 10-2.

Not sure how long this $2.50 sale is on. Then--they will be $3.98.

See you soon---Gita

This is the Epi "Ackermanii" from last year...

Jill--

IF you come to Sally's--is the David Phlox you had, but forgot to bring, still available?
Did you pot it up while waiting to see me? I never got it with the original order at Jen's swap.

If not--or wayyyy too late---No biggie....honest! Gita
