So that's why so many of my seeds don't germinate! Has anyone had experience with Seymours selected seeds?I ordered the new Crazy daisy from them, plus a few others.I bought a package of Mina Lobata seeds from Martha stewart.
I don't know what I got but it was some kind of monster vine that had no idea when to quit. It was on it's way to devouring my house when I yanked it down. Plus, it smelled BAD.
Thompson & Morgan's 2002 catalogue ?
Hi forgetmenot
I,ve used seymours for the last 4 years, in fact I,ve just planted out about a dozen plants of 'crazy daisy' that I grew this year, can,t wait for next summer to see them. The pics always look good, so sometimes it,s a bit of a disapointment when you see the plants for real in your own garden.
I like Seymours, and Select Seeds from Connecticutt: http://www.selectseeds.com they have wonderful old varieties.
I like to cut apart every seed/plant catalogue I get, and make my own. LOL I cut out pictures of everything I am growing and have them pasted on pages A-Z. One of these days I will get around to adding just where everything is planted. :) Just an idea for winter projects.
I just hate the high prices charged by seed companies.....however, I suspect that with the internet, and people trading seeds in these forums, they have lost a lot of business and have to charge more to stay afloat.
It is a constantly changing world....and what we do starts a chain reaction a lot of times.
It's hard to sell bread when your neighbor is giving it away:)

I would say that the percentage of people trading seeds is relatively small compared to the customer base of such large companies. Besides people have been trading seeds for many, many years, within groups, in ads or between friends. Indeed, the internet has made trading more widely available but there are many here who rarely, if ever, trade or will only trade certain items and buy others. Speaking as a serious collector there are few companies or people who have access to certain species and I often have to trawl through many channels to obtain the species I'm looking for. The internet has also opened such large companies to a worldwide audience and therefore a potentially much larger customer base.
Look at any seed trading forum on any given day and the majority who do trade tend to be pretty much the same group of people. Not a bad thing but just goes to show that the group is not huge compared to the amount of gardeners there are.
Charging 4.99 for 5 seeds of something unusual or rare is not a bad thing. What is very annoying is seeing the same seeds on sale for much less with other companies. T&M are not by any means a small seed merchants, and while they have a living to make they are not helping themselves by charging (in some cases) twice as much as other seed merchants and giving what is often a poor service.
Were they to charge a 4.99 for the same species but offer an excellent service, they would not be getting the poor press that they have received here. I for one would gladly pay extra for a good level of service.
Its not a case of the neighbour giving bread away, its a case of the competitor making sure the bread is cooked properly IMHO.
Peapod - I do the same (great minds think alike eh!!!)
Louisa, I knew there was some reason I love you!

I bought seeds of US native plants from a US based company while there last year. not one seed has germinated in the year and a half that they have been sown. I bought perennial helianthus and heleniums. I'll look in my seed box and tell you who it is.

no name on the packet. now thats handy!! it's a clear plastic zip lock envelope about 3 inches long x 1.5. it gives details like depth to plant, height, soil type, germination time ........ anyone know who it is?
