2013 Group Buy for Fall Bulbs :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nope, B&B shipping is fine. 10% of the total to ship to MD. That's why it's toooo easy for me to order from them during their fall sales!

SHipping is pretty much offset by the current sale... 5% off for ordering early gets bumped to 10% off if I pay right away, so figure the price of anything you'd like would be as listed. If you see anything you want a whole bag of, just get it sent directly to you of course.

If Avalon has been having disease problems (and B&B would know), then I'd much rather get their alternate.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I can do five Capree Elizabeth (MILs name) Not heartbroken if we don't get enough to order it though.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, can you please add the following for me? Thanks.

Iris reticulata 'Harmony': 25
Leucojum 'Gravetye Giant': 10

Um... a few more prices from B&B, because I know I'd get some of these if others wanted them also...

N. 'Thalia Sun' (white with a sunny center) $5.70 for 5 bulbs, https://store.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/?sku=01-0512

N. 'Extravaganza' (gorgeous white and coral-PINK double), $6.10 for 3 bulbs, https://store.brentandbeckysbulbs.com/spring/productview/?sku=01-0431

N. 'Smiling Twin' (collar or "butterfly" daff, white & yellow, one of B&B's own seedlings): $3.65 for 5 bulbs

As long as we're looking at B&B now, I wanted to remind you about these! The above prices are based on ordering in bags of 25; they'd be a little less if we got to 50.

I really LOVE double daffodils -- they look (and smell!) like peonies, or roses. :-)

I will take N. 'Smiling Twin' 10

I just noticed that you are pricing them by batch (5 or 3). So if it is easier, I'll change my Extravaganza order to 6....

Any interest in Lycoris radiata?

I think it should be hardy for most of us. Mobot says: "Winter hardy to USDA Zones 5b-10 where bulbs may be grown in organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best flowering is in part shade. Plant bulbs 9” apart in fall with the top 1/4" of the neck of each bulb exposed. Plants appreciate even moisture during their growing season, but may be best sited in areas where soils remain relatively dry during the summer dormant season. Plants will naturalize by bulb-offsets and form small colonies over time. Plants are best left undisturbed in the soil. Plants have naturalized in several states in the southeastern U. S. In St. Louis, bulbs should be planted in a sheltered location to prevent winter freezing of their foliage which emerges in fall and remains evergreen throughout winter before dying back in late spring. Although completely 'bulb' hardy in St. Louis, harsh winters may greatly diminish 'flower' hardiness, thus preventing the bulbs from flowering the following summer. Lycoris radiata has thrived outdoors at the Missouri Botanical Garden Bulb Garden (USDA Zone 6a), and the culture recommendations set out herein follow the procedures currently in use at the Garden. It should be noted that standard Lycoris culture requires that bulb necks be above ground level for floral bud development in the bulb, so burying the bulbs below ground level will discourage flowering. Pot culture also has problems unless the containers are unusually large and deep so that the bulbs can establish deep and extensive root systems. If containers are too small, plants may suffer from failure-to-thrive syndrome and fail to flower."

I'd like to put them on my awful front hill. I'd buy up to 50, though would be happy with as few as 15.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sob..Sob....
IF I could just dig up EVERY Daff I now have and start fresh--I sure would like to have some of these beauties...
Mine are all so common.....with a few exceptions...

Not to be...no matter what anyone will say....If only they did not multiply so much and stayed in their
own little clumps--it would be a different story...

There are so many beautiful ones now.
Gita......:o(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You know, I don't know what I was thinking with Extravaganza... it would be easier to keep pricing in multiples of 5! I'll fix that. They'd be $10.15 for 5 bulbs if we buy 25, a little less of course if we get to 50.

If you like PINK DOUBLE daffs, we can see about adding 'Delnaslaugh' from ADR, also... deeper color than ADR's photo, but less intense than 'My Story' or (probably) Extravaganza. 'Delnaslaugh' is $7.25 for 25 bulbs, definitely more bulbs for our buck, but maybe Extravaganza has more bang... ?

Looking at those again, my personal must-haves from B&B are 'Solar Flare', 'Smiling Twin', 'Capree Elizabeth' and 'Sweet Love'... maybe also 'Precocious' and 'Roulette'... and 'Thalia Sun'... and.. ROFL! guess I need to stop looking.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

The thing about the newer varieties, and why I love the older ones, is the newer ones don't perennialize as well. I don't mind TOO much putting in a bunch of daffs once, but I don't want to ever repeat it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've only had my double & butterfly daffs (mostly newer hybrids) in for a couple of years, but they've definitely increased... however, most were double or triple nosed bulbs when planted, so I don't know if they'll continue to do as well.

