Yay!
turns out I only have one stinging nettle, but it's a good one.
If the others come out from under the mulch, I'll get them as well.
so I have pond thing, nettle, & spuria for steadycam
& old yellow irises for patrob.
The best luck I've had with roses was to
take the cuttings in the autumn,
gently scrape a little of the "bark" off one side of the bottom of the cutting to expose the tissue that actually roots,
lick them (our saliva has an enzyme similar to willow water or rooting hormone),
put them in pots of moist soil, *a whole bunch in each pot*,
keep them in shade, in an area that's protected from drying winds, all winter,
never let them dry out,
& cover them with several inches of autumn leaves if there's to be a hard freeze.
I spritz the foliage (I always leave a few leaves at the top) to keep it hydrated.
With some kinds, I've had nearly every cutting root, & with some, zero.
Martha Gonzales, for instance, seems to root cheerfully no matter how I manage to mistreat it & no matter when I take the cuttings.
edited to add:
Cheryl, that's okay; thanks for letting me know.

2013 N Central TX RU April 21st in Arlington #2 TRADE
Sylviatexas, patrob, gfwaco, I have you covered for your latest requests.
Sylvia, can I have a few of your white irises?
This message was edited Mar 31, 2013 6:10 PM
Thanks Dennis!
Angel
Thank you, Dennis.
Thanks, Dennis!
& yep, you can have bushels of white irises.
I'm serious.
Doesn't somebody need irises for landscaping a bunch of acreage or a city park or an airport?
Sylviatexas - I will take some. I have a long place by my fence to fill.
Angel
Yay!
Does anyone have any Hyssop? or have you had any luck with it growing here? I have acquired some lavender seeds and I am thinking they are not going to do well in my yard. If anyone has any Hyssop they want to trade for I might try that instead, and put the lavender seeds on the trade list.
Angel
Angel, we had a discussion on hyssop aka agastache a couple weeks ago. concensus was that no one has had much luck with it.
pbtxlady - do you by chance have any more of the echinacea purpurea seedlings? I would love some if you do. I don't have much to trade but take a look and see if you can use anything.
Steadycam - thanks! want some lavender seeds? LOL
Angel

Smockette, can I have a few buckets?
Angel, here's the thread
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1297500/?hl=agastache
why dont you try the hyssop and then teach us all how to do it!

Sylvia I do have a couple small prairie verbeana for you though.
Cheryl
I start rose cuttings by making a 12 inch cutting, and sticking 6 inches with a couple of nodes under ground in a heavy soil. I try to do this in November or December. Grafted roses don't do well, but antiques do almost 100% if I remember to water.
Sylvia, I have Mrs. Duelberg for you.
Stephanie, I have you down for the columbine and leaves. Do you want the leaves shredded or whole? I have both. Also, we had talked earlier about dill--do you happen to have a seedling you can spare? All of mine came up and then bit the dust before I could get them planted out. Same with the oregano and cumin. :( I'm going to try the cumin again and can bring you one if you like.
Angel, yes, I have tons of the echies. This year they are coming up in my lawn. :) Got you down.
Sylvia, got you down for everything you asked. I saw that you asked someone else for obedient plants and I will bring a couple of those too. No, no, I insist (LOL). I love them, but they are everywhere! If you have a white datura, I would love that. I would also like one of any irises you still have (especially the spuria since I don't think I have one of those). Are you the same Sylvia who came to one of the RUs a few years ago and gave me a Cinnamon Girl iris? We have so enjoyed it.
steadycam, do you know anything about the brunfelsia? That's a beautiful picture and I would like to try it if it's not a thug.
@ Stephanietx.... You have the Sheffield Daisy (btw, it was from a bunch given to me by bluesmaven's mom Sitz) It droops so great for curb or container.
@ Sylviatexas, Hi long time no see! Welcome to the mix for spring 2013!
I will have the items you wanted for you, and I am sure I can round up an Althea too.
frostweed
lyreleaf sage
Virginia sweetspire
Hot Lips salvia
Augusta Duleberg salvia
oxalis
false foxglove
Althea (maybe white, purple or white/burg)
I would take the Iris Orientalis, & a dozen or more mixture of the white and yellow iris from your garden. Also some of your 1g pots.
