red spots on my Minerva Amaryllis

Lakeview, OH

I noticed that my Minerva has red spots on both sides of the bud, should I dig it up(gently) and see how far it has gone? If so what do I do with it, I still have a couple of those disks that the Wal-Mart kits have in them, would it be a good idea to plant it in there? HELP!!!!! My leaves are also a strange color too.

Are 'those discs' fertilizer? I would add fertilizer now, when the Amaryllis is starting to grow.

The discs I was talking about were the ones that come with the box kits. And the other plants are doing fine.

Well, assuming they are fertilizer I would tuck them under the soil near the edge of the container, but still surrounded by soil. Not too deep, just hidden. That way, when you water, the fertilizer will soak deeper into the soil as the tablet dissolves.

I think the red spots are just a color variation of this variety.

Thanks Diana_K, the discs I was talking about are the ones you can plant your plant in instead of soil. You pour water on it and wait a while and you can just put your plant in there. I guess you are right, the one that has red on it is growing too, you can actually see where the new green is on both of them. I was told that since I used Miracle-Gro potting soil, it has fertilizer in it. Here is the two pictures where you can see the new greenery. The first photo is the Minerva and the second is Red Lion.

The discs that come with these kits are REALLY BAD. You want a loose, free flowing soil. Half potting mix, half Perlite.
They need a good draining mix.

hold back on watering a little. it might be red blotch - common with amaryllis and similar bulbs like crinum. this happens when there is too much moisture and too little sunlight. since it is indoors it helps if you underwater

and as tommy says above - those pellets are not good, and they do not drain properly. so hold the water

sorry i forgot to mention it's advised that you get rid of the entire plant since it is infected with the spores. if you withhold watering, the process might slow down and you might get the blooms, but red blotch does damage the plant enough to deform it or ruin the flowers.