I do have some older bunch-flowering doubles that I adore, 'Cheerfulness' and 'Yellow Cheerfulness', and they are both old-time varieties. 'Thalia Sun', being a sport of 'Thalia', is likely to be a good increaser. The others? not sure. so I'm all for limiting our selections, but I still want to try a few special ones. :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I didn't mean to be bullheaded -- I was just explaining the thinking behind my own choices.... I love love love looking at tulips and daffs in other people's yards! It is too hard for me to keep my yard going as it is, so I try to stick to plants that will perennialize without any work from me. That means no annuals, no coleus, no biennials, etc.!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Not bullheaded, it's a really good point. I think some of the newer ones might be good increasers, depending on their ancestry, but it's certainly not the "sure bet" that putting in a drift of 'Ice Follies' or 'Carlton' would be!

I've been putting daffs into one area at a time so I can really get that part of the garden pretty well full of bulbs before moving along to the next area. That way, I'm not guessing so much about where I have things planted already. I hate that chthunk sound of a shovel slicing through a fat bulb!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

You are reminding me -- I keep putting off (for no good reason) marking off the places in our large daffodil patch to identify where we had some holes that need to be filled this fall. I wanted Avalanche to work so much -- I planted it twice -- but it was a horrible performer. There were others, but my records aren't good. Anyway, I need to mark the holes with tracking tape. Maybe tonight....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, PINK daffodil lovers... happened to notice that B&B has 'Accent' (white petals, salmon-pink cup) listed as a "favorite" and calls it "the best landscape pink." just sayin'

'Bahama Beach' (which we're getting from ADR, and I can slide a few from my order or get another bag of them) is also a B&B "favorite," and one of their own seedlings to boot.

I see 'Las Vegas' is on their list of "favorites" also... we've finished off our first bag, but I'd be happy to order a second. It's really outstanding in size, substance, sturdiness... seems to last way longer in the vase than any other I have... and it persisted and even increased while my garden was neglected. Just a price comparison... we're getting jumbo bulbs for 91 cents; B&B's price is $1.85 to $1.30 per bulb (when ordering 250)... of course, if you get lucky during their half-off sale, B&B is a better deal. :-)

Terp, are you interested in Precocious or Capree Elizabeth from B&B? Should I just figure you're probably "good for" 5 bulbs of anything pink? (What is this with you & pink? Or are you hoping to draw your GF into the garden?)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'd order another 100 - 150 Las Vegas if you order more (I'm a bit confused on the prices -- are we good for the B&B half price version?)
I'd order Accent -- 10 to 15
I'd order Bahama Beach -- 5 - 10 (but don't cut your order down)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Salome is definitely still around -- I have some in my yard, but I don't recall noticing it this spring.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy--
Where on Earth will you be putting all the 100's of bulbs you are ordering???
I am totally in awe that you can actually get all these planted!

I cannot even wrap my mind around those numbers.....G.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, that lycoris looks interesting, but it's brick colored so I'm afraid it's going to blend in with the house too much.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

"Salome' or something that looked like it, is one I like too but it did NOT multiply for me, may even have declined, which surprises me for a single daff. "White Lion" has dwindled away.
(Now I understand why my regular Lycoris have not been blooming)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy, the B&B fall sales with big markdowns won't happen until well after our get-together. 50% off usually starts a week or two after Thanksgiving. So the ADR price on 'Las Vegas' is the one to go by... I started by ordering a crate of the XL 16/18 size bulbs I wanted for my MIL (& me too!), and that's the price on our list at the top... but if you and others want more, we can add a bag of 250 size 12/14 at $7.25 for 25 bulbs.

With 'Suada', I'm going to try to drop the XL bulbs and get 12/14 ones instead, but I really would like the huge 'Las Vegas' bulbs for my MIL. :-) Judging by how the regular 'Las Vegas' bulbs from them performed, I think the extra big ones are just going to explode over the next few years.

Gita, I think Happy will be joining the "kilobulb planters' club" this fall!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Can you add
50 of the Iris reticulata 'Harmony' to my order.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter -- all things considered I'd go for smaller and cheaper, but I'm easy either way.

Gita -- there are no accidents. I was out early this evening switching two shrubs on the hillside behind my house -- for some reason I had put a tall shrub (Hypericum) in front of a shorter one (Spiraea Princess), and buried in all the mess were two Salome markers. The bulbs must have gotten eaten up by the shrubs.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy, I added a bag of 250 of the smaller size 'Las Vegas' to our list at the top. Since you're using them for landscaping with other "regular size" bulbs, I moved your order entirely to the bag of 12/14 size ones. If nobody else wants jumbo bulbs, that's OK; I'll plant more at my in-laws. (Christmas gift for Mom -- lots of daff & tulip bulbs. Gift for Dad -- Jill does the planting. Everybody happy.)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I had some 'Salome' (best guess anyway) that I'd received by mistake in a batch of Geranium daffs... you all probably know by now that I don't have a great love for pastel peach tones (no! no! anything but peach!!), so I've been just as glad to see them slowly decline & disappear.

Terp, got you on the 'Harmony'. LMK if you want any of the B&B pinks, please.

I know we're tossing everything into play in these posts, me too, but TOMORROW LET"S PLEASE FOCUS ON THE B&B BULBS so I can get that order in.

