Ahh Diana - I'm glad you're happy with your PB 'shrub'. I had larger ones but they were much too cumbersome for a 3 hr car ride. Mine is a fertile mama - so anyone's that doesn't make it...just let me know. If not this year certainly next year there will be more. As for growing conditions - she's not very particular. I probably amended our lovely clay soil a bit just so she's acclimate to it but I don't remember doing anything special. She did require staking and watering the first and I think 2nd summer - then she just went nuts LOL. Mike aka mqiq77 had told me to wait till the 'sap was rising' before I pruned her when I asked him about it. Course I responded with 'what is sap rising.' Sure he got a giggle out of that but patiently explained what amounts to early-mid spring when the plants are first waking up. ^_^ He said it was a Southern expression. LOL So that's what I did this year as she was monopolizing the back corner of my townhouse (read - small) yard. I've got her in an area that gets sum just about all day. And thank you for the Hummer tidbit. I knew she attracted the flutterflies but didn't know about the hummers. You'll love her evening scent - so soft...yet as I said wafts. You'll have to ask the others...but to my nose it's almost a soft lily scent.

Button, if your unknown watery tuber looks a bit like a banana, then it's a lotus. :-) 'Pink Pretty Princess Peyton' just multiplies like anything for me (at least for the last 2 years) and does great in a 22 inch water garden pot. It's the one pictured in the article.

HEAR YE HEAR YE!

The 2013 Fall Bulb Group Buy is now officially underway! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1314389/#new

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jan, I see you may be going to the fall swap in Frederick, do you think you could be our "bulb angel"? I don't think we can make the trip, but we could maybe make it to your place to pick up... just a thought. Let me know what you think. Frederick is just too far for us I think. Wish it were closer. It looks like fun. And, who knows, maybe we could be "bulb angels" for those further north in NJ if you didn't mind picking up for us. I think bulbs are more manageable in volume than pots of plants lol Although, I've heard you guys chatting about some huge bulbs!!

Critter, you are a busy lady!!!

Chantell, can't wait to sniff the scent of your PB shrub. Maybe I'll find a spot for it today. Yesterday was a bust for planting, just too darn chilly and rainy to do much of anything. At least today looks like it will be dry. Almost feels like an autumn morning

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

You will love the tulip Darwin hybrid ‘Gudoshnik!!!!! Last year I planted 215 tulips, Gudoshnik was among them.

Chantelle--
Mike (mqiq77) is a Sweetheart--isn't he?

I bugged him to death when I was having issues with my camellia. For a couple years--he was my
"Guiding Light" as to what to do. Then--he told me to cut the whole thing back to nubs.
He so loved my "Bob Hope" Camellia, I sent him a box-full of cuttings--which he cut in half and rooted
about 28 of them. Told me I had made him the "happiest man in the World"....

I need to write him again and and see how they are all doing...also--show him how mine is doing
after the complete cut-back--almost to the ground (4 years ago) due to some sort of leaf-Fungus.
I do not know what I would have done without his guidance,,,,

(this post has nothing to do with our recent Swap---so--forgive me...)...

1--The problem--May 2009
2--The big surgery--June 2010
3--Healthy re-growing new shoots--April, 2011
4--Almost back to normal--April, 2012
5--May--2013

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

amazing the progress of healing

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Pffftttt, I almost had a mouthful of coffee, one wish. Busy time indeed!!!

Of course, wind, be glad to be the 'bulb angel'. Road trip. As long as it is under 3 hours!! Heehee.

Newark, DE

Hi all,

First of all I must say being at the plant swap was a blast. Obviously it was my first one, but I had fun and came home with so many plants!! Thanks to all who gave them to me. They are very much appreciated!

Unfortunately, I have been tied up with my Dad's needs and family health issues (which are many) all week long. Between that and the rain, I hate to admit it, but I haven't transplanted anything yet. I have watered them on the hot (rather nasty) days we had and moved them from my porch to under the huge maple tree. All have survived and are actually flourishing. Today is cooler and unless I get a call from someone needing something, I plan to head to Lowe's for supplies shortly so I can get started.

Several of you gave away plants that I have forgotten what are, what there requirements will be etc. I will post pics with questions and hope I can find out the info. But to everyone - thank you. You made this "garden newbie" happy.

Jan - thank you so much for everything! Your yard is amazing, the kitchen island made me jealous and hosting us all was a wonderful gift, so thank you for reaching out to me and inviting me to attend. Without you, I wouldn't even be in the forum. A BIG thank you for that!! ^_^

Jill - I was so sorry to read of your friend's loss. It is never easy, especially a child. Prayers said for all.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I've been busy with family affairs also, but have finally had a chance to try to organize my new prized possessions.

