FRANKENSTORM CHECK-IN THREAD

Thomaston, CT

Great knowing everyone came through... loss of power is very annoying, loss of life, something else......

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm glad to see so many of you checking in - many thoughts are with you as you deal with the aftermath of "Sandy."

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hope Pirl is ok.. Thanks for popping in to check on us

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thoughts and prayers go out to those hit hardest by Sandy. We had some rain and wind but no major damage or loss of power. Eleanor
p.s. I do check up on you guys once in a while and hope those who haven't checked in are OK!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Glad to see you fared pretty well, Eleanor

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm here! I'm sorry I didn't get to see this thread till now. All is fine. The storm practically went right around us. We had high wind gusts and spitting rain, on and off lights, but never totally lost power. I went outside this morning to walk the dog and found a twig in the yard. That's it. Considering myself very lucky. Then I went out and gardened. Planted a bed with irises, sedum, geraniums and lots of daffodils. It's been more than a year since I last dug in the dirt. It was great! The dog ate grubs. Ick!

Thank you Celeste for your kindness and love!

Harper

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for this thread, Celeste. We are fine here. I thank God for keeping us safe, and for keeping our house safe from damage. We lost power several times briefly, and then once for about an hour our so. I did some reading by candlelight then.

After the first time the power went out, I couldn't get my computer to start back up again. I'm thinking it's either a virus our my hard drive has crashed. Anyhow, I'll have to get it fixed soon. It's a lot slower to get things done on my phone.

Anyhow, sounds like everyone it's ok. I hope all of you who are without power will get it back soon.

Where I am there was a very little wind and no rain until this after noon. I woke up to bright sun light which I didn't expect.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

We had bright sunlight here, as well, after a little rain. Then it clouded up and rained off and on, with a couple good thunderstorms.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm so glad everyone is checking in with good health and not much in the way of damage!!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Power is on at WORK but not at home. 71% of homes in Bridgeport do not have power - including me and the cats. The cell towers are down - so no communications. (I read a book by flashlight.)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hi, 'visiting' from Mid Atlantic forum...Glad to hear so many of you all are OK if chilly and dark. We are amazed there was less damage than expected here, and happy that if we overprepared, that leaves more ice, generators, linemen, tree trimmers, etc for you good people.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the concern, Sallyg. Glad to hear you got less damage than expected. I have a few cousins and uncles and aunts in your area, by the upper part of the Chesapeake Bay, and they made it through fine, too.

Memory, I hope you get your power on soon.

YAY we have power and I can get warmed up! It came back on this morning right after we hooked up an iverter battery for the fridge. We were just about at the end of our cold in the fridge.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yankee Cat, we have heard little of Conn storm damage..Wonder why? We know you all were hit pretty hard. Long Island. too. (Pirl how are you?)

Luvs, that's great news. Seems we down here didn't get as much predicted devastation but we did get a lot colder! Pixie, I'm jealous...pretty wierd when Maine is warmer than dc.

All in all I hope that each of us is cared for in our needs the way those nurses cared for the NICU babies they had to evacuate from NY hospital. And all of us have multiple personal experiences of neighbor/stranger helping neighbor/stranger.

Has anyone heard from Pirl at all?

Thomaston, CT

Someone in Alaska did....she's fine.....LI was hit very hard....my stepdaughter in Commack won't have power back for days....lots of trees down.....

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh good!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Glad you have power Ronnie .. Still in the dark here.. Going to be a while yet .. There is a tree hanging on the wires around the block from us .. Looks like a war zone out there.. Someone from town said we might not have water soon .. Might run out of diesel fuel to run the town pumps

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

We had no damage here.Just hard wind and driving rain.
I confess I didnt read all posts but have been thinking about Pirl.
I google earthed her town and its on the outer tip of LI on a peninsula so there is a large bay on the sount and the Atlantic ocean and Conn. shore to the north. It doesnt look good as far as I can tell.

