2012 DG Sistah's Gathering at Betty's (Ontario, Canada)

Victoria Harbour, ON

lol.

Now who will go get coffee/donuts before dawn like Norm did..he was such a sweetie, absolutely went with the flow, even when we crafted..that I shall never forget!!!

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Hello everyone!

Jicama (hicama) is awesome! I used to eat it all the time when I worked for a fresh produce distributor, and forgot about it lol

I'm still working on coming but won't know until last minute, court date is on July 20th so we have 6 weeks to go and see what a judge says about my inheritance and paper trail to prove I have it.

Betty that sitting area is gorgeous! I hope Cathy listens to the doc, blood clots are very dangerous and very deadly.

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'll be hoping things change just enough to allow you to come to the Gathering!!! Court date can't come quick enough, I'm sure you to start your new life WITH your inheritance.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Crissy - do you have some Jicama recipes? Or did you eat it raw?

Here's hoping you get to Betty's Gathering!!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

BJ! LIE, LIE, LIE!!!! I remember like it was yesterday, you complaining....oh me, oh my, not enough green beans to cook....what shall I do?????? I said, have them with dip like other veggies and WE DID!!!!! Now FESS UP, SISTAH!!!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

tsk tsk tsk....... BJ, you've been Caught!!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL... Joyce... I thought that would get a rise out of you...

I also remember you and I standing by the green beans and you picking one and eating it... I had never eaten one raw before, so I tried it... AND IT WAS THEN, that you said to put some out to have with the veggie tray and dip...

BUT THEN LATER, I remember catching you at it again... thought no one was watching, HUH?

Yep, just like it was yesterday.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

lol you two!!!
BJ - never eaten one raw before? yikes!! They're good raw!

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

See????? You can teach an old dog new tricks!!!! LOL! They've never tasted better, Brenda!

Lyndonville, NY

The best beans and peas are those snuck out of the garden!

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL... yep... they were very good.

Lyndonville, NY

We have a dog that sneaks the cherry tomatoes....we have to watch her like crazy.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Veggie thief..I so miss having a vegetable garden but when you are only one, it makes no sense especially when I pass a garen center every day..

wonder if yellow beans will be ready by months end??
Strawberries will..desert, strawberry shortcake, my favorite

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - sometimes (or most times) it's less expensive to go to a green grocers for your veggies etc.
Even when you grow your stuff by seed, with the cost of plants nowadays....... , you still add your time, fertilizer, pesticides, buying garden tools, new soil, and soil testing............ I heard it said that you can pay up to $45 for ONE TOMATO!
Sure, sneaking out at midnight to have a tomato feast is great, but who else is raiding your garden?!?! LOL could be bears, deer, your own furries, or your neighbours LOL

Kemp, TX(Zone 8a)

Betty, if I thought they would make it safely, I'd bring you some of these tomatoes that have taken over my fridge.
Don't think they'd let me cross the border with produce, though... and I'm fairly certain they wouldn't make the flight without getting squashed.
So, I guess I'll be putting them up for the freezer instead...

I grow tomatoes because I refuse to pay $3 per pound for them at the store... and because they just taste better from the garden when they're allowed to ripen on the vine. I also like to grow a lot of basil, and when I grow basil near my tomatoes they're even better. I do not try to grow a lot of other things, but tomatoes are worth the effort to me.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I agree, BJ, and if tomatoes grew well in Calgary, I'd have an entire plot of Just tomatoes....... unfortunately they don't grow as well here as my hometown of Winnipeg....... where once it's summer, it's truly summer :-(
nothing better than fried tomatoes on toast....... or a nice warm toasted tomato sandwich!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, was just thinking how wonderful it would be IF we had days such as this for your visit! in the 70's and lovely breeze.
I really should be outside picking weeds but rather busy on the phones so will stay inside until 3pm.

was going to dust LOL but figure I'll wait closer to the gathering..

Checked the phlox but they aren't budding, infact bugs got many so they will not be in bloom, they usually give the most bang for their $$$...if you all like shades of green then there will be plenty of that!

No, can't bring fruit/veggies over but thanks, I'll try to get to the farmers market on the Wednesday.

