Chat and Swap thread Part 3 for The RU at Jan23 on May 18

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gita may I have one of those 4'Oclock please?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Absolutely, Pixie---How about more than ONE? I have so many!
You could indoctrinate some friends to this beautiful plant....

Something different......Gita

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will take as many as you don't want Gita.. just love them.. and they never reseed for me

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

You got it, Terp!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Pixie---

Maybe you have had different 4's. The seeds on these are the size of a pea--and, if you do not remove them,
they just roll off the plant and fall to the earth below. There they will germinate the next Spring.
They look just like Morning Glories when first sprouting----but when the true leaves come--they are
pointed--not at all like a MG.'s.

Will give you a bunch.....Gita

that was me that posted they didn't reseed for me Gita.. and they were the broken colors.. I planted them the first 4 years after we bought the house.. never reseeded once.. even though I hoped they would .. I collected some seeds to sow inside & used to leave more than half of them out there.. and not once was I lucky enough to have them reseed.. I haven't planted them in a few years now

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

WOW-- That seems hard to believe!

Did you put some Crab Grass Pre-Emergent on your lawn?
That would keep ANY seeds from germinating. Mine used to come up in the grass
near the bed where the 4's were growing....

SO! How many would YOU like to have??? Gita

Would like some more requests for the Chrysanthemun pacificums.
I do have a lot of them potted. Also the NOID Mints.

Just keep checking my "haves" list--I put the date at the top of my list whenever I update it.
That way you know something "new" was added....

With all these things left over--i will make a bunch of people happy at work....
Gita

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

no.. I have crab grass everywhere.. LOL.. I always wait to put any preem down until the self seeders start up.. I always wondered if the ball like seeds rolled off my slopes when the snow melted.. I will take whatever left overs you have.. have a nice big spot for them .. and I like to plant them between the iris plants along the driveway.. fills in the dead spots with no blooms in it

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Will work on that! Gita

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

*** For all of those who requested one of my Cannas--Robin---donner---and wind---
I have a question:

It is 3 weeks until the Swap. If I pot these Canna roots in a pot--they may not be up yet by 5/18. .
And--if they were--you would take them out of the pot and plant them in the beds...Right?
SO_ Should I even plant them?
I could put the Canna roots in a plastic bag (just the day before the Swap) or an empty pot and give them to you tat way.

Today--I worked through all the Canna roots- Cleaned them, trimmed off the old roots, put them in boxes and
covered them, partially, with soil. Then watered the whole thing and put them on top of my raised bed.
My goal here was to start to hydrate them a bit. Get them plumper and start sending out beginning shoots.
Kind of----wake them up...

Please tell me if you agree with this--or if you want me to pot them up.
Wind's massive red ones' roots are too big to pot up. Ree member--she brought them to the Swap in 2 buckets.

I almost lean towards potting them up--(except the red ones for Donner--i will see her soon)-- as it is still 3 weeks to go.

Speak up--honestly.....I will do either.... Thanks, Gita

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, either way is ok for me for the cannas and may I have 2 of the 4 o'clocks also? And a couple of the spider plants to use as fillers in my containers?

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Gita, save your pots...you don't have to go through the trouble of potting up ours. I haven't even opened up our dormant box of canna rhizomes and dahlia tubers yet!! We're still working on yard and garden clean up big time around here. thank you though. I may bring a box of more rhizomes too in case anyone else may want more.

I added a few Nandina to our haves list. I dug them up from our churches garden today when I was over there weeding this morning.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Wind--
That Canna of yours makes monster roots! I could not believe it! Does it have a name?

I took the last 2 pieces you had in the bucket last year. They were straight and fat.
Planted it--and by the end of summer, the red roots were above ground in a huge circle.

It was difficult to dig up that clump--it was so huge! never seen these before.

Here is the root of your Canna after i dug it up. That is a concrete bird-bath top it is in.....

Stay well, Gita

I somehow missed getting any Canna from Wind, so am officially asking for a couple if you have them Diana, please. Also, I would be interested in at least one Nandina which I really love. I have one from Gita probably the first or one of the very first swaps and have loved it all these years.

I have done a bit of walking around in the yarden to see what we will have to share. I still need to get in the front yard and see what is available before I list things. Yep, not very long at all now and I am getting super excited about the day. I love seeing and having the time to interact with you all and love the idea of having new goodies for the plant beds.

Will go and take a look at the haves and wants now. Hope that everyone is having a good Sunday. A bit of drizzling rain here this morning. Not sure what it is calling for. Had hoped to spend time outdoors today but that may have to wait.

I put a couple of gardening books up on my haves.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yankee Cat I would like to read that book on Garlic. Last fall a number of us planted several varieties of gourmet garlic from a local to me grower we call "garlic man'. This year I hear he will have 14 varieties to try. Maybe we will do another garlic tasting if someone volunteers for a Fall swap. We even have a thread for Garlic Lovers ongoing here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1278258/
Thanks for thinking of books. Judy (coleup)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Judy - It is really a fun read.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

***i will be adding 12 starts of Montauk Daisies to my "haves". Theu are in 2 cell packs.

These are still rooting in--but are NOT just cuttings. They all had a bit of root at the bottom
when they fell off the big clumps I dug up and moved at my daughter's. Looking good!

This Daisy is indestructable--disease-free--and really takes over, forming large clumps.
It blooms in mid-late fall with daisy-like flowers--just like Shastas.