It's like being a kid in a candy shop when I look at the tables in the garage where I have all the lovelies potted up, ready and waiting for their new homes!!

I'm with "lovetopaint" when it comes to identifying plants without labels. I will post all my NOIDs when I get them organized. I tried to match them against my "wants" by there were so many added donations that I'm not getting anywhere.

I know that Jen puts newspaper under her pots, so I'm thinking that I have found the heliopsis that I asked her for!! I also gave Wind's Celosia Flamingo Feather a great spot in the center of one of my larger pots.

Gita's Four O'clocks will be a welcome addition to a space that really needs filling out. Coleup's Twister Lipstick plant has already drawn attention and praise from my visitors.

Just put the Pulmonaria from Coleouslover, and the Lamium from Nutsfordaylily in the last empty spaces in my small shade garden.

Critter's Jasmine has a special place where it will stay indoors and protected forever.

Holly's Bamboo will be used as tripod's (similar to the one that Jan had holding up her beautiful Honeysuckle) for my new Clematis, Honeysuckle and Passifloras.

SSgardeners Rose of Sharon will be added to the row of the ones that I already have.

I'm worried that I will need to give the beautiful JM that Terp gave to me.
My godchild is pestering me that she wants this for her birthday gift!!!

I'll take pics and update more when I have a chance to go thru everything.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Er, I didn't bring Jasmine... was it from Chantell?

I'm trying to root some Jasmine steph. for the fall swap -- it's hardy! (I figured I'd try to bring you a rooted one in fall, Roses, rather than bringing you cuttings at the swap)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Woohoo, glad to see you lovetopaint!!!!! Glad you liked the island, cuz I really do!!! Thankful for Jeff who seemingly can do anything, except for laundry. Heehee. I am definitely NOT complaining.

I still have many to plant as well. Again, thank you all for the loverly day!!!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I have everything planted except for the coleus, and I'm running out of pots!

Do you ever plant coleus in the ground? Do they do okay with minimal watering if they're in well-amended soil?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I didn't see a name on the Jasmine. If they were from Chantell, thank you VERY much!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

the tulips are gorgeous Pixie!! We don't have many. I loved Greenland that I got years ago and still have a few here and there, but that's about it.

Jan, did you think I meant for you to drive the bulbs to us? goodness no. I wasn't thinking that. I was thinking that we could drive back down to your neck of the woods to pick up if you didn't mind bringing them home to your place. Salem was not too far for us.

went to a garden center today and got a car load of season must haves. blew Harry's mind since we have so many swap plants waiting to be planted lol

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Rainy here yesterday and today. Peeked in the herb bed and the Golden Thyme from Critter is just glowing! What a great addition to my garden.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Woohoo!! Heehee, I knew what you meant, Wind. I would be happy to bethepickerupper!!

Those must haves are very tricky about jumping into or onto carts to be taken home from the garden centers. Harry should know that by now.

Yay, AYC!!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Must have...plenty of Charcoal for grilling this weekend....Right???

HD has the 20lb, Kingsford bags-------2 for $9.88.
Only get these deals on big Holidays...

I work tomorrow in garden--will see what else is on special--not that I need anything...

Put a small dent in planting some stuff today. The prep always takes way too long....
Too tired now--been at it all day... Gita

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gee Allison what could you possibly be doing in the Fall that would keep you from planting a couple of hundred bulbs. LOL
Lovestopaint so glad to have you with us. You will love it here.
I have been getting some of my plants in the ground but there are quite a few still in their pots all doing just great. This cold rainy weather has held me up, too.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ooohhhh just sitting around toasting marshmallows.. LOL

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Roses - I'm not sure about the jasmine. Devon had asked for a cutting of the Jasmine officinale which is hardy here but she was the only one. I had pots of a tender NOID Jasmine Sambac but those were simply extras I'd bought in case someone wanted them. I was asking for what I paid for them. Devon and someone else pike took one each of those. Which I could help you on that.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks anyway, Chantell. I'm happy that it found its way to me!

Mount Laurel, NJ

HI ssgardener. I plant coleus in the ground all over the yard. They do want to be watered well however, just as when they are in the pots. So far this year however, it has been too cold here to put them outside. I thought we were almost ready and had them all acclimatized on the porch then this cold snap came. Maybe next week I'll be able to plant them. There pictures are from last year.

SS gardener, Yes coleus can be planted in the ground. See here for some examples..
http://www.rosydawngardens.com/Customer_Gallery.aspx

Coleus don't like wet feet and like impatiens , will let you know when they need water because they will droop. I let mine dry a little bit rather than keep consistently moist especially as they get bigger. Try to keep the leaves as dry as possible by watering around the base of the plant rather than sprinkling from above. For me, watering in the morning works best. Pinch back their growing tips a time or two to make them branch out and be fuller. The pinchings will root easily when stuck in moist potting soil now that temps are above 50 at night. Be sure to pinch out any flower buds that form at the tips.