I called B&B this afternoon to ask about delivery time for their amaryllises (which don't typically go on clearance with other bulbs in November, so this price is probably as good as it gets). They are supposed to call & let me know if they can get them to us in time for our get-together. Joyanna and I *really* want one called 'Ballerina', a pink ruffled double. It's a Sonatini variety, which means shortier, sturdier stems.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

sorry, realized I hadn't included our price on the list at the top for

N. 'Bahama Beach' $6.35 for 15 bulbs or $10.55 for 25. The prices are on the list now.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Lol Jill I just saw this post. I must have skimmed it earlier. I just don't ever see pinks. I will take a better look at the pinks tomorrow. Truth be told I had a difficult time following everything. I assume that everything is being updated on the top? I'm definitely interested in some pinks.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yep, I'm doing my best to keep that top list updated! Some daffs from B&B that we mentioned recently didn't make it to "The List" yet because we only had interest in 5 or 10 -- not enough to make me think we'd get to 25 for a price break.

ADR has some pinks, also. Note that "pink" in daffs generally means coral or apricot rather than true pink, and I don't think I've ever seen one with pink in the petals, just in the trumpet/cup or on the rim. Both Delnaslaugh (double) and Cum Laude (butterfly daff with huge split corona, looks like an orchid) have a delicate peach-pink coloration (I have them, so I can vouch that the color to me looks just like ADR's photos).

I noticed this spring that 'Audubon' has a really lovely pink rim, starts more coral but fades pretty nearly to a true pink, but it's just a "trim" color. Van Engelen has Audubon... according to my hot-off-the-presses price list, it would be $6.15 for 5 bulbs (if we order 50). http://www.vanengelen.com/flower-bulbs-index/narcissi/large-cupped/narcissus-audubon.html (We're not "officially" adding VE to the list at the moment, but we might end up getting a couple of things from there)

If you see something you like on the ADR site or mentioned in a post, I think the best way to follow any discussion about it is to use the "find" function in the browser... just search for the name.

It'll get less confusing as we go along, I think. We'll have time between ordering phases to catch up and get ready for the next round. This isn't your one & only chance to figure out your ADR order, but this may be the only time we order from B&B for this group buy.

If we don't get to 25 bulbs of something you want from B&B, let me know if you still want the bulbs at the 5-bulb price. (You'll still save a little on shipping.)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I don't see my amaryllis wish list up top, so I'm repeating it here:

Amaryllis wish list:

1 Flamenco Queen
1 Misty
1 Double Dream

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, it looks like my order for Iris Dyt is also missing from the list at the top.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I should have 25 for each of the Iris, and an additional 50 for the Harmony.

The only pink ones that jump out at me from the list is Precocious. I'll take 5.

Cheers! Oh wait, it's too early for that.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

whups, sorry about that SSG... You've got them. Happy, you'll get 25 if we get the numbers for ordering a second bag.

Thanks for letting me know when I miss something!!

Terp, I'll put you down for 75 Harmony total, then, and 5 Precocious (LMK if you want them at "full price" if we don't get enough interest today -- discount will about cancel shipping). So far I'm ordering 2 bags of Harmony, and you have 25 from each bag... I think it's likely that we'll get another bag before it's all over, so you will probably get your 75.

TIPS for ordering

Please put the names and numbers of what you want in a separate line. When it's in a sentence, it's too easy for me to miss.

Also, it helps if you tell me if and how many extras you'd take if necessary to place the order, especially with B&B today.

The other thing with B&B daffs is to let me know if you would still want them at the price per 5 bulbs (shipping should still work out to be free or nearly, depending on just how they do the discounts, but the per bulb price is higher than if we get to 25 or 50)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Paul, it's 5:00 somewhere...

I was looking at the B&B catalog and saw a few items that I've not seen elsewhere - was wondering if there could be interest in these. I realize we are coming up against the deadline. Jill, I'll put my bid in for multiples of the smallest quantity listed, and if other interest to reach the larger quantity price break, great. If not, could you put in an order with just my requests or is that too much trouble?

Iris reticulate 'Pauline' - violet standards and rich, dark purple falls with a pristine white blotch; no blue or yellow on this one (10/$4.30, 50/$18.50, 100/$33.00) - starting off with 20 for me

Woodland hyacinths - two colors a little bit different from the standard purple 'Excelsior' seen in most catalogs:
hispanica ''Queen of Pinks' - large soft lavender pink (10/$7.80, 50/$33.50, 100/$60.00) - starting off with 20 for me
hispanica 'City of Haarlem' - pale blush violet, which is a new shade in this group (10/$5.80, 50/$25.00, 100/$45.00) - starting off with 20 for me

Trout Lily - love this
dens-canis - variable; rose pink to purple and sometimes white with a pale yellow or brownish base; white anthers and mottled leaves (5/$9.65, 25/$41.00, 50/$74.00) - starting off with 10 for me
dens-canis 'Rose Queen' - deep pink flowers (5/$16.55, 25/$70.50, 50/$127.00) - starting off with 5 for me

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm ok with whatever, and I'll order some of what Terri just asked about -- I'll order the same quantities as she did.
