FRANKENSTORM CHECK-IN THREAD

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

glad you are ok Elsie... and have your power back.. yeah I am a k-cup snob already.. I will deal with an inferior coffee in an emergency like that.. but if I don't have to.. why

:)

the small generator we have struggles with the machine.. not sure which would get damaged the coffee maker or the generator.. but want to avoid either being fouled up

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

"We're alive and well. We only lost power over Monday night but Tuesday the computer was dead - I didn't know it and figured we had just lost cable. So I waited, like a good citizen, figuring I had the least of any problems until I called the cable company and they told me my computer was dead as did my computer guy. Bought a new laptop today and it will be ready to pick up tomorrow. Whew!

Lots of trees down in our area so lots of chain saws going from 7 AM to 6 PM!""

Anyone in Jersey near Bricktown?? That is where my cousin is staying with her son. She lost her house in the storm and literally watched her car float away. She can use help.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Weeze lives in Brick

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Victor, I have power and water. She can come for hot showers, laundry, food, coffee etc. If she has no transportation, we can go get her.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wish I was closer Victor.. not sure I can help with this storm coming

New York, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the update on Pirl!

We lost power in the storm and still don't have it back -- staying at a hotel tonight and tomorrow to avoid the nor'easter. All safe and sound, including family on Long Island.

Are there any threads talking about what to do when your garden has been under 5 feet of salt water? Is anything coming back next year besides (possibly) my rosemary? Our downstairs apartment will need to be emptied out and the walls stripped; will I need to do something similar in the garden?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow I have no idea.. will get my google on if no one knows

South Hamilton, MA

Plants are tougher than you think. Glad the piel iw reall all right, if you can say that a dead computer is all right.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

dawnsharon.....I am sure someone discussed it when Katrinia hit LA, MIss, and Texas. Just do a search on the topic on the Texas Gardening thread for starters.

So glad Pirl is safe and OK. Sorry for all the problems up there, my heart goes out to you; and my money to Red Cross. Pray all of you get electricity soon.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Gypsum binds with salts and makes them unusable in soils; it was heavily used in SC after Hurricane Hugo. Because I live on a salt marsh, and my soil is salty, I incorporate plenty of it whenever I plant anything. It has the additional advantag e of adding calcium to your soils without changing the pH like lime would. This is a good thing as it makes other nutrients more available to the plants.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

good luck to everyone that is in the storms path today

Dawnsharon, I used to live on an inlet off the Peconic Bay on LI, and had high water cover my yard- and gardens- periodically from Nor'easters. It would come up on one high tide, the wind wouldn't let the water go out, then it would come up higher on the next high tide, just like Sandy. Locals said to water with fresh water to rinse out the salt. If there was enough rain, that would take care of it, otherwise I ran my sprinklers as soon I could after the water went down. I never lost trees, shrubs or perennials, except for once some recently planted that were uprooted by the currents. Even those I re-planted and many made it.

Good luck!

Pam

So glad to hear others have been checking in and that they are safe. Take care all of you during the Nor'easter and be safe! Eleanor

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

the first time my garden was flooded by saltwater, i couldn't believe how many plants came back fine that shouldn't have....even potted begonias weathered the salt.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, all. A subsequent message from the family said they are just looking for financial hep from the family right now. I appreciate your support!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Weeze not sure if your cell is working but I heard you need to evacuate .. Bring the fur babies by me if you need somewhere to go .. Randy is home

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh no!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Left her a voice mail on her cell too .. Very worried

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Storm did not hit there yet, correct?

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

My recommendation is to buy a Dietz lantern. Even though they are made in China they seem to be better made than the cheap knock offs. We have a Dietz that hangs on a bracket in the kitchen. I have keep it burning all night so that if you have to get up and do something you have light. W also have generic glass table lamps. I've had those cheap cast brass lamps leak right through the brass!

This thread talks about used lanterns and what to watch out for.

This is just a reminder that you can burn gasoline or Coleman fuel in a wick burner without disastrous results. I've burned lamp oil and kerosene. Lamp oil smells better. Everyone in the storm area has my best wishes.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

UGH, now our dryer is acting up, something's burning, hubby took it apart and didn't find anything, getting a new one just to be safe(I hate appliance shopping)

Kids have an honor roll assembly today hope the roads aren't that bad later

Still nothing here yet

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My dishwasher crapped out a while back. Will have someone look at it.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

get her fixed.. LOL

looks like a blizzard out now.. not sticking yet but I came home anyway.. 2 degrees colder and we are in trouble

South Hamilton, MA

I don't think that the snow will stick very long even in NJ. Certainly a pest while driving though.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

and for those of us with sloped driveways.. parking is an issue.. we once had the truck slide out into the road while we were inside.. neighbor knocked to ask us to move it.. UGH

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh geez

Light snow here

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

grass is covered already

Thomaston, CT

Glad to hear that many are OK after the storm...my stepdaughter got her power back just in time for this mess which is hitting us now.....brought my Mom to my house once again....forecast is for a changeover to freezing rain tonight....that can't be good on top of all this snow :>(

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

they salted my road.. will be hard to see what the real world looks like

South Hamilton, MA

There is little if any rain here. High winds & 37°.

We've got a dusting of snow and some wind. At least the snow will cover the leaves I haven't raked up.