Have fun!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Beautiful Coleuslover! We cross posted but I thought you did put yours in ground. Yep, my babies are shivering too and have enjoyed the times I've put them in the back of my van for protection and the heat build up in there. Thanks for sharing last years pics. Will look forward to this years array!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey Ric

Guess what happened yesterday? I was at my Sams Club and someone was 'returning' the Acanthus' Summer Beauty' she bought. So, I bought it! Not as nice as the one I scored for Happy, but it does have a bloom stalk on it. Should I put a reserved sticker on it for you and Holly for when we meet again?

LMK

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

the coleus looks so nice in a border. I've mostly kept ours in porch pots, but those pics are sure a great inspiration to plant some in the ground as well. our poor coleus babies stayed out in this chilly weather; some were already planted in outside pots too. I just didn't lug any bag in, but I did take in Coleup's twister plant, a huge fuchsia and all our basil. I was glad we hadn't planted out the basil seedlings yet.

going out now to plant pixies blue paradise phlox and black barlow columbine. thanks pixie!

onewish, I'm still trying to find a sunny spot for the pink pussy willow. thanks for such a hardy pot full

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Wind, thanks for mentioning the lipstick plant Twister. Most of you got rooted divisions of the monster mother plant, but the soil is MG Moisture Controll soil which is not the best for this plant which needs drier better drainage soil , a coarser mix. Please repot when you can. Thanks.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

enjoy it Wind.. every year when we trim I have a garbage can full of soil that I grew potatoes in a couple years ago.. we just stick the branches in there and they take care of themselves.. one of the easiest things I can do!!

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

I got everything planted yesterday, mostly in containers. Enjoyed every minute of it and really enjoyed a beer after I was finished! Was looking around this morning and saw that I have not put together the bicycle planter me sister gave me so now I need more flowers. May have to head back to Home Depot for a couple more of their $4.88 hanging baskets and take them apart.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

haha, planted em all and ran out, needed more...love it!
I bet we all struggle with that!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Roses, it's not impossible that I found a pot of Jasmine stephensis from last summer & tossed it in for you at the last minute... but if so, it would be marked on the pot (probably in silver sharpie LOL).

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Robin---

I bought 3 of the $4.88 HB's today. WHAT A BARGAIN!!!!
One was the beautiful, wavy-edged Coleus asst. The other two were the mixed Zinnias.
Don't ask me WHY I bought them--but i could not resist....7 plants in each HB. Wowsa!

You could pull apart and plant in beds.....Will see tomorrow if they got a refill of these.
The Zinnias sold out in a flash. I had stashed two.....:o>
Love, Love the coleus.....look for them if you go shopping to HD. They are worth it.

I am sitting here soaking my sore feet....I can hardly walk! So sore! "Burning" on the bottoms...
Need to find the better shoes to be on my feet all day long...if there is such a shoe....;-

There were a lot of Black Eyed Susan vines and double red MG's. for sale.
Already in small trellises in 1gal. pots.... Maybe $14.98 ??

AND--don't forget the two-20lb. bags of Kingsford Charcoal (bundled) for $9.88!!!!
STEAK TIME!!!!!!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Lotus!!!! Ohhhhhh, Jill, thanks for sharing them & Holly, thanks for picking them up. Now all I have to do is repot them from potting soil to regular dirt so I can put them in the pond. It's been a whole lot of years since I had Lotus. Planted 15 diff. kinds of seeds today. brought the plants back outside, planted a few from the swap , dug around in the potting shed and found some pretty flower pots, did a little weeding and I'm shot & ready to hit the shower. BTW, the Perry Co. Master gardener plant sale turned out sweet! I got there around 11:00 am & they had just reduced them to two-fer the price of one, so I doubled up on them, stopped over at DD's house and gave her half of them, and in return, she let me dig up a couple of her extras & she let me take a couple cuttings of a very pretty sedum she had, so it worked out for all. What a wonderful weekend so far, if you disregard the cold wind.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yup -- regular garden dirt is great for lotuses. They even like our clay. I fill my containers by re-digging the edges of beds, picking up the chunks of clay to toss in and putting any grassy bits at the bottom of the pot. As well as they do in my 22 inch containers, they're going to love your pond! Aspen-Terri's friend Cheryl dropped by today and picked up the lotus I'd put aside for her, and that might be the last of the extras... until next year! 'Pink Pretty Princess Peyton' just multiplies like a fiend for me. :-)

Newark, DE

I am so happy to hear I am not the only one with plants still in the pots from the swap. I thought it was just me. I was out all day yesterday working on flowers too. “Flowers are a lot of work” is putting it lightly. I have learned a couple things in the process.

