Gardens Gems Purchased for 2013

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Marilyn, Wise to take down befor they fall down.
We lost all the scots pines along the east border w/neighbor.#4 I busted my butt transplanting all the shade lovers because that area is now full sun.
I'm sure your gardens will be great even tho they are different than the past.

Thomaston, CT

The pines are on the way down right now....can't believe how much light is coming into the office....behind the pines are my neighbor's half grown spruce, so my rhodos should stay happy.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I bought these plugs a while back from ebay.. plectranthus brazilian purple.. look how nice they are!!.. want to pinch them but you know I hate throwing out cuttings.. and I have so many of them.. going to break my heart not rooting more

Very healthy looking....

Thanks for the back-up, Allison! LOL. Those little babies look terrific!

Marilyn, so glad you are taking the trees down. We found out how lucky we were taking those big maples down at the farm. They would have caused lots of damage in the hurricane - as the others on the road did. Those went down across the road and trapped people for awhile. Now you can have fun planning a new sunny garden! LOL

Ahh, Jan - thou knowest me too well! 😈

Ok, so I thought I might have to leave my beauty of a coral drift rose behind, and then I got the idea to see if I could find one to replace it for a reasonable price. Aha....I bought the same coral one and a light peach one from Evergreen Nursery to go in the new Conn garden. 😍😁😃

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Love it when that happens

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

yes, it provides a healing balm to departure abandonment guilt. 😊

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

You can root roses from stem cuttings.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I've never had luck doing that, Debi....how do you do it? I must do something wrong. I would like to try it with this one.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Just cut a stem that has already flowered and about pencil thickness. Cut the bloom off. Remove some lower leaves and make some cuts in the stem for root growth. Place in soil, keep it moist, and not in full sun, and wait.
Mine did best when I was on vacation and not checking it all the time. I kept it potted in the garage the first winter.
Some might work better than others.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Debi! I may give it a try tomorrow. 👍

Thomaston, CT

My Dad used to stick the cutting into Rootone, then into moist soil with a mason jar over it....out of direct sun....he rooted many plants this way.....I don't have his green thumb!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I'm promising myself that I will try this with every shrub and bush that I have. This includes 50 rose bushes and 25 other types of flowering bushes. I have lots of friends and family that would enjoy having them in their gardens!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

50 rose bushes Terri? Holy COW! Whats your secret?...besides being 2 zones warmer I mean. :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I scored 2 of each.......

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I've been here for 7 summers now. Each year I add new bushes, lots of them from co-ops and trades. We had lots of empty space to fill up on our 2 acre empty lot. My grandfather always had rose bushes in his garden. It was the only plant that he would grow besides fruits and veggies and I really loved the color and fragrance that they added to his gardens. I grew up living with these roses and they still are my favorites. They are a lot like tomatoes in their requirements. Use organic sprays for bugs and diseases, water them, keep them in the sun.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Terri, I too had roses the entire length of our driveway (approx. 40 feet long) when I was growing up. I guess I didn't learn anything though...I only have good results with rugosa's. My others are alive, but barely. :(

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I started some for my brother a few years ago. Dipped them in Rootone and put them in some pro mix inside a large zip baggie, the more you can put in without touching the sides the better. Kept them in shade and in a few weeks I could see the roots through the bag.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

That seems easy enough, Ronnie. I hope I have some success this way. My attempts at rooting in the past haven't done very well.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Love all of Terri's roses!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

If I'm successful, you can have some, Jen. Or, you can come up again in early June and take all the clippings of everything that you want (including your rocks).

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes I still need to come get rocks!

No flowers for me this year, I keep telling myself I am concentrating on veggies and fruits this year

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

ROCKS?!?!

recieved my itoh peony order from a coop yesterday - only got 1 of the two ordered and a check for the missing one - no notice beforehand that only one was available - at least the one ordered, garden treasure, was the one i wanted more. roots look great, need to get it into a pot.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yes, you should see all the rocks she has for me!

Thomaston, CT

Pixie, love the echies! They'll brighten a garden fast......try Morden Sunrise for a rose...I can't kill mine, though the plow tries every year...it blooms from May to heavy frost! Bill, your peony sounds nice....what color?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I had Morden S., I killed it. My defense is it came very tiny so maybe I put it in the ground too soon. :(

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

marilyn it is yellow with red - http://hollingsworthpeonies.com/itoh_intersectionals - cindy liked it better than bartzilla as it had more red in it - tried to get it last year and go shorted then so glad to finally have it.

Thomaston, CT

Very nice....color should compliment anything......

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Love that one Bill

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Hope my P. Itoh Garden Treasure comes back but I can't remember seeing it this spring. I will have to go around and see which of the Itoh's came back as well as which of the bunch of other Peonies that I also planted last fall are showing signs of having made it through their first winter. Once they make it though a winter they are usually good forever. I know I have seen some of them popping up while doing my spring cleaning, but I didn't do a head count yet. Fingers crossed. Patti
