Gardens Gems Purchased for 2013
I never even looked at the peonies the 2 days or so the ground was open......
Beautiful peony, Bill!
Peonies envy...
Victor!
OK, here's what I clicked upon today: Logees for a Tophat blueberry, and an acai bush.
Lazy S's nursery had been down but they are up tonight. I have had very well packed healthy plants from them, so I am buying teensy trees and shrubs to nurse into size as follows: For container: Salix matsudana 'Golden Curls' and Buddleia davidii Purple Emperor; trees: Nyssa sylvatica and Oxydendrum arboreum; shrubs: Ceanothus americanus, Itea virginica 'Little Henry,' Lindera augustifolia and Lindera benzoin, Viburnum aceriforium, and plants: Clematis integrifolia, Helleborus xhybridus 'Red Sapphire' more Gaulteria procumbens, Anemonella thalicroides and more Aruncus 'Misty Lace." I still have to select a Cornus florida for part shade, and buy a scarlet Oak from the east coast (I'm ignorant but afraid of the Oak fungus on the West coast). My DD1 told me she wanted betula niger, and we did have some once, but I can't seem to keep them from getting a disease eventually, so it would be another research project to find ones that don't fall down around here (just look along the highways and expressways--they are blown all over in this region). It would not be worthwhile to buy huge trees because I don't know which trees are being killed by the presence of a forest of Norway maples around our borders--just look at the forest floors--nothing grows there.
Unfortunately, the areas closer to the house will have to wait. That's where I'm intending to plant dwarf JM's and such. If I get my way, we'll have some excavating and a terrace and a water feature eventually ;)
It doesn't cost that much to dream...
Inspiring. I have to go look some of them up. I usually order from Lazy S as I have had good luck with them in the past. We planted a stand of 10 or 12 Nyssa sylvatica back in 1983. Love them, but they were slow to get going, but now very pretty. We lost one early on, but the rest did fine with little attention. Good luck with such a big undertaking. Patti
just remember rosemary all those trees/bushes do grow up - i am at the point where some decisions will need to made and move some out for others i would rather have.
little henry sends out suckers and i have plenty here if you want one.
Sounds like a plan, Rosemary! Some nice plants that should attract wildlife.
Thanks for the encouragement! Too bad I already ordered 'Little Henry' Bill, but maybe I'll beg you for some more after the order comes--if it thrives.
I actually look forward to the editing part of gardening--that means too much of a good thing. All this is an emperiment for me. Everything won't thrive in my lousy shady sandy rocky soil. I can just see the Nyssa's tap root hitting the rock ledge and perishing, but one has gotta try. That's why I only spent $11 at most for each of the trees.
Lazy S's nursery was very nice. They offered me a free plant of my choice because their submit button was broken the first try. So if they want to, they'll give me something from the Jewel Series of Hellebores because they are kind.
The rue anemeone is to remember them as they grew near the house where I grew up. I believe they may be a host plant like many of these selections.
Ohh Patti! Love Golden Lotus. I ordered it earlier this winter, I think from Bluestone. It will be a definite part of my garden improvement plans this year.
While looking for daylily pics to send to Karen's birthday site, I could see the backyard changing over the past two years. Sometimes the improvements are so gradual that we forget.
That's a pretty hellebore.....out of 5, I have 2 that are budded...nothing yet on the others.
Oh you lucky gardeners! Such pretties peaking through up there. I'm ready to come north!
Has anyone received their Caladiums yet? I usually have mine by now
No, I was thinking about that this morning. We have had a cooler spring, so he is probably waiting.
I also would like to get mine into their containers soon.
None for me, yet.
none for me either
I d-mailed Bill from Caladiums4less, I'll let you know what he says
