She's about to... 66... Spring is here!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I didn't see any on it, but we were on the run most of the time, this is in KayJones back yard in florida

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra beautiful blooms, I love the picture of the sunset I imagine it was way beautiful in real life.

I have a plumeria that is getting ready to bloom, I have been so late getting everything out of the garden room due to the winds, construction, and what ever but it is going to bloom in there anyway in spite of me. LOL

Actually divided a hosta into 3 plants last night, 1 for swap, 1 for mg sale next year, and finally got the biggest part planted, all with name tags....yeah! This hosta has been in a pot for a year if not more...ugh, so I am gaining on my list of stuff to get in the ground by one...rofl.

I got a new arbor recently from a friend who just couldn't find the right spot for it. I have put one of my corkscrew vine seedlings on either side of it. Yesterday I saw one of them sending out its first tendril to start the climb.

How's yours doing FROOT?

Yours Faye?

Interested to know - I am desperate to see the flowers. :)

What beautiful flowers, Debra, especially those captured in the rain.

NICE arbor. The Corkscrew Vine you gave me is growing slow and steady, Manda. Your efforts growing those expensive seeds are paying off. What I'm really impressed with at the moment is the speedy new growth on the Ficus.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Glad Froot - did you snip that bit of stem to encourage new growth?

I have another one I can bring to you at the RU. I was just experimenting when I was pruning one of the ficus here. I can't even remember how I rooted them (!) but it did take a long time.

The corkscrew's runner is going around and around - like it's testing - very cool. There are still things that I wanted to start from seed (zinnias) and it's not too late, but darn it, it's so darn late I want flowers now. :D

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Great arbor, I want a friend like that...rofl. We want to see the flowers also....I hear they smell wonderful and everything I have read is they are hard to get started, you all are doing a great job!

Here is a pic of my furnance grate I put in the potting bench. Now to find the container for underneath with a lid, and get the bench done with the sink.

It IS a nice arbor, and she is an awesome friend. Plus, she is housesitting for her daughter in the next town over so she is essentially gone for the "summer" (next 2 months). I asked if I could use one of her raised beds out back for greens for my iguana and of course she said yes.

But - all she had planted in 2 other boxes were snap peas and they are done. ... so I have 3 more raised beds I can plant in. :D

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

joyce, I can't wait to see the results of your efforts on that potting bench.

Yes! Throw away all sticky notes!

Mandy look at this growing Corkscrew Vine. I'm so happy with it and at the same time I'm afraid I'll love it to death. Any suggestions as to what I do with it now?

2nd picture: Mtn. Cabin Plants Fall 2011 from our dear Amanda. The tiny baby has just decided to grow. That one you brought to us. Love them all. Thanks.

There is one more thing you need to do Debra and that is COME TO MY HOUSE AND HELP ME!!!!!
You have been gone and got all of that done, geehz, I am such a toad...... ;(

Dahtzu, those plants look so happy and healthy, love that brown pot with the succulants in it....

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Ha ha - Debra how long did it take you to type your dang list out for us to read! You could have been sorting jewelry!!! And by the way - are my asters still in your refrigerator!? :P

Faye - Oh my goodness the succulents look awesome and you have them in such lovely pots. I have had really good luck starting babies in those plastic cups - they are the icing containers from the pilsbury cinnabons we have every Sunday. :D

AND - the corkscrew vine looks great. The pot looks too small. Here's what I read on a Q&A thread in the tropical/vine forum - most people who have them in zones where they are not hardy (like us) have them in containers that are at least 20". Whaaaaa? Yes that's what I said. I wondered if it would grow for you in that neat sunroom you have, but it certainly needs some kind of arbor or trellis now. The Plant Files data says it can get to 15' - 20'!!!

First link is to the Q&A thread in the tropicals/vines forum and the second link is to the DG plantfile.

I planted one in the ground on one side of the new arch and the other is in a pot that is about 10".. So I figure I'll bring one in overwinter and see what I can do with the other. They are supposed to develop tuber roots that you can take up and store in the fall like other tubers (?!) but I know next to nothing about that.

Looks like you've got some work cut out for you! The runner on one of my plants got about 4" longer overnight it seems it may be a rapid grower if it likes its spot. I think because it's in a pot the roots prolly hit the bottom and it's free to move about.

Fleabane looks pretty with what - sunflowers? :)

I dug some up from a neighbor's yard. AND I am still waiting for blooms from the 2 plants I grew from your seed last year.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Beautiful pic debra, it was really cloudy here today, but unlike you Debra not a drop of rain, think I have moved to the Sahara. How is your gunnear plant doing? I will admit but don't tell anyone I just moved mine outside this week. It has been growing indoors on the 2nd floor, I let it get too dry and three of the leaves shriveled up...but I think it is ok....it has a new small leaf.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey - speaking of Sahara (hee hee) I think after dumping out the soil I tried to grow the Yellow Zahara Zinnia in one finally came up! I put it where I thought I would like it to grow and it was so kind to oblige me.

