Indian Hawthorne branches turning brown

Saint Marys, GA

My indian hawthorne (planted 1 year ago) is very healthy looking ~ flowering, no spots on the leaves ~ and yet, some of the bushes have indiscriminate brown branches. They are not broken branches, so I don't know what is causing this. Has anyone seen this before? Any advice?

We have had a huge amount of rain this summer. I don't know if that is a factor or not.

That's an odd looking Indian Hawthorn (the leaves look too small). It reminds me more of a Japanese Holly or a dwarf Viburnum obovatum. Anywho... I'd make sure that the mulch isn't piled up too high in the center and/or that the area drains sufficiently because it looks a lot like stem rot.

Also, I included a close-up of an indian hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis species) to show you what a standard one looks like.

You're right, I just pulled the landscaper's plans and they are viburnum 'whorld class'. I appreciate your input and will give it a try.

I haven't heard of that cultivar but the species is the same as the one I guessed at. Good luck with the mulch removal. Hopefully it will stop the browning once the crown of the plant dries out.