With Steve and Judy arriving on the Wednesday afternoon I plan to get my groceries done on Tuesday night. kicking myself I didn't get all I needed for spaghetti sauce, could have been cooking it today..big grin, that way if I burn it I have the opportunity of cooking up another batch

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

lol Betty - "opportunity of cooking up another batch" you can come cook for me anytime, m'lady!
Now don't go picking anymore flowers! lol just kiddin'!

Victoria Harbour, ON

omg, lucky I wasn't cooking last night, Kyle dropped in for a visit, of course grandma had something he could help her with , yep that big piece of driftwood..heavier than the dickens but he said we could try..as not to trample the flowers on side garden I went first carrying the lighter end, almost where I wanted the driftwood, lost my footing and fell backwards down the encline and into the grapevine..took me a sec to get my breath back..Kyle had to help get me up lol

Suzanne called a bit after this happened, I was laughing when I told her what happened, she told Kyle he's to use his own judgement and NOT go along with grandma's 'think we could do this?'

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

hmmmmmmmm Betty - how are you this am? stiff and sore I bet....... more than your pride is hurt?!?!

Suzanne's right - you just want to DO and sometimes our best judgement isn't there when we're excited about getting something DONE!

Sometimes my Bob is like that - when he's finally ready to do something, he goes at it full-tilt without thinking about items around him that might suffer from "bull in the china shop" syndrome....... I've opened up tight spaces (he could get hurt in areas too small to move properly) and move breakables when he's working......... no matter what it is LOL

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Afternoon everyone! We are back form the beach, and we had a wonderful time!
Betty, when you place something on the stove, and you have to leave, carry your cell phone with you. It has an alarm clock you can set, and remind you to get back to the stove!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

what a great idea! Betty - you have a cell phone, don't you?

Victoria Harbour, ON

have but never use it..don't like them lol

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

well, maybe you should think about LK's suggestion.......... sounds like a good one, to me!

edited to fix the name.........duh....

Who is Marilyn???? Did you mean Linda Kay?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

DUH on me........ sorry, distracted today.......

Victoria Harbour, ON

Sunshine morning, what a beautiful day...can only hope it's the same kind of weather for your arrival...did my walkabout in the gardens, if looking at the phlox and begging them to be in bloom works then flowers it would be, hoever, won't be this year, wonder where they sell imitation phlox.
As I grin!

I was up early, started spaghetti sauce, meatballs in the oven, I'm looking at what I could do outside this morning but have learned one thing, when you get preoccupied you what you are cooking. Promise to stay right next to the stove...you will know if I listened when spaghetti sauce isn't on the menu. Lol

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

lol you may well grin, Betty - what will bloom, will bloom when others see it. Just imagine all the pleasure you and others in your neighbourhood get all season long....... and your B&B guests! Your garden get enjoyment and love all the time :-)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Yep, how true are your words but sooo wanted blooms, blooms, blooms! Lol

So far nothing burnt, famous last words..well at least Debbie can have some, took hers out before adding peppers. Guess we can just watch her eat!!

Will wait until later this afternoon before cutting lawns, it's quite humid today.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

And don't forget - the Gathering is for them to see YOU in all your "glory" lol When one person hugs another, they concentrate on the hug-ee, not the garden around them, although I think your garden is spectacular in Any state. remember, I only have a 39' x 72' plot, and most of that is taken up by my 14' x 54' trailer..........and of course parking for two lol I so (dare I say it?) envy those with a large yard and garden............
so Betty - enjoy what you have, and all your helpers who work for you on Mother's Day and all those other special and regular days of the year.
I get to garden "vicariously" through Marlene & Wilma's garden, but I can't look out each morning and see it........

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

Betty, I'm so looking forward to doing the "walkabout" with you! I walk the kingdom every morning, and I stole that saying from Don, BJ's husband, but as you know, it really is our kingdom. What time do you usually go outside? Want to make sure I set the alarm on my cell phone ^_^ so I don't miss it!

I've been out since 7:00, first the kingdom walk, and then water, water, water. Everything is so dry and we had a little less than 1/2 inch just last week. Didn't do much good though. The elephant ears are finally starting to pop. Should look good by the end of July when the public pond tour is scheduled to stop here.

