There here!!!! Please tell me how I could see this one !!
Garden pests #2
NOOOOOOO!
I get one every once in awhile.....they do a lot of damage!
I plant marigolds around the garden.....I don't use any sprays, have very few bugs......
Would LOVE that beetle!
Hollyhocks get a hollyhock weevil which causes the damage shown in your picture. My friend gets them on hers unless she sprays the dickens out of them.
Sunday I went to Tower Hill Botanic Garden to attend the New England Lily society show and to attend two lectures on the lily leaf beetle. The first was by a member of the lily society on basic facts about the lily beetle. The second was by one of the researchers from the University of Rhode Island who spoke about their research. She discussed the release program of the wasps. The program is collecting larvae from this area to discover where the wasps have migrated. It was fascinating.
Martha
are the wasp working martha? i assume they do not yet know where they have spread based on your comment. would like to plant some for my wife although not until the beetle has a natural predator
The wasp hasn't made it here yet......I had a lot of lily damage even though I used pesticides....which I hate to do! But now I'm getting chipmunk damage.....3 new lilies eaten by the little pests!
Lilly beetle damage here too this year, I didn't spray soon or often enough.
I had them this year, but much less than two years previously. Last year and this year I attributed the lower numbers to our cold, wet spring that we had. I didn't know about the release in Wellesley until this seminar. The point of sending the larger beetle larvae back to URI is to determine if they are infested with wasp larvae. Unfortunately, I hand picked all the eggs and adults I found and washed off most of the larvae that escaped this and had none to send in. I will certainly do it next year. The beetles seemed to prefer the scented stargazer to the unscented lilies.
Martha
Found a horn worm, am going to have to spray!
Nothing in my veggie garden yet...plant those marigolds!
Robin, I plant marigolds every year on all 4 corners of the garden....didn't this year!
1. & 2.) The dreaded HW
3). Now that it's been very dry, these little ant hills have been popping up everywhere. It's raining today ^_^ FLOOD THEM OUT!
4. & 5.) Told hubby...."Better spray your cheery tree's...it's the 1st thing JB goes for!" He didn't spray...24 hrs later I took these pictures, downloaded them and showed him. He sprayed yesterday. :)
ant holes here too celeste - real pain i have gone through a lot of the ant control white powder stuff
have also noticed a lot of yellow jacket nests - one is in a conifer shrub that i will get some evening that i noticed while weeding, could have been an america's funniest home video episode if i had not noticed
another is in an eve by our office window - was washing windows and had a dozen get in the room while i was cleaning the window under the nest - i was able to kill them all although not before one got me right in the middle of my forehead - did not sting too bad - will have to spray that one too.
ow!
Yellow jackets are awful! Had an underground nest by my compost pile...I poured bleach down into it....
ouch Bill.. makes me happy to have the termix guy come take care of that kind of stuff.. worth the contract!!
Katydid...
awesome shots!!.. never saw one before .. very cool
Yes - Katy. Nice shot!
Cool! Great picture!!
Thanks!
I wondered if it was a Katydid but the long legs through me off.
Great camouflage!
That middle photo is awesome!
neat Ronnie!!!
have only had to yank off one hornworm so far this season, but the mere fact that i've found one has me thinking I must of missed some...not seeing any damage to leaves yet though other than the one that led me to the aforementioned caterpillar. Cucumber beetles on the other hand...these things are driving me nuts. I've never used any pesticides (organic or otherwise) in my gardens in the past, but these darned things have got me re-thinking that stance. Just hand-picking them off in the evening and again in the early morning. I've found that they like to hang out inside the flowers that have closed up. I've seen them on my cukes, pumpkins and squash mainly, and now and then I'll find one on the watermelon plants. Anyone got a quick and easy way to deal with these guys? I'd hate to lose plants to wilt spread by these little punks.
Thanks guys, she ate some morning glory leaves but I still enjoyed looking at her!
YOWSERS!!!!!
OMG
Scary! Dose, I don't have the beetles, but I know the Capt. Jack Dead Bug sprays are organic.....
Yikes!
Scary but such a work of art I think! Haven't had to deal with any of them thank goodness. Just the small yellow jacket ones we catch before they get too big.
Don't hurt the tree getting it out! Macouns are my absolute favorite apple!
They are good, but I think I like Baldwins better.....
