Chat and swap thread for The RU at Jan23's on May 18th

SS--

Is it this Rose of Sharon?

I have had seeds from this since 2010. That's when I bought these at Lowes--on the
markdown rack--and they were full of seed-heads. I got a lot of seeds from it...

It is possible you got them from my "stash" at a swap.... Gita

Sorry Wind, I don't have an ID on it.
Roses, Not me with the Deutzia, was it Happy?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses -- I'm happy to root more Deutzia for you -- but be forewarned -- after offering rooted cuttings, I realized this is not the best season to try to root it, since it is trying to bloom. Gita suggested cutting off the blossoms, but that is hard to do since they are hidden inside the leaves. It is funny how DG works -- a few years ago I had rotted pots and pots of it, but no one wanted it. Now this year it is popular, but I don't have any already rooted. I adore it. It is, however, very slow growing -- it would make a good show for at least 5 years....

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Roses I have access to two types of bamboo both of which are 'runners' One gets way tall and the other reaches 6-8 feet. Which size would you like? Short has bigger leaves than tall. Neither are 'recommended for residential use' . lol, hope it's not illegal to transport them across state lines!

I'm sure we know that tall Nandina will give the same effect and can be grown in a large container. After all it is called 'Heavenly Bamboo'!!

Also, I have assorted Rose of Sharon from 2-8 feet tall with medpink, lite blue and white with red eye flower color that I can dig for now or Fall Swap (who? Where? When?) when colors are certain. Trying not to count them all but at least ten! Instant hedge!

Holly My understanding is that Rose of Sharon do not come tru from seeds! Cuttings are the only way to insure a flower just like mom's.

Critter Looks like Happy wants to be our Hardy Begonia/Begonia Grandiis supplier! You can cancel my request for peppers. Thanks

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

BTW, I have both white (actually pale pink) and pink Hardy Begonia, but I won't be able to tell which I have right now. It won't even sprout up for a few more weeks....

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I will pot up some Brunneras for you.

Onewish, the egg plant seedlings grew very lanky during my absence in the past few weeks. Hopefully they are much better by the time of the swap :-).

SSG, yes the Aocrus is the variegated yellow+green type (looking like this http://www.smgrowers.com/products/plants/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=38), the same as what I gave you last fall. I will dig up more for you if you still want it.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I would take more of the Aocrus, if you have enough. Don't want to get piggy as you gave me some last year but I wouldn't mind a bit more.

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Jill, may I request a six pack of the tomatoes please.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

OK Holly, I'll ask for Deutzia somewhere else.

Happy, if you should be able to root the Deutzia, that will be fine. Maybe you can just bring a cutting or two and I will try it myself. I

Coleup, maybe I shouldn't plant the Bamboo here. Was going to do it at the far end of the property, but don't want it to cross over to my neighbor's property. I'll keep a lookout for the Nandina instead. Thank you.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Paul, would you happen to have some Nandina for me?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Yankee Cat, if you have more, may I please have some thornless Blackberries??

Odenton, MD(Zone 7b)

Chantel, are any of Becky's succulents still available, if so, may I have a couple?

SSG May I get some more of the wonderful cactus mix? Do you still have a Rose of Sharon available?

Wind, has the Rose of Sharon been claimed yet? Any of the Eyeball plants remaining?

Pixie, may I have the 2 Torenia Kauai if they are still available?

Happy, some of the Lamium please.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Added a few more plants. Let me know if you'll want any bush cuttings.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Terri, I'd like a cutting of Sambucas Nigra, please

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

OK, Jen. I was expecting you to want this one.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Taking my laptop to the computer doctor. I'll try to stay in touch from the old desk top if it works.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

^_^

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Roses -- I'll do both -- I'll try to root it now, and if it roots, fine, but if it doesn't, I'll bring fresh cuttings. I think the blooms will have died by May 18 (day of the swap), so fresh cuttings taken then should root readily.

Catbird: I'll bring you lots of the lamium. How much do you want? I'm going to be pulling out a lot, so you can have as much as you could possibly want. It wiggles around, and I haven't cut it back in years.... It doesn't have very deep roots, so I can just yank it the morning of the swap and put it in a garbage bag and you can plant it as you wish. Or if you only want a small pot of it, I can pot that up for you.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Catbird you got it.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Catbird, I have you down for the other Rose of Sharon and some cactus mix.

