Nisi, Harry will like that one lol. We still don't have all your tomatoes in the ground yet. Wish we did with this heat wave upon us. Harry planted a lot of cannas today and a few dahlias bordering the garden. I still need to find a place for Gitas red leaf canna

....and no stun gun for Boo bear. the protocol is to coexist with the bear! I have no problem w/that, but I feel for his safety. I don't think our area it is going to be very bear friendly because we've never had a bear around here and it is so congested and developed. Not exactly deep woods or forest areas anywhere close. I'm not sure where he wandered to today. Yesterday he was across rt 38 at Strawbridge Lake.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Wind, I have a mental image of Boo bear swinging in a hammock somewhere....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Don't they usually transport them to NW NJ?

Newark, DE

Happy - you wouldn't believe some of the places I been and the things I've done. I've been told by several people I should write a book. LOL

Wind I sure hope Boo Bear stays safe!! Bears are one of my spirit guide animals.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Apparently the bear has traveled throughout the night or there is another one in the local neighboring township of Delran, NJ

So, Lovestopaint, or anyone...What does it mean or signify when a bear shows up out of the blue in one's life or community?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes Nisi, that's what I remember. I lived one block from Columbus Park, all the row houses had walkways/ paths between the backyards and no one locked their back door in the 70s. Nonna's walked their checks to the bank every month, 'cause the "Burg" was safe, too many Italian Stallions and Good Fella's not to be. LOL There was a family bar/restaurant on nearly ever block, each with their own special. Had lunch more than once at the Hudson Beer Garden, with guys like Joe Marino and Phil Zito at the next table.

It means they're looking for food

The Bear is known for his wisdom. He is a creature of dreams and visions, mystics, visionaries and shamans. With him he brings strength, healing, introspection through solitude and reverance. He is a symbol of change or transformation, a communicator with The Great Spirit.

Put more succinctly than I could do, this is from a good website on animal totems. It is concise and true-

The Bear

Bear is the epitome of the protective mother. She represents your hidden strength. Bear says to look inward in order to know ones self. Her medicine awakens the power of the unconscious. Bear’s cycle of power is the spring and summer.

Bears are considered to be a highly desired ally and spirit helper because of its fearless power. It is believed that the power of Great spirit lives though the bear. The bear holds the teachings of introspection. When it shows up in your life pay attention to how you think, act and interact. Use discernment in all that you do and discriminate with care. Bear teaches you how to make choices from
a position of power. In some traditions bear is the spirit keeper of the West. The place of maturity and good harvest. The gifts that bear offers to those with this totem are strength, introspection and knowledge. Bear teaches the importance of appearance by gathering inner strength and presenting it outwardly.

Unlike other animals who are active during a specific time of day, the bear is active both day and night. This symbolizes its connection with solar energy, that of strength and power, and lunar energy, that of intuition. It enhances and teaches those with this totem how to develop both within themselves.

Bear can sometimes be too quick to anger and too sure of it own power. While they have little to fear they can forget caution, which is an important trait to have. If bear is your totem be careful that you don't throw your caution to the wind. Being unaware of your limits in certain settings can be disastrous

BTW, if anyone wants a Spiraea "Little Princess" or a Hypericum shrub (I think it is a Hidcote) or a Spiraea Anthony Waterer or a Slender Deutzia or a Vitex, let me know and I'll try to propagate before the next swap.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Deutzia, please!

For anybody who might not be following the fall bulb order thread... we have a date for our sorting party, Saturday October 12. Also, we're adding a quick little order of special daffodils from Brent & Becky's, since their pre-season discount of 10% is like free shipping. The summary list of varieties, prices, and quantities available is in this post: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9532832

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

You've got it!

(Zone 7a)

new thread for slow dial-uppers? thankx

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Going to continue here! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1315579/

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

bluespiral!!!!! how nice to see you posting!!!!

(Zone 7a)

Nice to "see" you too Happy - still stuck in Lurk-ville - not sure my slow dial-up will let me see any responses here - nice of Critter to do the bulb coop but the voles and mice have been so well-mannered / (well-predator-ed?) that I'm sitting this one out :)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

We are completely overrun with chipmunks ourselves. The eat all the birdseed that falls to the ground -- and there is a lot.