***Will also have some Snapdragons (from seed) to share. The seed came from
"birder" and there are several kinds. All growing well. Finally getting some "substance" to them.
Need to, actually, count how many of what color/height I have.
Same for the Zinnias....

All this takes time---so trying to get things done....baby steps...baby steps.....:o)

Robin--I will ad your latest requests to my "Promised" list. Sorry i did not get back to you
right after you asked. it was 4 O'clocks and something else. I'm at work and can't check.
I have plenty of both. Gita

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

got your requests Ruby ^_^

Coleup: I'd love to try a cutting of your Lipstick plant 'Twister' if you can spare it. Looks like a fun plant. I imagine it is a houseplant. Do you put it outside in the summer? Ever notice it being attractive to hummingbirds? I actually heard our first hummer today on a fly-by over our garden!! I have had feeders out but hadn't seen any yet. I knew they were in our area. This is the first time I ever heard them first!! luv the hummers

happy_macomb, can I get a cutting of Slender Deutzia?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Pixie--

Would you have a picture of the Osteospermum daisy--"Fireburst"?
Did not find it on PF. I love this daisy--usually get the purple/blue for mixed planting.

I would like to see what it looks like--then will ask you for some.

Gita

SS--Could I have a pot-full of your Cactus mix?
I need to do better drainage on a potted Pineapple Lily.
Thanks....G.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

YES! I will take a couple--if you have enough. Are these the annual ones?
Thanks.

And--You can have as many of the 4's as you wish. You said just one?
If that IS all you want--OK, but i have plenty.

Gita

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Sure, Gita! I'm bringing a big bucket of the cactus soil, so please bring a container for it.

Bordentown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I just added the list of tomato varieties on my haves list, plus some other things. My daughter Katherine is going through the flowers she started and is making a list to offer.

In case you don't know, we start seedlings under lights and try to sell them at Columbus market every May. That's why there are so many kinds of tomato seedlings on our list. It's tough to do without a greenhouse; we have shop lights all over the place. But it's fun to share an activity with my grown daughter.

So, now I would like to request some things:

ssgardener

Self watering pots, if any are left

UMD_Terp

Columbines
Lilies of the Valley

Holly

Your famous sweet cream marigolds. (A person can never have too many marigolds.)
Columbine
Lily of the Valley
Bacopa White
Chocolate Mint

Roses

A mock orange cutting. My parents had one in our yard when I was growing up and I loved the smell (plus it would remind me of them). Is yours fragrant?

The last high scent sweet pea, if someone else didn't beat me to it

Gita (I have to remember that you pronounce your name with a hard "G", like in "green thumb")

Montauk daisies
Dark purple asters

(I had better hit "send" before I type any more)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Also, does anyone have any green, non-variegated vinca to share?

My sister's ajuga is dying off and she needs a ground cover to cover a hill where grass won't grow. I don't know if this would be vinca major or minor. What do you all recommend?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Pixie, Could I have some of those Osteospermum Scape Daisy Fireburst babies? I have some yellow Iris for you. Not sure what type they are but they aren't Bearded Iris. Sorry I don't have a picture of them.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

SSG, Yes I have some Vinca Minor. Short evergreen with blue flowers.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly, do you have any wood poppy left? I just did a horrible job of transplanting one that was getting crowded by a large hosta!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Oops, Holly we cross posted. Vinca minor would be great, thank you!

Nisi, I got you down for the self watering pots.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes I sure do have more Wood Poppy.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Nisi--

Will put you down for both---Now--you asked for --Montauk daisie(s) & Dark purple aster(s)
Are you asking for more than one--as there were "S's" on the end..?

If I have enough--I will gladly oblige--if not--then "ONE is the lonely number....."..
Those Asters sure are growing! Very pot-bound--I know that.
"Liberate them" asap. OK?

Now to go update my list......Gita

**********Just reminding everyone again--please delete the "This post has been edited">/b> from the
bottom of your haves/wants post every time you update...That way--there will only be ONE line at all times...*******
Please................:o)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

To everyone who received a Sedum Ogon from me last year...

It's not actually Ogon! I couldn't figure out why my Ogon looked and behaved so differently from Coleup's Ogon, until I realized I had mislabeled it. It's actually Sedum Limelight.

Does anyone have a small bit of Ogon to share? I'm now interested in planting them side by side.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gita YES! I'll take 4 of the 4o'clocks please.
Holly you got it!!

Bordentown, NJ(Zone 7a)

More requests:

FlowAJen

Rose Campion

Chantell

Scented geranium

Wind

1 flowering tobacco
And you asked previously if I wanted dark or red cherry tomato; I guess I'd like to try the dark

Bordentown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Quote from Gitagal :
Nisi--

Oh just one please!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Nisi, got your requests!! the seedlings are small, but I know you can nurse them along. I planted them a few weeks later than planned.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

***********In one of my beds--the Rose Campions went crazy dropping seeds.
Now I have a good 2' sq. area full of seedlings.

They are small--but 3 more weeks to go. I can dig some up and plant them in whatever....
IF anyone else wants these.
As the saying goes--"Once you have these--you will ALWAYS have these.....

*********OH--I also dug away 8 NICE new plants from my pot of Campanula Elizabeth.
Any takers??? LMK.
Gita

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

NisiNJ I would love to try Moneymaker and Cherokee Purple tomatoes and a San Marzano - if you have enough to spare.