Can't wait to see it. It's in max's white and yellow memory garden.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Glad for you AmandaEsq, it will be beautiful in Max's garden....

Glad I could give you a lead in to it...rofl.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Weird, what stuff rings a bell in my head these days. Yeah - THANKS! Have you SEEN them? So cute. It's right here in the very front of my brain so it's dying to come out. Didn't need much help from you:

Beautiful flowers everyone!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Amanda those are Sahara zinnia? Those are just beautiful and such a nice shade of yellow. Gonna have to make a list of things I like for next year...hard to start sounds like....humm, I am not the best with seeds, actually I am being very kind to myself about the seeds I am horrible with seeds.....

Has anyone ever planted a moon vine? I planted one in the city planter that I take care of and I bought some rebar I am going to bend one end of each stick in circles, then layer them in height and clamp them or maybe ....I know get DH to weld them for me, then spray paint.... and use that as a trellis for the moon vine, do the flowers only last one day, does it bloom all over or just on the ends, does it get huge and I will need to trim it? Would of thought I would of looked all that up before I planted it....rofl...you know spur of the moment thing.

Hope it turns out better than my scratching, but get the idea anyway...rofl.

Mandy thanks for the link about the Corkscrew Vine. Now about the ants....do I want the critters in my sun room? I had thought of having it clime a tall wire shelving unit, but antsssssssss...Now what? Anyway, thank you, I'll get it in a larger pot now.
Hugs.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I don't know about the ants. I doubt they will materialize in your sunroom.

I think like peonies, ants congregate on the blooms to ingest the sweet nectar that comes from the flowers. I think that musts be the deal with these plants too. Besides, I think "those people" only suggest that the flowers are pollinated by ants.. The shape of the flowers is such that it's probably difficult nigh impossible for a bee to get in there. small ants probably could - or you'd have to do it yourself. That'll only be a concern if you want seeds from it.

After reading the absurdity about the ants, that's my opinion. I am not concerned.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

I have tried moonvines, but they never do much here! I know they bloom for one night.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

OK Mandy, then I'll not be concerned! Thank you sweet one.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

We got 2 inches of rain and everything survived the 60 mph winds..
I grow all kinds of moon vines, they are good bloomers at night and in the cloudy days. lavender and alba are beautiful...you can keep them over winter and they bloom too if they have light.. i grow mine up sunflowers, poles, string around the back door, and around the patio living wall I build every year,, smells so good with the moon flowers, and the four o clocks and the brugs and daturas... anything that opens at night is okay with me.
zinnias have joined the parade of colors...

Still no rain here, I was hoping, I didn't even cared if it rained on my day off. Yes we have had horrible winds also, my big hibiscus is blown over half the time if not more. Thanks for letting me know about the moon vine, love the pics, mine are white if the tag is right. Night and sweet would be good, it is by the community center and there are night things going on.

Better get out and start playing while it is cool.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Those are so pretty Debra! I need to find more seeds, and give them a try. If you take them in the house during the winter, I take it you have them in pots?

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Love seeing everybody's blooms!

Manda or anybody else, are the first two pics Asclepias tuberosa, Butterfly Weed? They do grow wild on the sides of our roads in small clumps here and there but have never stopped to take a close look at the leaves or blooms, nor have I ever tried to transplant one. Whatever this plant is just popped up in the 'wild child' garden and I really like the Orange tufts. The nearest Butterfly Weed is a good 40-50' away.

Third pic is the Ficus and Corkscrew Vine you gave me, Manda. Both will be moved to larger pots soon, especially that CV already stretching tendrils and growing at an amazing rate! I used the last of my potting soil while covering up seeds in the new L-shaped garden by our front porch that goes out to the road. I did that so I could tell where seeds were planted compared to the clay soil and still have a way to go. Was it here somebody asked to see pics? Anyway, the fourth and fifth ones show how it started and a collection of rocks dug along the way...lol They multiply here like rabbits. Hubby loves Marigolds and wanted an old-fashioned cut garden and accommodated him for giving up a bit of turf he values so much. Waiting now for the annuals show of Zinnias, Cockscombs, Amaranths, Cosmos, and Salvias. Some of the seeds were two years old and thought what the heck. They weren't doing any good stored in my seed bin. I also snuck in a few daisies, morning glories, white and purple moonvines, and purple and white hyacinth bean seeds near the porch.

Happ, I have two shepherd's crooks held together in several places with black wire ties. See pic way up there with the barrel and Hibiscus. The wire tires are virtually invisible when they're cut off close. Just thought using them might work for your project in case you don't want any welding involved and the hooks would be easier to transport.