Thanks to all for the welcome!
Yes, Cinnamon Girl is the one I brought.
love that iris!
Sheila, thanks for everything!
I'll bring your Iris Orientalis, iris mixture, & a stack of pots.
pbtxlady, I did see yesterday that the datura is coming up, & I have you down for the spuria & other irises.
Newton, thanks for the prairie verbena.
The hotter our summers become, the more I appreciate things that thrive in the sun!
Bananna, thanks for the Duelberg.
I do dearly love salvias.
Steadycam, that is one sweet antique rose!
I hope it thrives.
(As Gypsi said, regular, heavy soil from the garden is the best, & burying a couple of nodes gives the cutting more opportunity.)
& that Brunfelsia is breathtaking!
SteadyCam - that is stunning. Tiger Lilies and Roses are the only thing I have ever had luck growing with any certainty. I don't know how I do it, so me giving advice is useless. It is just instinct with the roses I guess. I put them in water till they root and when they do I plant them. No fuss.
Here are a couple of pics of my roses at my old house before we moved. They were all from cuttings and are 3 years old at the point of the pictures. The climbers are Don Juans. Not trade related, just thought you might like to see.
My Goal is to cover the yard in roses again.
Angel
OK, here is a request list for several of you guys. Not sure if you still have these, if not no problem.
Steadycam – Giant Turks cap, lantana (any colors), Hyacinth bean vine plants
Pbtxlady - colocasia Black Magic pups, Texas yellow columbine seedlings, Japanese iris
Patrob - Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem grass), and Texas Laurel seedling
Stephanietx-Blackfoot daisy
Gypsi – Peach iris, and some Dutch Bearded
Smockette – 3 lg 2 sm buckets, and three of your blue bottles
gfwaco, I can bring you cuttings from Martha Gonzales & what I think is Old Blush & some other pink rose if you'd like.
Just let me know.
& if I get the chance, I'll ask a couple of people for cuttings from their white & yellow Banksias.
talk about "covering the house"!
(& they're pretty much evergreen, & they're thornless.)
Sheila, I've got you down for little bluestem and Texas mountain laurel.
I looked up Brunfelsia and found it to be toxic if my dogs ate it, odds are, one would. So like Datura and Oleander, and a few other things, I have to pass. I do have an elderberry but the dogs are never on that lot.
I just love Dave's Garden, plantfiles are a bonus! Looking forward to the swap. I still have some potted up pale early blooming daffodils available, they are very heavily scented too.
And Iris and peach iris are not in short supply.
I would like some woodland ferns if anyone has divisions, just some kind of cold hardy outdoor fern to put under my pine tree and under my giant butterfly bush.
And if anyone wants white buddleia cuttings, just ask. It lives yet another year (darn thing got 14 foot tall, did some serious pruning last year.)
Sheila, I have you down for the things you requested.
pbtx, The Brunfelsia would never be a thug where you live. It would freeze to the ground every time, I think. These survived our 4 days of 26* in 2009 followed two weeks later by a repeat so I think they are more tolerant of the cold than DG states. This place was really neglected and I found only a few volunteers. I'll bring you one and you can try it. Sometimes if you bring a plant in for a couple years and let it get big enough, it will then make it thru a freeze if you plant it then in the ground. I picked a bouquet while I was there and my kitchen smells wonderful, a bit like Carolina Jessamine.
Angel, If you're having difficulty finding something to grow veggies in, find out about the buckets Smockette has to offer. cut the bottoms out and grow tomatoes, pepperes egg plants, etc. 5 gal buckets make great grow pots for veggies.
Got you, Sheila.
Thanks, steadycam, I'd love to try the brunfelsia. I can protect it if need be.
Hi Sylviatexas, I have you down for Stuttgart canna, chocolate mint, trailing lantana, and crinum lily. Also, I have some seeds from my lavender Althea/Rose of Sharon, so I will bring some for you. I will keep a lookout for seedlings coming up around the Altheas and if I find any I'll pot them for you.
I would love to have white irises, spuria iris, nandina, mexican petunia, and sunflower seeds. If any of them are all spoken for, that's no problem. Thanks.