Maybe Flowajen can start a new thread -- we are at almost 300. No wonder your dial-up is struggling!

never mind

*gasp* no bulbs, Bluespiral?? not even a few of those luscious smelling doubles & bunch-flowering daffs? Wow. Well, I managed to do it last year... I'd gone so overboard with plant purchases earlier in the year that I said, "no bulbs for me this year." That was a first, but I stuck to it!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Happy your running Tiarella.. is a running!!.. just beautiful.. the hardy begonia only has one tiny little leaf poking up.. is that normal.. or just not happy here?

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Well Sad news, the Lotus tubers turned out to be EE's: Lovely purple stemmed omes. The Good News is that I LIKE them so thanks (Coleup?) and they are in the pond. I managed to get a few of the plants in the ground and will be planting more weather & my shoulder permitting. I forgot who gave me the grape vine and the name of it, but it is vining. Do we put it on a grape arbor now? I now have wood frogs, tree frogs & bull frogs courting and cavorting in the pond. Their music fills my ears every night, especially after a good rain. Will start taking pix & posting here. Button.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

The grape was from me - it is Gewürztraminer, which is a wine grape. I think it would be good to start training it as soon as you can. It runs wild at my house, sprawls all over, makes babies where ever it touches the ground and tries to set two crops of grapes a year.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

little by little, all our swap plants are getting planted =) I can't wait to see the caladiums. We got the bag from the prize table; plus, I planted Critter's Little Miss Muffet.

This morning I'm glad to see we are not getting serious rain, hail, or even derecho conditions here yet... dreading driving south to Vineland later that may get it worse. The derecho they got last year was horrible, fallen trees everywhere...

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

My daughter in Kinnelon, NJ had a derecho run thru her area. It went straight up her mountain road and took down all the telephone poles, signs, trees and shrubs in its path!! What a strange and devastating site it was.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yes, little by little. I still think the little plants are multiplying overnight, cuz the pile seems to get bigger.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

onewish -- how is the hardy begonia coming? Is there anyone who is going to Sally's Thursday "event" who you could get to? I'd be happy to dig up a bunch more for you if there is anyway to get them to you.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I have 2 nice patches of this--lots of BIG leaves and, of course
the tiny ones that always pop up here and there.

It is amazing--how it completely disappears in the winter--and then--ALL this comes up.
But then--to me--all garden plants are amazing...

G.

Here are my 2 patches today. The 2nd pic. is of the patch by the shed--kind of buried among lots of other stuff...

Yankeecat, I should have looked it up before requesting that grapevine from you. It produces grapes that make a white vine which we don't drink so I took it along and put it on the plant raffle table at our hobby greenhouse club picnic and good ole Ric of MAF got it so it is still in the DG family. And it was growing like a weed when I took it along to the picnic. Besides, Bobbin wasn't going to make a trellis for it anyway, so I thankfully got it a new family. I have planted some of the plants I got from the swap in absentia and all, including the ones still in pots, have had fertilizer added plus I make sure they get adequate water. At least I am able to plant a few here & there.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I grows like a weed at my house, too. I'm going to try to make grape jelly out of the grapes because I don't make wine.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Well we were very pleased to get it I have wanted a grape vine for a long time.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I have a lot more of them if you want more. It just keeps making babies all over the place!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Bobbin & I planted the Irises I had loeft over from LAST YEAR'S SWAP. They have been growing in pots for over a year now. The rest of the plants get put in tomorrow morning & then I am done.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

The Moneymaker tomato I got at the swap has baby toms set! First of all the tomatoes to set.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

We pulled 99% of the Lysimachia in front of the house out because it had gotten invasive & was crowding out the pretty daylilies & Iris there, and I planted 99% of the plants from the swap. Looks much better. Will take a pix & post later. Button.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow -- two months ago Critter gave me some fig cuttings, and I rolled them in newspapers and put them in plastic bags per Wind's link above -- http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=9526027 .
I checked them about a month ago, and nothing. Today I was about to pitch them because there was still no sign of activity at the base of the cuttings, where the new roots were supposed to appear, and I was tired of looking at them (they've been sitting on the kitchen counter all this time). But lo and behold, roots are there on two of the five cuttings, just not where they are supposed to be (that is, the roots are coming out mid-cutting rather than at the base), and there are signs of new growth.

I potted them up -- I'm a little dubious that they'll transition from the dark womb they were in for the last 2 months, but you never know. Stay tuned.

Oh I just tossed mine a month ago as there were no signs of roots and I was cleaning up the drive way in preparation of the new arbor and brick work.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Trust me, you could have knocked me over with one of your bricks~
