Chat and swap thread for The RU at Jan23's on May 18th

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Mint! ROFL I'll know for sure when it starts coming up better, but I should have 'Kentucky Colonel' Spearmint to share, probably also a few 'Hillary's Sweet Lemon'. And I've got a bountiful supply of 'Chocolate Mint' peppermint... it grows up one side of my driveway and always needs to be pulled out of the adjacent little landscape bed. I usually bring bags of it so people can help themselves.

I'll undoubtedly have extra hot peppers, always do, but I'm less sure about sweets, especially since I had to resow peppers last week. oops. I should have extras of 'Sweet Pickles' (delicious 2-3" conical peppers held upright on a compact plant as pretty as any "ornamental" pepper), and I'm also germinating a bunch of seeds from those little multicolored sweet peppers that Costco sells, so if anybody wants to participate in that little experiment... :-)

Wind, were my little Climbing Hydrangea and Japanese Climbing Hydrangea pots from you? For some reason, I didn't get that info on their tags... I think they came to me in little square pots, at least 2 years ago (got planted out into the garden last spring, spent at least one summer in the "nursery" area).

SSG, no worries on the planters. I'm not a very good rose person, so maybe I should wait for a clem. I think most of Becky's clems came from Brushwood, which should help with ID.

Coleup, I've got an order into Goldfinch4's "The Sempervivum Patch," so if you want to add anything into my box to save shipping, just let me know. http://cubits.org/TheSempervivumPatch/store/

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Critter, I found multiple tags per container, so I can't ID the clematis yet. I'm going to get them in the ground, keep a couple that are appropriate for my yard (not too big!), and offer the rest at the fall swap instead. I think there's a gardenia in there somewhere...?

Coleup, they look kind of like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/t/203629994?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&N=5yc1vZbx87&R=203629994#specifications

At least one is from me and one is from Becky.

So Becky's climbing roses are still available! Anyone interested?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Heehee on the mint, critter!! Loves to paint has some lemon balm she said. Actually, I'd like some spearmint, too. Love it in iced tea. My folks had a patch up on the farm.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Coleup, could I please try a Hardy Begonia? I’d also be happy to give a home to any wayward semp chicks or sedum scraps. Hopefully I’ll have some of them to share soon, also!

Onewish, I’d love an Agastache ‘Raspberry Daquiri’ if you still have an extra. Thanks!

FlowAJen, chicks and black mondo grass for me, too, please – if you have enough to go around.

Roses, Aster ‘Blue Moon’ and Monarda ‘Jacob Klein’ please, if still available.

Happy, if you have good luck with the Salvia ‘Black & Blue’ cuttings, I’d love one, please. I can bring you one of Richard’s salvias that I rooted last fall, in return… I don’t know which one it is of the ones I got, but it must be one that’s hardy to zone 6 or 7.

Pixie, can LA & Siberian irises be divided now? Or later in summer like their bearded counterparts? I’ve got a couple out there that look big enough… might have an extra sib or two among the ones in nursery pots, also. I’ll keep an eye out as they come up.

YankeeCat, I’m so excited to see your name on the list! I’d love a start of Egyptian Walking Onion, please. My garden isn’t well mannered, so it will suit. LOL Maybe you’d like a ‘Wild Cherry’ (currant) tomato? I’m assuming you have catnip…

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh, I need empty blue wine bottles so if any of you need an excuse to drink a bit of wine. Just tell yourself that Holly needs the bottles. LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

you got it Jill.. I have been trying to get my walking onion to spread .. without luck... only have 2 small patches after how many years I brought that home from Kassia's swap

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Pixie, May I have one of your Torenia Kauai Deep Blue. I have a yellow Iris not sure what type it is (not bearded) I'll see if I can find a picture of it.

Critter -- I have TONS of hardy begonia -- probably best for me to drive it directly to you some time when I come up because it is a little finicky to get started. My Salvia Black and Blue got badly sunburned (my bad) -- I'm going to wait a couple weeks before I try to root cuttings. In the past it has rooted easily for me.

Holly -- what kind of wine comes in blue bottles? God knows we drink enough wine at this house!

Jan -- just a question on the mondo grass. Did yours spread? I had some black mondo grass a few years ago that I bought at a nursery, and it just sat there for years. I don't know what I did wrong.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Pixie , Glennis is one of my all time favorite coleus ! Four please and one Gold Lace. When do you put your coleus out for the summer? I'll be making the rounds of my favorite local nurseries here scouting for named coleus any number of times between now and swap so if you have a favorite or two let me know and I'll get one if I see it , take cuttings for myself and you can travel home with a good sized plant or two! (I used to work at a nursery that grew almost 200 different coleus....they are my happy plant and source of my screen name) Glad you have a traveling companion! How long will you be in town?
Judy

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Coleup you got it, 4 Glennis, I Gold Lace.
I'll be driving down on Friday as it will take a good part of the day, staying Sat. and driving back home on Sunday!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Happy, our black mondo grass is just sitting there too lol

Jill, we don't have Japanese climbing hydrangea. I don't think your climbing hydrangea came from me. I don't remember bringing it before to a swap, but I could have!!

thank you Pixie!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Happy, my mondo is spreading some. I do like it and will try to encourage it's continued spread. I haven't found it to be a thug, but it hasn't been in that long.

