Chat and swap thread for The RU at Jan23's on May 18th

Donnerville - We'd love a couple of the Alpine Catchfly. Thanks.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Donner that last pic is just beautiful. What a nice combination of plants.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Quote from HollyAnnS :

Paul one of them might be purple but it would be lighter purple not a dark one. I will see if I can tell which is which.

Sounds good, no worries either way.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Pat, I will pot up some for you.

Holly, this plant self-seeds, but is not at all invasive. It pops up here and there in the garden. Quite fun. The pink and yellow combo in the photo wasn't really intentional. I put the foxglove (originally from David) and the false indigo together for a blue and light yellow combo, but the false indigo was done with blooming when the photo was taken. :-)

The Alphine Catchfly seeds originally came from Jill.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Pretty sure I have the Alphine Catchfly from last year I just have to find it in the garden. LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Joyanna has probably 30 Alpine catchfly seedlings in her fairy garden planter! (She had 2 plants in there last year; that's where she harvested the seed she was giving out at the swap.) We'll stick them into little pots and bring some to the swap.. I think she'll want to give some to her (younger) friends, also.

UMD_Terp, gotcha down for black mondo grass

Jill isn't it such fun watching the little ones with their plants? You would have thought we'd moved into Hershey - when Mariah spotted the Lemon balm coming up. She knows not to grab and eat w/o checking. So she snatches a few leaves and comes to me saying "Memee are these ok to eat?" So I said well lets look at the leaves and smell them. What do you think. She rubs the leaves - takes a whiff and says 'yup it's that lemon stuff that you said was ok to eat last year." LOL A few months back Chloe and I were at a store and she ran to look at the plants. Eyebrows knitted together - points to one and says 'what's this?" I said what's one way that we tell? She rubbed the 'leaves' (you can tell these are my kids, right?), closes her eyes and takes a sniffer....BIG grin and says "ohhh Memee it's rosemary!!' I just purchased Herb Fairies Book Club for the girls http://www.herbfairies.com/standby_pages/2831

HappyAre you interested in some Flowering Quince offshoots for your slopes?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm also looking for Kent Beauty ornamental oregano. Does anyone grow this?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

ssgardener -- great minds and all that -- I'm also on the hunt for Kent Beauty! I was hoping to find it at Green Springs....

Coleup -- I have maybe 3 Flowering Quince I've collected that I didn't know where to put, because of the sun (or lack thereof). I hadn't thought of putting it on my awful front hill -- maybe that is what I should do. If not, It'll have to stay in pots on the patio. Darn, I need to get to Costco before they sell out of big pots!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Happy, All of my Quince grow in shade of large trees and all of them bloom according to how much 'sun' they get. I think of them like bulbs that get their yearly dose of sunshine before the trees leaf out! I was thinking of your back slope because in my experience they grow more slowly and form less of a thicket than in more favorable situation. Mine do seem "tough as nails" More 'mass' than color.
Along those same lines I have clumps of 'ditch lilies' that reliably produce lush green foliage but no flowers in same shade. Originally they were 'place holders' until I found something better to put in their place. As a charter member of the Lazy Gardener Society , that was 30 years ago! The day lilies also hold their own with creeping 'invasive/thugs' like ivy , lamium, and vinca major.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

I currently have almost no idea what I will have to offer for the swap. The late spring has delayed my plants breaking dormancy, both those in pots and in the ground. Coleup - my Asclepias plants are especially slow this year. Many of the plants are just beginning to show any growth and quite a few are keeping me in suspense. I probably will not post "Haves" until near the end of the month. :-(

Paul---
Thanks---I will check with her--we D-mail a lot...

It is totally amazing how extensive and thick the roots are on the Pulmonaria!!! Like worms....
This was the other half of the one I dug up for you. There is still a nice little clump left....
I had a hard time digging it up. Many roots get sacrificed...
Gita

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita, yes I was the one who asked for your Pulmonaria. Thanks.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks--just a brain F--t.....Will ad it to my "Promised: list for you, Sally.

Paul----
You said somewhere that you wanted as many Bleeding Hearts as you could get.
There is a "carpet" of seedlings around mine--just coming up. They grow so fast.
My BH is from coleup--it is pink.

If you say "GO!"---I will pot up a slew of these for you. Colup could tell you how long it takes
from seed to bloom. I think she once said--three years. Yoooo----Hoooo Judy!!!!! is that right???

ssgardener, I noticed you're looking for the tall Joe-Pye weed. I have some pots of it, if you'd like one. I just love it.

I'm collecting information for the name badges that will be at the swap for you to pick up. All you need to do is type in the information in a space below the heading. If you make a mistake and can't fix it, just go down to the next space and start again. This is NOT a serious project, so please relax and have fun with it.

This is the link to the spreadsheet.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqWVfL80W6-pdDJyaldUVGUydkpZVUVrRGFnNWliLXc#gid=0

If you are not able to open the link, please let me know and I will walk you thru it. It's an easy spreadsheet and great tool to have. PS, I've been teaching Seniors in my neighborhood to use their computers even when they thought they'd be too stressed out to learn!! We start by turning it off and on for the first lesson

Critter, I'll dig you up a False Celandine poppy & Yellow bleeding heart & I lost the Kerria last year so if you have a small one to spare, I would appreciate it. Did you ever get up to Ashcombes? Terp, the bleeding heart is a bush.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Wind, got any more Flamingo Feather? If so, would appreciate one. Critter will go dig up your requests tonite & give them to holly.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Button! I've got a little Kerria that's blooming its 14" heart out this spring, looking for a home... it's yours. :-) Didn't get up to Ashcomb's, but I think there's a mini-swap happening at my place Sunday, partly to pick up caladiums and also to exchange a few larger plants.

Button -- I think you wanted a crooked willow cutting, figure I'll send a couple of fig cuttings back with Holly for you too... if there's anything else, please remind me!

Hi Button, I have more. I'll be glad to put aside some for you ^_^

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

What is it with Kerria? The one Critter gave me didn't make it either -- and I have tried several times in the past so it is now on my "tried 3 times, won't try again" list. But what is it looking for? Everyone tells me it is supposed to be EASY (shouting now).

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I got mine from Orchidfancy... a pretty big offshoot that had a chunk of roots attached. I didn't pot it up, didn't baby it, just planted it straight into the ground (amended the soil a little) and staked it upright. It did almost nothing for several years, and then -- boom! -- it morphed into a beautiful big shrub with spreading, drooping branches. It was in full bloom when we got back last weekend. It's worth trying until you succeed. I'll look to see if it has some good offshoots this year.

Mine is in part shade, at the edge of our little tree line. I did put a soaker hose right next to it, so it got watered twice a week in summer when there wasn't any rain, especially during its first 2 years.

Happy: WATER IT. rofl
