spearmint gone wild

Belleair, FL(Zone 10a)

When I planted my garden I put 2 small spearmint plants right smack in the middle. I didn't put them in pots or containers just stuck them right in the ground. Now I realize this was bad. It is spreading like fire. I'm afraid it will strangle my other plants bcuz its growing up & sideways. I like to use it 4 teas & salads so would like to keep some, but how do I do that w/out putting everything else at risk? Do I dig it up & replant it elsewhere? Can I do that? Or trim it?

It pulls up pretty easily. Pull up and toss it, dry or freeze it for use. Replant a bit in a large pot. Mine is going strong in pot for years - not requiring much care. I do still pull some each year from ground around the pot. Escape artist.

Agree with rosie--it WILL take your garden hostage until you take it out (and maybe even after).

Yay, hoorray! There's a fund, I believe, for that. It might be someone or it might be the Angel Fund or something. Whichever, it's wonderful~~welcome!

Thank u! That is so awesome. I know its sad but as a single mom with 2 teenagers (1 who's leaving for college in 2 months) money is really tight & even $5 is sometimes hard to come by. So this is so awesome. I started the garden to cut down on my grocery bill so being able to access everything is so helpful!! Thanks again for all ur help.

Wow, I'm a single mom with 2 teenagers also, one graduating HS in 2 weeks. Man can they eat. Thank goodness they like veggies, they grew up on them. Glad you became a member, I hope you enjoy it. Please let us know, see you on the other forums.

Welcome to DG! You're gonna love it.

Single mom of 3! And my mint keeps getting sunburnt or eaten (by bugs and family) but it IS an invasive little bugger. I keep mine in pots, and in our zone, it wants afternoon shade.

Another winner this year with my kids is a wax bean called Dragon Tongue. It grows fast, even in my silty mess of soil, and they look so pretty. I steam them in the microwave for 2 minutes, butter and Parmesan. Done!

Yum!

How do I find these different kinds of each veggie? I'm growing 3 different kind of beans but I only know 1 is a wax bean, the other is a string bean, & 1 is something the seed bag called a garden bean. I bought all my seeds at Walmart. Should I buy them somewhere else? Is it better to get these certain kinds of each of the veggies that people mention (like the dragon kind you mentioned)? What is the difference between the 1 I got & the other kind u mention?

If you go on the seed trading forum, they've got tons of ideas. I get my seeds from either swaps, or WalMart, or Baker Creek for the more unusual varieties. They're a little more expensive, but I've learned a lot about heirloom veggies just from reading their catalog. It helps, too, with finding seeds that grow well in the deep South - I've had success with some of their Thai and Indian varieties of veggies, where the regular seeds might go south.

There's also free seeds for newbies, I forget which forum they're in, but a lovely member of DG named risingcreek helped me with some southern-friendly seeds!

Awesome. I'll check it out. Thanks!

This may be a chat thread, but it is very active and they can surely redirect you.

This next one might be the "offical" request thread, but it is not as busy:

The regional forums, like this "Florida" forum, are only for subscribers, but it looks like you ARE a subscriuber.
So you could ask there, or scan the old thread titles for crop adivce.

I tried searching the Florida forum for "beans", but most of the threads that came up were chat threads. Of course, fin ding out OTHER people's favorites mgiht not help find YOUR favorites. But they can suggest what is easier to grow, or harder.

Thanks, Rick - surely those are better places to explore.