Ha ha!

Froot - yes the first two pictures are butterfly weed. They have giant tuberous roots and don't transplant well so you're fortunate they came to you.

On the down side, the third pictures depicts a ficus and a Passiflora lutea, not the vigna caracalla.

This is what your V. caracalla should look like. I wonder what you did with it?!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I posted a photo of it in a different thread. This is what one of mine looks like with a long tendril now wrapped around the arbor.

You made me go out with a flashlight and think that's the only vining twining plant you gave me. Darn! I hope I haven't lost the CV and will check again in the morning to see if I missed it.

I'm so tired from weeding and helping hubby move one of those 12' wide portable carports a neighbor gave us. It was an engineering feat on his behalf using one of his tractors, a bunch of cribbing, come-along's and our utility trailer. He rigged the trailer with 4'X4' posts so the weight of the carport was snugged UNDER it instead of on top, which would have been too tall to move otherwise. I would have still been pacing in my neighbor's yard, scratching my head wondering 'how to', but he worked out the logistics in a couple of hours on site, not counting what was in his head ahead of the move. Three neighbors ran interference as he slowly pulled the carport up the road and eventually landed safely home. Our neighbors are the best people! Two of them drove their vehicles in front, one in back and I followed him. These are narrow back roads and all of us had our flashers on warning the crazy folks who fly low pulling boats and SeaDoos. If my panties hadn't been in a wad wondering when the Carport would come off the trailer or been raked in a ditch while passing a boat, the whole thing would have made a comical YouTube video.

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I wonder who in our RU in GSO ended up with the V. c.?

I can't imagine YOU losing track of a plant. Well at least I know it wasn't me, because Faye posted a picture of hers a couple of days ago, and I have the correct number of plants here grown from seed and accounted for in terms of who has staked a claim on them.

I am trying to imagine the sight you describe above, and I have to admit that I cannot. Hope you got a picture! :D

p.s.

EDITED to say - only one of my V.c. planted has started to twine. All others are still only about 4"-5" high with 3 or 4 stems off the central stalk each ending in a compound cluster of 3 leaves. The leaves look like green "spades" like on a playing card. Rounded from the base and pointy at the tip. That's the best way I can think to describe it. The color is a bright green, tending towards yellow. Soft and smooth, no hairs or raised texture to speak of. The sort of fold up at night. Sure hope she turns up.

Oh no, I didn't mean to sound like somebody else took the VC. I knew I brought it home, but yes I've lost plants to neglect, too hot, too cold, too wet, cats, and a host of other reasons some of which have been out of my control.

Is this IT?

Thumbnail by FruitOfTheVine
Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Oooohhh. How sad. Yes, that's it. :/

Sure it has some good roots. Hope she pulls up. :)

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Fruit I can visually see the convoy going down the road...rofl and it is funny after it is over. nerve racking until then and hard on you....

Wire ties is a great idea cause my welder may take too long...like maybe next year or two.....

So hot and humid and dry...not fair be so humid when it is so dry.

This message was edited Jun 17, 2012 2:26 PM

It was a sight like something out of The Beverly Hillbillies...lol That was the first time in a long time we didn't need to buy a new tool, just took a lot of engineering ingenuity on his part and took him back to old times at work. I know what you mean about the welder taking so long, unless its one of their priority projects.

So, Manda, what do I do now? That little gal is going to be lost in a great ol big pot. What about using one just a couple of sizes up for now to get her roots stretching? They're not coming out of the bottom of the starter pot yet.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Suppose to be 98 tomorrow. Sure didn't get much done this weekend. Got some hostas planted Saturday and tagged which was good but that is about it. Today we went to a car show and about melted. Nothing like driving a black 1963 truck with no air when it is hot and humid.....

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

Froot - if it were me I wouldn't take it out of that pot till she was looking better. She'll send out another set of leaves or two I would think. If you think some better soil would benefit her - can't remember what kind of mix is in there. Prolly wouldn't hurt to give her some food.

Best wishes. :)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

LK, yes in haninging pots by the windows they growin winte ( moonvines) Thought I sent you seeds, if not I can..
Fruity, I have a plant that looks sad like that, too much water i guess, but it is going to pull thru, I am sining the pot and all by the arbor.. check the bottom make sure no sluggies hiding in it.. off to work!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Debra, you did send some, but the few blooms I got did not produce seeds, so I lost it!

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7b)

The color of the plant is good - it is supposed to be a lime-y green. I wouldn't over water it though. A little liquid fert and some TLC. Part sun to start - prolly needs some light. You can do it!!! :D

A.

p.s. that Passiflora lutea you've been babying is a native- tough as nails. ha ha!