Thanks!
I love that canna, don't think I've seen it before;
it looks like it can appreciate some shade...which I have in abundance.
I'll bring the things you asked for!
Gypsi, I'd like to have some white buddleia cuttings.
SteadyCam - I thought of the bucket thing, but the problem is that I have to have "beds" in my yard (as per the landlord) He said I could dig up the grass and give it back to him for sod, but I cant kill the grass and I have a very small porch.
I think I am going to see if he has some wood scraps he might let me have, I know he has some pavers that I can make into "pots". I was just thinking if I had some unique things that I could place in a bed type situation then I could eventually put my roses around the yard. It is a very weird, very small yard so I have to plan carefully, and right now only one place gets full sun. The rest of the yard is partial shade till I get my hubby to trim some overgrown trees from behind the fence.
BTW, the veggies I got covered. I am looking for the extra space for the flowers now.
Sylvia: You are amazing to offer that! I will take you up on that offer for sure! I have one bed we are going to prepare this weekend or next weekend just for roses and Canna's if I can get some. I need height and love the canna's colors and ability to spread.
oh if anyone has any Canna's they can spare, I will take them off your hands LOL!
Angel
I've seen cat litter buckets used to grow tomatoes in a homemade "upside-down tomato" planter, just can't remember exactly how it was done.
They were hanging from a long pole suspended along the eaves over the garage door.
GFWaco, I will bring you some Stuttgart Cannas that bloom orange. They get 6-7 foot tall and multiply quickly.
Sylvia, my cannas get blasted by full afternoon sun all summer, but don't care a bit. They have never had much variegation, though, just some thin white stripes. I don't know if it's too much sun or the PH of the soil. I moved a few into the shade last week, hoping to see more stripes this year.
Sylvia: I have an upside down planter but we just got a new metal canopy over our RV (that we live in) so I have to figure out how to hang the silly thing LOL
Covenantgarden: Thanks! I love those. I used to have some years ago. I have the perfect corner of the yard for them. Look at my list and see if you might want anything I have on there. I just moved in so I don't have much but if you see anything let me know.
Angel
someone wanted a nandina? I discovered a really pathetic one that got droughted last year but lived. It is the small leaved tall variety. My yard is so full of actual blooming shrubs, this would do better with a repot in decent soil or in the ground, it is in clay right now, in a pot, and looking for a home with TLC.
Patrob, I will take some white buddleia cuttings tomorrow and see if I can get them going
Gypsi, have you ever rooted the buddleia before? When I root mine, I put it in a plastic cup with a domed lid (think frappucino) and tape over the hole in the lid. It roots almost overnight that way. When I can see the roots on the side or bottom, I take off the tape.
Angel, I will check my cannas and bring one if I can. I *think I have one left of the tall burgundy one with red flowers. (Pat, did you mention the name earlier?) I also have a dwarf one, with flowers sort of a tangerine color (I believe the name is Angel Pink but not sure) but it's just now coming up so I don't know yet how much there is.
Can't I talk anyone into taking some of my black gamecock louisiana iris? It really needs to be divided and I hate to throw it away. I grow mine in water, but I think it grows in the ground too. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://i.parkseed.com/images/xxl/49797.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.waysidegardens.com/iris-louisiana-black-gamecock/p/49797/&h=900&w=900&sz=132&tbnid=kjk0FXo0obN8qM:&tbnh=103&tbnw=103&zoom=1&usg=__5AEsLV4Hw4comtDiaLjGuPMssiw=&docid=CtWmxj5vR_fUiM&sa=X&ei=jKlbUcbzIciNrAHyxoG4Dw&ved=0CEMQ9QEwBA&dur=415 Oh, yeah, and I have a couple of small tubers from my white/yellow very prolific water lily. They need homes too. It's nymphea odorato.

Ive been pondering that iris especially since Im thinking of a pond again. I'll take a few, whatever you want to give.
You got it. :) Do you want to try the water lily too?
I think I will wait on the water lily. I dont want to bite off more than I can chew, as they say. Maybe at a future RU. Thanks for offering. I appreciate it.