The worst of the storm hit NJ shore and lower Manhattan but we all know that by now.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Allison I hope you get power soon, do you have a well? A lot of the areas around here are still without power and will lose water too. There are quite a few businesses still down. I'll need dog food soon and the place I get it is most likely out of power. It's a home based farm so I am hoping they stocked up and are open.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

there are still people just east of me with out power. I think it'll be awhile for everone.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

My sister in Virginia emailed that I should have power back by Monday.

Thomaston, CT

Still hoping my Mom's power comes back soon......glad there was no damage in your area, Jo.....

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I feel a bit guilty when I see New Jersey shore. My MIL used to live in Toms River and we took the kids to Seaside public beach 40 years ago.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Yankeecat, et al, most of the power outages here have been restored, so all those out of state crews are heading up to NJ, Philly and beyond as well as some of our Maryland crews.

Also wanted to pass on something Holly shared on our MAF thread. She uses her solar garden lites for bathrooms, hallways, etc. She says they are long lasting and when the sun is out can be recharged.

Glad to have word from GE and about Pirl .

Luvs, hope you are able to procure food for your danes!

Fuel to keep those generators running is a superhuge problem especially for the water. And why are huge generators at hospitals "failing" after so few hours of emergency use?

(Reminding myself that anger is part of the grieving process)

Hope the jet stream stays down here a keeps you all up there warmer.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Coleup wrote "Reminding myself that anger is part of the grieving process". Me too....Can't tell you how many times I've yelled @ my brother for leaving me here in the Maine winter with NO HAIR!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Just read......
New Jersey favorite son Bruce Springsteen, along with Jon Bon Jovi and Sting, will headline a benefit concert for storm victims Friday night on NBC television, the network announced.

THANK YOU MUSICIANS!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yeah fuel is a big problem .. We have city water but the guy up the street on the town council .. Said they are going to run out of diesel soon that power the town pumps .. Not going to last forever

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

ge, Louc from Texas says she can't stop weeping when she sees images on the news of the shore. One reporter last night couln't help but say how like when he covered Katrina this devastation is...

Some of us who have experienced first hand disasters local or wide spread must all have a bit of post traumatic stress and flashbacks and that 'survivor guilt.' One lady wrote that it has taken her almost two years to not feel the loss of several big old trees in her yard and has just begun to realize the new gardening possibilities that has opened up for her.

lol Pixie!

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Alison, they refuel planes in mid air ...

if we citizens are suggested to be ready for up to a week of power outages, weren't local municipalities reguired to do at least the same?

I guess we need back ups to back ups and more redundancy in some systems.

Personally, I'd like fuel that I can store that doesn't go bad and kill generators, furnaces, and cars.!

And, at the risk of offending someone "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down."

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Just checking in real fast. We had power thruout the storm but no internet or phone, today we have phone but lost power a high line came down, eta on repairs not till Nov 9th! Lost a big tree branch but no house damage. Generator up and running for now

We had loaned out our generator to our pastor cause they had lost power right away and we never did, so hubby had to go out and get another one, good thing we have an account at electrical supply house

Hubby said people are like animals out there, very rude and nasty cutting people in line, can't figure out how to work a 4 way stop when traffic light is out, hearing reports on radio of looting etc etc.....

Thomaston, CT

Folks are very frustrated....can sympathize.....I cried when I saw power trucks on the road below me, but they were not the crew to fix my lines...also remember smelling like gasoline from the generator all the time....

What I see on the news is: NJ is not going to have lights, gas for weeks. Some parts worse then others. The coast is never going to be the way it was. NY is going to take some time especially with the subway system.

So much is happening I cant keep up with it. Even when they say the water systems are running the water is not safe.

BOIL YOUR WATER.

If you cant boil it, put 8 drops of chlorine in per gallon.

good idea with the clorine.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Ronnie, glad you got your power back and didn't lose anything in your fridge.

Allison, it just occurred to me that you had all those Halloween decorations out. I was wondering how all that stuff fared in the storm or if you were able too get it all taken down before it hit.

Wow, so much devastation from this storm. The more I hear, the more it hits home on how bad it really is.