Digging sucks more than it ever did and it sucks worse when it’s the ground and not in pots. I'm thinking it's the ground that gets harder as I get older and not my herniated discs and arthritis causing problems. I think after I get these in the ground, more gardening will be in raised beds, or containers. I sat on the ground most of the time, except for shoveling the crappy dirt out and taking it elsewhere. I think I need to add a garden stool buggy to my list too. I like this one. They have a store close by and often publish 20% off coupons. I like sales, but I like sales with coupons even better. LOL

http://www.harborfreight.com/rolling-work-seat-with-tool-tray-91495.html

I found out why everything I have planted in front of my porch for years dies – I bought some garden soil (dirt + manure I think from the "wonderful" smell .....I had a good laugh to myself over that. I used to live on a farm many, many moons ago, so I am trying to decide if this is cow poop of horse poop.....I know it's not acrid enough to be chicken poop. It's more mellow. I have decided it's horse poop, but the mental workout and trying to recall the odor differences in cow vs. horse passed a good 30 minutes of work) to mix into the crappy soil I have, to make it more conducive to growing. I dug up two roots and millions if not billions of feeder offshoot roots that made an almost solid root blanket from the maple tree. That’s all gone after several hours work and now the soil is mixed so it should grow something. That part was not fun at all. I am going to dig on the side of the porch today I hope I don’t find more of that!

When I was out running errands and got stuff to work with the plants at Lowe’s, I bought a Rosemary plant to use in cooking. I was given an oregano plant last week at the swap. I can't rememeber who it was but thank you! They are in pots so I can bring them in this winter and were much easier to plant too. LOL Oh and I bought an English Lavender because I love the smell, dried they make nice “dream pillows” and they are also good in cookies. Obviously it’s in a pot to bring inside too. I also bought a cherry tomato plant which is in a pot and a one season thing. And I found a sad, lonely, badly wilted hydrangea that was marked down. I bought it. My grandmother always had them and I love them. This one isn’t the lovely blue one, but white. It's still should be pretty if I can save it. It has perked up some with water and sun. I haven’t transplanted it yet because I was hoping it would bounce back a little before it gets moved. It's over 3 feet tall and has several blloms starting too. So for $3 I thought I'd try. I don’t know how much more I will get done today, we’ll see. I want done before the men come to cut down some trees and tree branches, Thursday and maybe Friday if needed. If I don’t get it done today, I have tomorrow. Wednesday I have to take Dave to get x-rays for his surgeon’s visit next week to see how the bone is fusing in his spine. But afterward, I could have some time to work more . I guess it’ll depend on what I find under the surface and what I can get done…. Then on one of these days I need to mow and trim. A lot of work ladies...but I do a little and quit and just keep imagining sitting down with a cold glass of something and enjoying the view AFTER the work. LOL

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

totally insane...trying to weed and plant out Nisi's tomatoes and got ordered in the house by the police >>>there is a BEAR IN OUR YARD!! I had no idea the news had been reporting that a bear was spotted in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Our certified habitat for wildlife just took on a whole new meaning!!!!!!! funny thing is I did hear a strange sound behind our yew bush this am while weeding next to the garden and just thought it was turkeys... maybe it was the bear =0 eeeegads .... I hope they don't kill it when they finally catch it

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

lovetopaint, make sure you take a break with a cold glass of something and enjoy the view... even when the work isn't done yet! Hope your new plants flourish. I love lavender!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Careful of that bear Diana!! I've been trying to put a plant in the ground every time I pull out a clump of weeds. We have lots of clay soil, but the weeds seem to break up the soil somewhat, so I use that spot to dig around a little more and then put in a plant. My gardens are just stuffed with stuff without a great deal of planning. Wherever there's room for the plant becomes the plant's new home.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Egads, wind!!!

Ran in to a mat of roots also, lovetopaint. Then I sharpened my shovel a bit. I need to do that more. Who knew? I sooo wish I had paid more attention to my dad and how he did things. But, I got the earl's gold azalea planted. Then out front to finish up the bed I had totally dug out and replanted with some goodies pre swap. I added a beautiful 'charisma' rose. Hope it likes its new home. Then I placed some rocks to help hold soil and then a layer of newspapers and then mulch. Theacrossthestreetneighborsarethankingme
It has improved their view.

RRR, I'm like that, too. Find a spot and fill it. More often than not, I like the happy accidental combos.
