asparagus shoot 2-9-13, that puny white thing-shows the stubble from fronds beside it. Last years fronds cuz I wasn't home. This one is Mary/Martha Washington and can bloom and reseed itself... I know one of those Washington gals anyway...I grow Daikon radishes for the little bloom and because they break down into a sulphur base which many bugs dont like...
New property, new challenges, new unknown plants
Nope, no asparagus! I have had some new plants emerge, and some bloom! Pics in following posts!
So pretty pussy willows!
You have daylilies there, and iris with perhaps weedy grasses grown in them.
Fun waiting to see just which of thousands of cultivars daylilies you have.
Iris are not 'supposed' to be dug and moved during spring but try to weed out and then feed them.
Funny, I just thought about this thread the other day and wondered how spring was going!
1, 5 greek anemone
2 creeping phlox
4 is muscari.
Thanks for the i.d.'s sally and pepper!
More stuff has bloomed and/or come up outta the ground...including my asparagus I started from seed :) That's the first picture! I had to replant the tulips cuz the bushel planters were falling apart...and one of them bloomed...picture 2. Pic 3 is the creeping phlox...it's everywhere! I think pic 4 is a rose bush...dunno if you can see the color of the leaves or not in the pic, but it's dark green in the middle of the leaf, and darkens/changes color to an almost purple at the edges. Pic 5 is the Jap Maple getting its leaves.
Pic 1 is hostas I think. There are four "clumps" of them. The other hostas are in pic 4, along with some other plants...rose bushes maybe?
Pic 2 is the pussy willow...lost almost all of it's fuzzies.
Pic 3 is one of the grape vines on the fence around the garden getting its leaves
Pic 5 is some sort of creeping vine/plant coming from the base of a tree.
the tree line tree in the last batch is a classic native dogwood. Lots of excitement there with all the new things!
Pic 5 in the post before last looks like vinca minor vine. Varigated. Very popular and aggressive vine.
I agree with dogwood in last batch of pictures also. Great tree to have!!
Dunno abt dogwood, I dont see the classic rusty hole on the tips of the petals, but my phone views are tiny. and in the Md area it is cherry tree time.
kitt, it's unquestionably dogwood, and you'll agree when you can see the pics better. I know how the phone views are! ((squint))
The water box could be a biological filter. I have one in a half wine barrel set up for my pond. It works by harboring the good micro-buggies, usually in a bed of lava rock, and then the pond water is circulated through the rock and back into the pond. The micro-buggies eat the fish poop and such to keep the water clean. The grass is probably weeds, I learned long ago not to plant in the biological filter, it's just to good a medium and the roots will ruin the system. You can revive it easy enough, I'd look online to learn more about it. It's a good eco way to take care of your pond without going the full tilt pond filter and chemicals. Another good eco thing to know about is a UV filter for your pond. They are expensive but if you get a lot of algae they are the best solution.
Here are some updated and new pics. I think I have an azalea bush, and more rose bushes than I originally thought. There is also a tall bush/tree near my chicken coop that bloomed flowers that resemble honeysuckle only they are pink and the bees LOVE them. There are some thorny plants...can't tell if they are berry bushes like raspberry or blackberry, or a types of roses. I know nothing when it comes to telling them apart...until they either sprout roses or berries!
More pics to come in following replies since they all will not fit. Also, I'll probably post some of these in the plant i.d. section in case no one can help identify here in this thread.
These are pics of the bush with honeysuckle-like flowers:
Not a rose. BLACKBERRY (or dewberry) definitely- i dont know raspberry but could be that as well. Your yard is a veritable haven of bird, butterfly and bee sanctuary.
Roses canes are different, and shouldnt get chopped- no clue abt the azalea but prob is. There are variegated hostas- and gingers look like hosta to meso... everyones gardens are bustin out the seams and they are busy now. Tulips will be back- they bloom once and start feeding the bulb again. Not this year tho. Lonicera is honeysuckle- if that bush is what that is- So Pretty.
Yes to shrub honeysuckle (keeper) and hostas, and azalea, and blackberries. Assume blackberries or other brables until you see 'rose flowers'
No crying over the tulips they don't generally last long unless some old cultivars or species. No ginger here, those are all hosta, we don't have ginger overwinter.
Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!!!! Look what I just found growing in one of the weed infested raised beds in the garden!!!! It's ASPARAGUS!!!! What do I do? Is it too tall to harvest??? How did it survive with so many WEEDS???? Some have the "feathery fronds" or whatever they are called, some haven't reached that stage if they have that stage at all! I've never seen asparagus except in the grocery store...I don't know what to do!!! Each "spear" that doesn't have the little branches on it stands around 2-3 feet tall right now. Do I cut them? HELP!!!
EDIT: Sorry, that first pic is of the sage...I clicked it to upload by accident!

That's great!!!
Weed carefully all that wild pea-bean things on the ground, Leave all the tall ones and start cutting new stalks as long as they are bigger than a pencil thickness., when they are about a foot tall they soon stretch and start to open their buds. Looks like a good healthy patch!
Ordinarily you would start cutting the first spears that appear.
When they start coming up skinny, stop cutting and pile on some compost. Let the fronds grow all summer.
What about the spears you see in the picture? They are between 2-3 ft tall with the typical asparagus heads you see in the store (I'm not talking about the really tall ones that have the fronds). Do I leave them or cut them?
Maybe someone else will have an opinion, I am still building up my asparagus so I am very conservative about cutting them. You could cut one and see if it still tender at that size; only the top part of course will be tender. Snap it right off in the garden and eat it raw!!
If you cut below the buds that stalk will never leaf out, so cut the whole thing if you do.
The bed is weeded! I lost two or three spears (one to my son who decided to walk right on one of them) and a couple due to having to dig up nasty tree of heavens. I discovered a few seedlings too :). I know they are seedlings cuz I am growing some asparagus inside my house...Mary Washington heirlooms...and they look exactly like these baby asparagus!
And...just to make sure...there is absolutely no way these are anything BUT asparagus, right? Like, there aren't any poisonous plants that resemble asparagus? I suffer from severe anxiety, and I thought about breaking one off and taste testing...but then I freaked thinking I'd poison myself. :/
I'm 110% sure you have asparagus there. And asparagus babies
; ^)
Yay! Now that the asparagus issue is solved, it's time for me to post more pictures of plants around the property that have matured and others just discovered!
yummy big garden of nice dirt
YEs you did find blueberry- I saw your ID thread. Of course they need to be weeded, and then mulch well, they like moist roots and the roots are fine and near the surface. I use my neighbor's pine needles for my blueberry bush mulch. Do you know how your soil pH runs? THey like it acidic like azaleas.
There's a lone daffodil plant that bloomed in one of the raised beds. Also, the irises are popping up their stems :). The last picture shows where I found tons of blackberry and raspberry bushes. They are at the back of the garden, between the raised beds and back grape vines. I cut down all the weeds and marked each one with orange marking tape so I knew where they all were! I also weeded one of the beds that had more blackberry and/or raspberry bushes!
Nope, don't know the ph. Will test the soil at a later date! I've got plenty of pine needles on the property LOL, so I have plenty of mulch :)
It'll be fun to see what the raspberries and blackberries turn out like. They could all be wild ones.
