Thomaston, CT

Oh, no, Jen....hope your son is feeling better...fevers are scary! My DIL is going back to work full time sometime in Jan. Asked if I would babysit Grant from 12 to 3 one day a week...long trip for me, but I said yes.

Thomaston, CT

Grrrr! Just spent over an hour at car dealership...such crooks.....really manipulating cost....told them unless they gave me 2,000 more for my car, they could keep theirs.....then I walked out!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Good for you! They might call you back tomorrow and agree.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Been sick with a cold the last couple of days. Everyone in our household has been sick this past week. I was the last one to get it. Fun.

Allison, I believe in the homeopathic remedies. My mother used to use them, and I've used them. Took some for tooth ache once, and went away within half and hour and never returned. That's a big WOW! My mother used to get a gel that was similar to that Arnicare. I'm going to have to pick some up.

Jen, I may have to try that side sleeper pillow. I get a lot of neck pain myself, and always sleep on my side.

Memory, I live with a person who is mentally ill, and it's very stressful when the poop hits the fan, so to speak, which seems to happen about every 3-4 months. Just happened over a week ago. She has a bi-polar disorder. I've committed myself for the last year and a half to helping her out, but it's been tough. It's terrible for a person to live with a mental illness, knowing they will never get better, maybe just get things under some control with meds. I think it would be horrible if she were forcibly committed and forced to take her meds. She had one quack psychologist prescribing way too many meds in high doses to here at one time, and she was so messed up she didn't know if she were coming or going. She seems to be doing fairly well on the few she's taking now.

Horrible, terrifying tragedy, that massacre in CT. I could not believe it happened. I'm still shocked. I could not watch much about it on the news. It was just too much.

Victor, it's funny you should mention how that shooter's mother was a doomsday prepper. I have been watching that show on NG, and there was a story about a mother and son. The son was the prepper in that family. I find the show interesting, but these people are nuts. I would prefer to put my faith in God in the face of a doomsday event. I don't think I would survive very long, anyhow. Whatever will be, will be. BTW, I'm not surprised your interview was not used. Sad statement about our times.

Jen, congrats on the birth of your grand niece! Some good news. Not good news for your son, though. Hope he feels better soon.

Allison, prayers go out to your sister and family. I hope they can find some comfort during this holiday season.

Jo, glad to hear your healing is progressing nicely. Yay for being able to drive!

I have watched 3 news segments with interviews with parents with violent children.Part of the point of these interviews was"Dont blame the parents"

What a hellish life they have and the system isnt much help.

Government services are short lived for one couple with a psychotic daughter who has periods of violence. She takes all their time, not to mention being onguard, shuffling from one agency to another, her care at each lasts a month and then parents need to find another program.
They have other children who need to be protected from their sister.

I have thought for sometime now the Newtown incident is just as much to do with our mental health system as gun controle,we need to build and adiquitly staff more institutions for permanent residents.
How come there are billions spent on sports stadiums and we cant protect ourselves from our own population?
The interviewer asked this couple"what do you see for a future for your daughter?" They said possibly runaway for the last time, prostitution, drugs, pregnancies, and eventually a bad end from within the street culture"

The father is a school guard and said arming them wouldnt deter a disturbed gunman for more than a few seconds.

I agree with both...there was an armed guard at Columbine....and we do need places for these mentally ill children....

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Amen to that, on needing places for the mentally ill. My friend, who has been in and out of so many mental hospitals, told me that so many of the people who go in there are homeless. Most families can't, or won't or are unable to deal with them. It's extremely stressful. My friend's mother is in her 60s, has been through cancer treatments 3 times, and suffers from a myriad of health problems. She also has a very negative attitude, for the most part, and cannot be supportive of her daughter's efforts to try and better her life, just picks apart everything and tells her she's selfish. One of her sons is a long time drug addict, out of work for a few years now, will probably owe back child support for the rest of his life, lives with his parents, constantly in trouble with the law (I could go on), etc. Her father is a selfish man who keeps to himself and tries to stay out of everyone's way. It really weighs on my friend that she can't live up to her parents' expectations (her mother mostly). I have to keep reminding her that she has to stop trying to live up to what her mother wants, as her mother won't change. She has to decide what her own expectations for herself are, and live up to those. She is a past prescription drug abuser, and has been drug free for 2 years now. She's been trying her best, and I'm very proud of her for her efforts. That's all a person can do is try their best.

There are people people bare awful burdens in their lives.
This season just sheds light on them even harder.
I am so grateful for my children and Handle's Messiah which I have been listening to this afternoon.
Given the climate of the past few months ,this isnt the best holiday I can remember.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

YES on mental health help, screening and, most important, facilities for committing! Assault ban was in effect during Columbine and many other mass shootings. And, yes, Columbine had an armed security guard who traded shots with them. I still like the idea of highly trained armed security or cops.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Was shocked and disgusted to read yesterday that a CNN panelist, who is adamant about blaming guns for everything, called for making public all the crime scene photos of the dead children! Can you believe this?!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its time for the panalests to calm down. I still cant get the image of those sweet 6-7 year olds out of my head.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes. I had a few choice words for him.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I also find myself yelling at the TV more these days.

Thomaston, CT

Attended a town prayer vigil last night...the son & DIL of my friends from Bible study spoke.....3 children from their neighborhood are gone...the service did help.....all our first responders were there......although there were hundreds present, including children, you could have heard a pin drop in the hour that we were there in the firehouse.....very respectful....

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

It's a sad crazy world, 2 firemen were shot and killed while responding to a (set?) fire not far from me.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is terrible debi.

marilyn it is nice there was that number of people there is support.

Thomaston, CT

Just awful, Debi.....probably another individual with a history of violence......Yes, Bill, It was nice that so many folks turned out.....

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

wow

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The guy who shot the firemen was a convicted killer who only served 17 years for beating his grandmother to death with a hammer!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

OMG

South Hamilton, MA

Evidently one does not get life for crimes against the elderly.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I know.
One of the firemen was only 19.

The firehouse in this suburb blew its horn every hour for at least 10 minutes .I lost count of how many times because I didnt get it until the last 2 hours.
The people who live in his neighborhood lost everything when their houses burned.
This is probably the most disastrous crismis I can remember.

Just found the article. It made CNN last night.