Betty, think I forgot to answer your question about your rock the other day. Yours is still perfect, but LK's little one, and Jayes have faded so much you have to know who they belong to ahead of time. :o(

Speaking of Jaye.....has she given up on being with us through cyber space?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Oooh Joyce, I'll have breakfast made before most get up for the walkabout! I'll take orders night before and rising time . Don't laugh, Judy wants back bedroom with balcony, I had said seeing they arrive first the get choice of bedrooms, so back bedroom it shall be and along with having a deck, get served coffee..lol

The walk around won't take long Joyce, one thing I do have is plenty of little seating areas!

Just started to cut grass, neighborhood was so quiet I didnt dare start my lawnmower or weeder, minute I heard someone else start their I'd be running for the lawnmower...no sooner did one start did 4 or 5 more start..guess everyone was thinking same thing!

Because of the heat I decided to break cutting areas into 8 as to not overdo..Lordy I'm up to 2

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

We're hot today as well. 91.6 but feels like 106. Whew. Trying to do shady things!

I like to do my walkabout with a cup of coffee....today it was 4 cups of joe! Well the last one was sitting on the new swing with Pop.

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

LOL,seems there are several of us with the same habits. I so enjoy my walk around with coffee each morning..well when it is pouring. Joyce I sure wish I could send you a little of this wetness. I guess having habit alike is what draws this group together so much. I am still sobbing because I can't make the gathering once again. Wait! maybe that is why it is so wet and not the rain.

My elephant ears are about 8 - 10" tall right now......didn't get them set out due to having to go south right after I purchased them. They are growing in the bag but oh do they look healthy. Might set them out tomorrow. Today I must, repeat MUST clean the fridge!!!

Joyce, enjoy every second with your Dad. I so wish my Mom was able to be up and travel....I miss not having her come to my house anymore.

Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)

I am enjoying him Marion....at 94, I never know if this will be the last Fathers Day together or not. Called DS, Mark, and he and his family will come tomorrow for a meal. Lisa and family are in FL for Jordyn's graduation present...two weeks, first Vero Beach, then Disney. DS, Bill and family can't come.Little DGS, Kyle is getting tubes in his ears next week and they don't want to take the chance that he'll catch anything, because it would postpone the surgery. DS, Kevin and family are living in Texas now, so they won't be here. It will be a mighty small group, but full of love!

Marion, the tree in memory of Ross and in honor of you, (Kousa Dogwood) is looking so good this year. No blooms, but I'm hopeful for next year!

Victoria Harbour, ON

82 and humid..I am just beside myself with laughter..those of you who know my boys know they are forever telling me 'to sit', put my feet up and enjoy!! Say they can't get it through my thick skull that I need down time...so last week Greg and DIL Melanie dropped in, I was in a lounger, drink on the side enjoying the peacefulness of the yard, no plans for entire day! Before leaving they asked what was for supper so up and at it I was to cook for the bunch of them.

Today, I cut a quadrant of grass, made myself some punch, and had just finished posting when DIL Melanie came, all excited, it's large object pick up week, she found a wicker set, no cushions (get where I'm going with this) by the roadside, so off to Orillia she went, bought outdoor fabric and sponge, thread and here she sat asking if we could do a 'together' project. now did they not tell me to sit and do nothing??? Why is it every time I do they find me something to keep me off my fanny!

So wish my dad was alive and Roger..did make a nice tombstone wreath so tomorrow mornimg before the sun comes up I'll be doing a graveyard run..the cemetery where dad is buried you cannot put flowers at all..looks so lonely..so a run to Penetang and Waubaushene is the call of the day..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - why would you need to get up to do cushions? Hand sew them, dear lady, and that would Keep you on your fanny. I did about 32 cushions that way lol
btw - in the "other room" I've started a "Get Fit with me" forum - I can only keep up with it in one room, so if you're there, please join me.... c-mail me for the site

Victoria Harbour, ON

Not about to do that Susan, not when I have a machine that will sew through anything!!

Not about to make this a week long ambition, no time, have enough on my plate..infact my evening ambition was to paint the came on my bedroom stained glass piece..oops DIL IS BACK

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ah well Betty, I tried ......... lol

Victoria Harbour, ON

Know what I'm doing for rest of the evening, yep, I do...

Cushion set for settee and footstool and pillows..Ann is gone home to get her acetate to copy a painting pattern and Melody off the Barrie, Fabricland to get fabric for pillows..

Shaking my head here, it's 5pm and I am taking on a MIL/DIL and friend evening..

What to heck
