Good news for Sampson...you too Memory!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I've used the prong collar on Jerry. Worked at first, but he got used to it pretty quick. Doesn't seem to phaze him at all not, not unless I jerk it really hard, and that's hard on my wrist and arm.

Best thing that works on him is the electronic training collar, like the one Jen provided the link to, but a different brand. He behaves so well with that on, but batteries have to replaced all the time, about every 2-3 weeks, and they are about $5 for 2, which is what it takes. Jerry will walk fine, but is bad when other dogs are around, like Winston. Hard to control then, but not with the traing collar on.

Yay for Sampson!

Great news, Memory.....a man was walking a German Shorthair down at the dam today with a training collar on....she stayed right by her owner's side, even though Suey was straining the leash to get close to her.....

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Jerry will stay right by my side with his training collar on, also.

Jen and Karen, how do they work? Do you use it as correction?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

You use the collar whenever you want him to do something whether coming to you, just sitting down or in correction for doing something wrong, but better to be preemptive

This is the training we went thru
5 commands ONLY
sit, down, off, come and place
That's the words Wall-e was trained to use, you should always pick command words and stick with just those words

anything you don't want the him to do is "off" whether he's jumping or even pulling you constantly tap the button and say "off"
when there's a problem of going after another dog when walking by you constantly tap the button saying off, off, off at the same time

The dogs that are in advanced training will even turn their head away from dogs as they are walking by, as if they are stuck up and ignoring that dog, it's the funniest thing I've seen

"Place" is when basically a stay command but will have them place to an actually spot, they use platforms in training in a range of sizes

I was walking with Suey one day, & approaching us was a family with a huge Rottie...unleashed.....thought i would pass out, but the Rottie walked by without even looking at us....guess he must have had on a collar like that....

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Jen for your info. I'm looking into a few different ones.
I've seen a few people walking very large dogs with no leashes and the dogs never even wavered from the owner. Often wondered how they did it.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I didn't go through any professional training to learn how to use the collar on Jerry. I've mostly used it for correction. I had already done some training with basic commands before getting the training collar. He knew the commands, but was responsive to them only about half the time. I was getting frustrated, so decided to get the collar. One of the best things I ever did.

Now when I take Jerry for walks off leash (yes, I can actually take him walking off leash!) I can let him run ahead, and when I say "here" or "come on", he usually comes running right back. If he ignores me, I give him a tone correction, which consists of a beeping noise. He knows it'll be followed by a stimulation correction if he doesn't respond to the command. I rarely have to give him the stimulation.

When I'm walking him on the leash, I basically do the same thing to keep him from pulling. Also keeps him from getting too excitedover other dogs, as well, and keeps him from jumping on people, which he loves to do and loves to ignore me if I don't correct him.

You all know I got a job. Anyway's I came home Sunday & Jim said "Molly is not right, she has the Shivers" We discussed all possibilities. I was very scared. I came to the point she got posioned or hurt. It was SUNDAY afternoon & a vet visit was on the table. arghhh 3 to 5 hundred bucks, but it was on the table.

I watched her, finally I gave her an asprin. 1 hour later she was back to Molly's self.

I asked Jim all questions, did she leave the yard? NO, Did she get into the garage with stuff, NO. Did she get hit by a vehicle, NO. Then Jim said he was driving & they both saw a dog & got into a dog fight in his truck.

I think she went into "shock" and probably pulled a muscle & got her ego hurt. She is fine now but I did not sleep Sunday night.

must be something in the air Sherrie.. Jily & Lily beat the heck out of each other over the weekend .. Jily's leg was bleeding.. but stopped fast.. I put some bedaine on it.. she is ok now..

hope Molly is ok now.. hugs

She is fine or would of been at the vets

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Glad Molly is okay...sometimes when Abby gets the rotten end of the fight she gets the shivers too for a while.

Ordered a E collar today with both static and vibration. After a horrible walk yesterday and an even worse one today, we almost got hit by a car I've had enough. Will start on the vibration only for a while and hope I don't have to use the static. I have to try something. If I see another dog I try and turn and go another way, today I had no choice but to walk by. Winston went nuts, the prong collar had absolutely zero affect on him :-(

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Good luck with it Ronnie

Glad nothing serious with Molly

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Hope that e collar works a well on Winston as it has on Jerry. That's been the best thing ever for him.

Sherrie and Allison, I'm glad both your dogs are fine. Jerry and Patches got into it once over some leftovers that I put in one of their bowls. I thought they'd be able to share. Boy was I wrong!

I took Jerry for a nice walk art a huge wildlife management area very close to me that I haven't been to before. Went with my nephew and friend Gretchen. What a nice place that is. It's over 2000 acres. Jerry had a great time, and got to do a lot of running around. He was very well behaved with the e collar.

I forgot to add a photo from that walk the other day.

Oh, handsome boy, Jerry! Ronnie, I had a few awful walks with Robs like that....only it was the people he wanted to get at, not the dog! Sherrie, Suey gets the shivers if she hears gunshots....hunting all around us the past month, the poor dog is a wreck! Allison, glad the girls are OK.....you never know what sets them off....Suey attacked Garret's dog, Ollie, a few months back....he's twice her size....no blood, but lots of snarling!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good luck Ronnie!
Great picture Karen, with 2000 acres ,me thinks Jerry was a happy boy!!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

He so handsome Celeste, so is Josh!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Cyrus is a big baby, Celeste. He sure is a beauty. I forget, did you say he was part wolf? Right now I'm reading a book called party wild, the story of a woman who raised a wolf dog. Really good book so far. True story.

Karen

South Hamilton, MA

Cyrus has really grown.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone, he's a big baby.
Thanks Ronnie, I think he's handsome to but you know how that goes.
Karen, he is part wolf, sounds like an interesting book. :)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, I think you would like it.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

yesterday both cats claimed my lap at the same time. no cat fight! I'll post a pic later.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

always great!!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

these 2 are almost never this close. I usually get nasty looks when one wants the lap and the other is in it, lol!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL!

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

Cat's are certainly different. I love how, every once in a while, they all have to change where they sleep for no apparent reason I can see.

I guess I now officially a dog butt scratcher now, at least a according to Bear. At least once a day I have to scratch - rub his back above his hips. I know I've become well trained.

Am I the only one that worries about their dog during deer hunting season. I took a walk out back this after noon, but I didn't let Bear get very far from me because even though it is our own land, and I know who should be hunting there there is nothing to stop from someone wandering onto it from either side. Give the fact that he is big and brown I worry about the hunter that works on the principle if it's brown it's down.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

If you have hunters in the back should both be wearing that bright safety clothing

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Doug, my dogs late dog Buffy loved being scratched there. Be safe.

Sandy made strange bedfellows at my house. I have never seen these two so close together.

For some reason that link doesn't work

Thomaston, CT

No, I couldn't get it either......Doug, be sure Bear has a blaze orange collar during hunting season.....Memory, looks like an uneasy truce!