I am very happy you all are keeping track of your own trades. My mind is boggled by the plethora of pretties being shared. My neighbors are going to wonder what is happening. I have been spreading the word that our street will be invaded. Heehee.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Pixie, I'd love one each of your remaining coleus. Thank you!

Oh, another thing from Becky's garden that will be available at the fall swap is irises! I'm going to get the bloom colors ID'd and then divide them in the fall.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Cheap wine. LOL I get some sweet white wine that quite often comes in a blue bottle. I think the Riesling I like is also in a blue bottle. There is a local winery that will give me their used bottles and I can buy them fairly cheap from a local shop for people that brew their own beer and make their own wine but I thought it would be more fun to collect some from my friends. They are for a border in the secret garden. Will post pictures when we do it later this summer.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

ssgardener ~ You got it!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

WOW!!!! What a long CHAT today.....I could not believe it.....

OK! Jill---My lavender is full of new growth already. Seems it was always there.....
I would hate to cut it off but will, if it helps the plant grow bushier for SS.
I can always sprinkle it in my Potpouri.

Holly---It is very likely that you got that "frilly Coleus" (as i call it) from me.
It is a variety I have always had. What I like about it that it can show different colors
depending on the light and location.
Right now--the Coleus growing under my lights is getting BIG! And this "frilly" one has
red outlines all around the leaf. Maybe it is just being under the lights all winter?

Happy---My Black and Blue Salvia made it through the winter and is starting to sprout.
I had it under piles of leaves--as Jill said it was a "tender perennial"...so--I gave it a "blanket"..
I have it in 3 places. I am VERY happy that it is sprouting!

The res are of different photos taken in my garden. Pic. #4 is also from under my lights--with red tones.
There is now one version if this "frilly" Coleus under mu lights right now that has almost black outlines....

I am sure there is a name for this Coleus--but it does show up in different colors....
And--I swear it is one and the same.

Holly -- sadly, we don't favor sweet wine much, so I can't help you on the blue bottles. Were it otherwise we'd be such a good source, and we'd love to have a presence in your secret garden border -- what a great idea!

Jan -- I'd love to look at your mondo grass at the swap just to see what it looks like.

Anyone -- If you happen to be dividing a Boston fern, we'd love a piece. My husband had decided he'd like it for his office, because his mom used to grow it....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I think you may be right Gita. That one came from a plant we had last year and took cuttings into the GH. The mother plant actually looks a bit different color wise than the cuttings we have growing. I thought maybe just because it is older and over wintered that made it look a bit different.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Holly--

Are you making a bottle tree?
I think I have...somewhere....two blue bottles. may be from Champagne?

Donner--I may be able to dig away a small section of my Pulmonaria.
I have it growing in 2 places...small clumps--it is the blue one. And--they are starting to bloom now.

I need to get to my Canna roots. They are still all in my Shop all dry--in boxes..
Usually, I try to plant the smaller sections to share. I haven't even looked...I do have them.

Wind--YOU are the one with the massive bucket-fulls of your red Canna roots last year? Yes?
I took home the last big, ugly pieces...I cannot tell you all how massively this Canna grows!
The roots were lifting up out of the bed, and when I dug it up--it looked like this:
And--BTW--Those round "things" left over from all the blooms--if you let them dry, there are huge,
round seeds inside. One per "pod"....I collected a bunch.

This week is shot--time wise. Too much going on. never even got to my garden this weekend....
Tomorrow is all booked as well--and every day this whole week has something going...

This is the top of a bird bath. The ONE clump of these Canna roots filled it completely.
Will need to break it up a bit...
This is the bloom. Different--no? I also loved the vibrant. green leaves on it.

REQUESTS:
Celeste: can I get Gold Lace and Glennis Coleus?
Memory: can I get a blackberry?
Jill: Can I get a tomato and a crooked willow?
Diana: Can I get some dill please?

Thanks, all!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

once you get Rose Campion you'll have it forever.

You people are swapping up a storm!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I love it, I just shook the seeds out of the flowers and it spread with no effort

The swapping is crazy I had to go back and check a few times to see if I missed anything

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, flowAjen -- if you still have it, I'd love both the rose campion and the beautiful Siberian iris!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Gotcha down for both

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

got it Jen. Love the photos of your blooms - so pretty!!

HollyAnn, do you know the ID on that daylily by any chance?

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Is anyone interested in the 2-year-old Rose of Sharon trees with mystery flower color? It's a bit cumbersome to transport so I'm thinking about offering it to my neighborhood group, unless someone from MAF really wants it!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Jen, got you down for both coleus. :)

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Gotcha covered, Pixie and Critter.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Coleup, would you be able to supply me with a Bamboo Plant?

SS I'll take the Rose of Sharon if it's still available.

Wind, I'd like some Climbing Hydrangea and/or the Climbing Clematis if you have enough.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

RRR, I'm so glad it has a new home!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

We'll love seeing it here.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Holly, if you have more of the Deutzia left, I would appreciate some.
