South Hamilton, MA

brother is 8 1/2 years older. He took me to Packer games yrs ago when they played some games in Milwaukee. I asked him as I offered to buy my ticket, but I knew I couldn't go by myself.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yeah I need a "like" for Celeste's shirt!!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

pixie!! I was the oldest so I didnt have harassment from older sis.
I had braids too.Down to my waist and the kids on the playground tied mine to the swings.
I have no idea how they dared,I was the tallest and biggest girl in the class.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL Jo! Mine were down to my waist too....think thats why we keep our hair short as adults?? Heee hee he

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

In those days ( the 40's) getting your hair cut into a short style was a right of passage when a girl went from 12 to 13.
I actually couldnt wait until I could start the quarterly TONI HOME perm routine and have curls.
Being frugal Germans my grandmother insisted on saving the left over processing liquid to use on another head in the family.

We used canning jar rubbers cut in half with a slit in the tab side. Hair was rolled on them and the ends held together by pushing the narrow end thru the tab slit.

Needless to say the old processing liquid did a number on the rubber and the smell was just horrible.
It used to leave teeny bits of rubber in my hair after the curls were unfurled.

Thomaston, CT

Never had a perm until i was an adult....I had braids as well....loved them when i was jumping rope!

Doesn't sound like a pleasant experience, Jo

Fredericton N B, Canada(Zone 4a)

I too was the youngest of 5.My mother was 43 when I was born. One of my older sisters...13years..felt responsible for me until the day she died.Told me how to dress..bring up my children..and act.She was an unmarried social worker ....named Woman of the Year in Sandiego.California.( excuse the spelling I'm a Canadian!]She had all the answers.Still mothered me when I had grandchildren.Wish she still was here.Joy

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Toni home perms - OMG! I used to get them done with pin curls - not rods.
My hair stunk for at least a week! Hated them but with three little girls - my Mom needed a break from putting all our hair up on rollers every night.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

We only had curls for fancy company or a special event. As my braids got longer the festive doo was to put my braids on top of my head.
In the pix below I am sitting at the far left with a pet fawn we found. My little sister is standing and the boy is a neighbor.

I was just wondering if Gen. Petrayus will appear on Burn Notice?

Thomaston, CT

Jo, I love that photo!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I do, too. Your braids are a very pretty design. If I remember correctly my mom only pulled mine up in a ponytail so tight my head hurt.

I like to watch Burn Notice.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Great photo Jo!!
My Mom took and made a ponytail tied it up with the elastic that had "marbles" on both ends. Then she would braid it and wrap it in a pug on the top of my head so it looked like a bird's nest with eggs. :)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Love the photo too Jo!

Long hair too but no braids, I don't think my mom new how but I remember the tight ponytail with the marble ties too. If she didn't use them it was a rubber-band, then she would be complaining because it was stuck in my hair!

South Hamilton, MA

medium length hair. braids only in very hot weather. Never learned to braid myself, except lanyard.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Didnt you all with braids just know what kind of a mood your mom was in by the way she brushed your hair for braids or pony tail?
The elastic with marbles things weren't invented when I was 10 years old. Just rubber bands and when they became coated with hair and broke it was the end of the world.

Thomaston, CT

Oh, yeah....my Mom yanked...also had rubber bands, then she would tie ribbons over them....I usually lost the ribbons by the time I walked to school!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ribbons were a luxury in post depression era but we did have them for church and special events.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My mom yanked, my dad always carefully brushed out my many snarls

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

mom had our hair cut short. didn't know how to braid.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

My Mom used to send all three of us girls to the barbershop with a note and money to get our hair cut.
Strange but true.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

My mom was "forced" to have long hair as a kid so she "forced" me to keep it short :( Good thing the Dorothy Hamill cut was in when I was in 3rd grade

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

As I predicted the other day, the Elmo accuser who recanted got a nice 125K settlement.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

It sure made for a short news story.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I had long hair with pigtails on each side. Mom yanked my hair, I cried, so she cut it into the 'Dorothy Hamill' style. I don't ever remember my father combing my hair.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I come from the late 30's and 40's.Men went to work and didnt have much to do with the children except discipline.
Thank gawd for the late 60's and 70's when they encouraged to be honest and act on their feelings.

My mom threatened to cut my hair because I didn't keep it combed. My dad liked it long so that is why he would do it for me.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Is your hair curly?Deb?

Thomaston, CT

My hair is straight as a stick....I blame the braids!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

No wonder they had no answers his doctor was out of the state...sheesh...supposed to see him today and MAYBE do the biopsy tomorrow

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

My hair is wavy, gets snarls easily.
Hope all goes well Jen

Thomaston, CT

My brother & I took Mom to the doctor's today....the first thing Doc said to me was ," What did you do to your hair....next time it will be a crewcut!" It's short, but I didn't need to be reminded of that....my hairdresser seems to be losing it.....