Gita, I know I got the seeds at a swap last year, but I can't remember who gave them to me and I didn't keep the seed packet. They were wintersown last spring and these two seedlings made it. I planted them just to see if I could do it. I really don't have room for these 2 trees, so I'm glad they're getting a good home.

Donner, yes I'd love some more of that acorus!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Just a note FIY

Both Happy's Lamium and Vinca Major can be "spillers" for containers and window boxes and thus look good and stay contained and they return for me each year.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

SSG and Holly, there will be plenty of Acorus for you.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Donner,

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Whew I have been kind of absent here. i haven't been able to get on a computer for a while, just quick phone checks. I apologize if I overwhelmed anybody. I just went through every ones list and made notes. Today I added two NOID deciduous azaleas. You can never have enough deciduous azaleas!!! Somebody grab them quick.

Holly: I'm interested in Campanula Pink Octopus, Columbine, Astible (if you have any darker colors), and Ornamental Grass Variegated, Tomatos, the dark begonia. And my black pussy willow cuttings from the seed swap didn't survive. I had one I thought would make it but it pittered out.

Onewish1: I would like one of each of the agastaches please.

FlowaJen: The black mondo grasses are awesome!! Please think of me for some.

Roses_R_Red: Jacob Kline and Agastche Apache

Happy: Anemone hupehensis ‘Hadspen Abundance’

Wind: Tomatoes!

Pixie: Osteospermum Scape Daisy Fireburst

Donnerville: I'd love some of your grass: Acorus 'Ogon'

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

UMD_Terp, you got it!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Paul, I will have you down for some Acorus.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you got it

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

You know I'd like to grab both azaleas, but you also know I'm greedy. Pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. So just take it under advisement that I'm very very interested.

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy, I'll put you down for the larger of the two. If nobody wants the second it is all yours!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Also, Terp, I've got you covered for the Anemone.

Plus, if anyone wants some NOID Chrysanthemums, I just got 3 BOXES of them that a local person was digging out of her yard -- they are in pretty bad shape, but I think I can recover them. I know nothing about them, other than that the "chrysanthemums are small and mostly lavender, white and yellow." The foliage looks like my Chrysanthemum Clara Curtis. Plus some NOID Japanese anemones. I haven't figured out how much I was given, but I think a lot. Just LMK. If I don't get them potted up in the next day or so they will all be history, though....

Paul, I think all the Astilbe will be pastel colors.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Catbird, got you on the tomatoes, and I think that's the last of the 3 dozen in that flat. Depending on how they fare (eg, whether I need my "backup" plants), I may have some additional extras to post closer to swap time. :-)

I apologize if I haven't been acknowledging requests... It may be the weekend before I'll have a chance to go over this thread again and update my have/wants list, but I don't think there have been any requests I can't cover, I just need to catch up!

Wind, if you still have them available, I'd love one of your fuchsia tall phlox and a 'Lady in Red' salvia, please!

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Ok. I was looking for reds or purples.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

hi, Roses, got your requests (and good luck w/your lap top) and also got your request UMD_Terp ^_^ ...Terp, did you want chocolate cherry or plain cherry tomatoes?

Central, MD(Zone 7a)

Chocolate Cherry!! Wow. That's a no brainer.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, and I'm doing my best to root up some figs. I "topped" my tree to reduce its height and had so many nice branches with budding green tips! I read Coleup's link on turning twigs into figs or something like that... I think my cuttings are much, much bigger than the pieces that article was talking about, but no reason they shouldn't "take" anyway. I stuck a few into a moist corner of the garden, put a few more around the edges of a lotus pot (down into the clay mud with a few inches of water covering the mud), and I've got a whole bunch more in a bucket of water. I'll see what I have time to do with them this week... LOL, might end up just bringing the bucket full of cuttings!

"What kind of fig?" you ask. Good question. Actually, there are only 2 possibilities, 'Brown Turkey' and 'Celeste'. I know I've tried growing both in that location, but I can't remember which came first (and perished) and which one is actually there! I don't know if the fruit is notably different for ID purposes. But it's a fairly hardy variety and makes delicious figs!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

I have quite a few Alpine Catchfly plants if anybody is interested. I couldn't find a good pic of this variety online. Here are a few photos of this plant in my own garden.

Chocolate Cherry...... How did I miss that one. Wind, please one for me, too.
Paul one of them might be purple but it would be lighter purple not a dark one. I will see if I can tell which is which.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Does anyone have any May Night salvia to share?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will take any cherry or grape tomatoes anyone has to spare.. I didn't grow any of my own this year.. slacker!!
