Garden pests #2

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I killed 8 of them in plain sight yesterday... can't imagine how many are hiding

Thomaston, CT

Yellow jackets are the bad bugs! would rather have birds in the yard eating bugs.....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

have you tried beer in a bowl?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yum! With Cheerios!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

hope your Brian is feeling better. I was raking leaves out from under a shrub one year and disturbed a giant yellow jacket nest that was partly between the leaves and the ground and in the ground. Thank goodness I wear glasses. I was stung about a dozen times around the face and neck, but my glasses prevented them from coming at my eyes. I am super careful now and never want to repeat that experience. I have also found that if you stay out of the flight path to the entrance of the nest, they will mostly ignore you. I had a nest in a compost barrel one year. they came and went out of one of the air holes on the side. as long as I didn't use the barrel and stayed out of the way of the flight path, we lived in harmony all season. Winter came and they moved the nest and it wasn't there next spring.

Yikes. Feel better, Martha.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i was thinking of brian yesterday when i got stung hiking - no idea what got me other than it hurt like hell for a minute or so and i did a little hopping dance (think indian ritual) with accompaning 4 letter yelping. twenty of those would have really hurt.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Try 51, thats the number of stings all together, he's still itching. :)

Thomaston, CT

Poor guy! Either a small bee or a deer fly...both were on Suey's ears....bit her...she yelped & leaped straight up, all 4 feet off the ground.....I seem to get stung every year....cannot imagine 51 stings!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

51 wow!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL, I felt better some 4-5 years ago. my run-in with the yellow jackets is ancient history, and I learned from my crisis.

Heard Jeff holler as he was mowing out front, then heard him clomping up the deck and into the house. He got it on his knee. Just one and I said, just imagine 51 of those. He couldn't fathom that idea.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I think Brian learned something too....he has a high respect for the lil devils. :)

Unfortunately our bee problem is bigger than we thought. We have already destroyed 5 nest and have counted at least 15 more of various kinds and sizes.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

same here on the nests - have not gone out to remove any yet - is brian free? :)

Thomaston, CT

Time for an exterminator?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL! No he is not!!!
I picked up some hornet/wasp killer. It will jet-spray up to 27 feet away. :)

Thomaston, CT

I have that as well....had problems with wasps in the west windows.....the spray really works...

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i think i need to get some spray - have to check if i have any left - there are only nests here and 2 will be easy to knockout - the one above the second floor in the eaves will be tough.

Thomaston, CT

The spray should get it....don't hang out the window!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

RAID spray only reached 22 ft. this other one was at Wal-Mar, 27 ft ~ 2pk cans for $4.79 I think.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

27 feet is till not far enough if ya ask me!!

Was so leery yesterday opening my compost bin, it's been a while since I dumped anything in it, just kept thinking what if...

Saw these creatures last week, fortunately not in my yard, but they were still creepy.

Anyone know what's going on with my thyme???

Thomaston, CT

No, but my Snow-In-Summer looks the same!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

drought?

Thomaston, CT

Probably, Jumper.....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I need to take a pic of the whole area, there are only 2 patches of brown like that, everything else is nice and full and green

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

My thyme looks like Jumper's. I'm just putting more mulch on the hill above in case it's drought, because the rain just runs off--it comes down so fast.

Spider mites are back on the evergreens, especially the hemlocks. Rain has to stop long enough to get the Neem oil on them. White mildew, I guess, is threatening the little bit of Angelly witchhazel that didn't get broken during the spring storms.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh crud.. forgot to check for sawflys on the twig dogwoods.. need to do that

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

found a couple fall web worm tents, sprayed those suckers real fast!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

thanks.. will keep an eye out for those as well

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

YS was SO dry! Many trails were just powder. Brown grass. Fear of fire.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What were the temps?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That was one thing we noticed all across the country on the train.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lows were in the low 30's. Highs in the low 80's.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What a diff

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes. We usually had the a/c on when we went to sleep. Woke up with it on and the outside temps in the 30's!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow .. would be in shock
