Northeast Gardening: Coffee Break # 85

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Heehee Yes, I just got up and measured. From the top of my knee to fingertip is 7". I have long legs.
Back in school I thought I was daring when I wore a skirt at that length. That was in college, cuz no way were my folks gonna let me out of the house like that.

In going through a box that my mom had I found info about my grandmother's father. A relative has been doing a family tree. My mom had gotten info together, but never sent it to this relative. I found her phone number by googling her name and called her. She was tickled pink. I am in the process of updating info. Looking forward to finding new family. Never knew much about Nana's side. I only thought she had one brother-turns out there were two. One drowned when he was helping with logging and floating the logs. His body was found 6 weeks later. That was just before the cousin I called was born back in 1935. I also found a picture
album and a photo of my great-grandfather.

Edited to add. RD, I guess it just wanted an education too

I will be doing a followup DNA test with Nat Geo. Will give lots more info than the first one I did. Will now see both maternal and paternal lines, many additional markers, even how much Neanderthal is in me! Grunt!!!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

We could have told you about the Neanderthal with out a DNA test! :-)

Going to Cooperstown in a few weeks. Anyone ever been??

Yes, back in the late 80's early 90's.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

We went a couple years ago for a hall of fame game, and many many years ago to the rest. I don't remember much, other than it was one of our few family vacations.

Thanks so much, you guys are the best♥ Domenic is home and doing fine. He will be sore for a couple of days but some pain meds should help him along. Felt so good to be able to hold and help comfort him in the recovery room. I am truly blessed!

South Hamilton, MA

I just got on this thread so I will add prayers for Celeste's brother & hope that he can stay pain free.

Rosemary, as much as you love your kids, it's nice to have hubby to yourself (as well as the house).

Just got through watching tonight's US. open. The 2nd set took over an hour to play. I heard that this afternoon's match was long as well. I hope the guys get plenty of rest tomorrow.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Behind here....glad Dominic came through with flying colors Ronnie!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Friend from school was at the US open last night

I really haven't seen any news on the clean up from this hurricane on mainstream media so glad I get updates from the president of a charity I support

Here's part of his message

I’m in East Plaquemines Parish, and the damage here is just absolutely devastating. This was truly a historic storm, flooding every home along an 18-mile stretch. Residents are still without power and have no access to running water, the air is thick with the smell of mold from flooded homes, mud covers nearly everything and there’s an overwhelming heat index of 110 degrees. In short, the devastation here is far worse than reported

What had happened was this...

Plaquemines Parish which is on the east bank of the Mississippi River was still suffering from the BP oil spill, and a large percentage of them are still out of work because of it. They said “The oysters and shrimp have not come back, and many fishing families have suffered fiscal meltdown as a result. "
Then came Isaac. The new levees in St. Bernard stopped flooding into that parish, but the new high walls “funneled all that water into Plaquemines and ruined everything.”
Every single building has been flooded—either ruined or severely damaged. There are boats and burial vaults strewn helter-skelter all over the road and sloped alongside the levy. There is a sweet rotten smell that covers the soggy land and seems to seep into your pores.

Do you see that? EVERY building!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw some of that on the news, & it looked devastating....but to hear it from someone there trying to help....how much more can those poor folks endure?

South Hamilton, MA

Who or which organization from the gov't is supposed to be helping.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mainly FEMA, I would guess.

South Hamilton, MA

Hope better than last time.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

At least the shelters are now taking pets. Really FEMA couldn't do a WORSE job than last time!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

So hard to dip in and try to catch up.....have missed keeping up with everyone. Will be back online more soon. Celeste, Dear, you are still so in my prayers, and I also pray for your peace, more memorable moments with your dear brother and Brian's comfort.

Rosemary, I hope this new phase is a nice one for you and your husband. It must be hard to have 3 leave all at once, but just think how fun it will be at the holidays when they come home and they no longer have bedrooms now that you've made them all garden storage rooms! LOL Poor Cliffie, must be such an adjustment for him to understand.

Jan, that is so cool about your newfound family!

Ronnie, good to hear Domenic is doing well.

Personal trainer, huh, Jen.....yikes, aren't they really sadists in muscle shirts? :)

Thomaston, CT

Went to the fair today & brought home 1 blue ribbon....for my Morden Sunrise rose....3 reds, & 1 white.....not too bad considering I didn't enter many flowers this year....my dahlias were awful, but there were some beauties entered....anyway, the day was a top ten in the weather dept. So wonderful just to wander around .....

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeay Robin!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Very nice, Marilyn! Congrats!
