Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap III

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Aspen -- of course. They get about 2' fall -- late to emerge, which does make them a little annoying.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Plant files has some good pics and info on Begonia Grandis. Blooms are like those on angel wing begonias.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/261737/

They emerge about when spring ephemerals die back and fill in the empty spots nicely.

They also are great planted in mass say in a shady corner or side of a house or along a fence.. Mine grow under a Blood Good Maple.

Very low maintenance plant for shade of all sorts. Takes surprising amount of sun, is long lived and winter hardyin Zone 6.

Thanks, Coleup -- I should have thought to check PF. When massed, they are really magical, and sparkle from a long way away.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

I'll have to wait until mine bloom so I can pot up and mark the white blooming ones I have for a Fall or next year Spring swap. Happy, should I put your name one one? The whites are slightly smaller and shorter than pinks. If you don't have any planted where their red underside leaves are backlit by the sun please try it as the glow is worth it!

Thanks, Coleup. I actually have some of the whites, but i don't like them as much. There is something about the pink ones that look like fairy dust.....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Rose Campion is Lychnis coronaria. Here's the PF page for the Alpine Catchfly, Lychnis alpina (sorry, had the wrong spelling above) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1907/

I think I lost a post recently, but sorry if this is a repeat LOL

Sally, I found my Hart's Light Purple heirloom iris out there when it bloomed last weekend, so I'm good.

Anybody want some of Hart's cute little "pussytoes" plant? It's a silvery-green groundcover with tight rosettes of leaves, and the blooms are soft like little kitty paws on airy stems (not showy blooms, but really sweet). I have some in a pot that I'm dividing this week...

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Re the Mugwart what if I potted it up?

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

OK! Jill!
Thanks for the pictures!
I am rescinding my rescind......ssgardener--Yooo--Hooo-----I want some!

SS--I would like to have some of your Lychnis after all. Pictures do wonders--no?
Just tell me, please, if it spreads a lot? I plan to grow this in my "YUK" bed.

Rose Campion thrives there--VA Bluebells as well. Evening primroses---Sedums--
a pile of Day Lilies---My Shastas--Heliopsis--AK Daisy--2 Butterfly Bushes--etc...
My Rosemary grows there too. It is getting old!--may dig it up and start fresh.
Can I rent a back-hoe from someone????
That would open up a spot for the Lychnis.....Sounds like a plan!!!! YEAH!

Remember how I always tell you all that for me to get something NEW planted--
something OLD has to go! NO! it is NOT a wedding.......:o)

Chantelle-----
I KNOW how you love fragrant things! The pink rose above is amazing!!!
The fragrance is amazing. IF I still have a bloom next week--I will cut a stem for you to sniff.
Maybe you can search and find someplace that still sells these.
It is an "old" Rose--meaning it is way out of the patent frame. Mine is SO old--and yet it is the
strongest and most disease-resistant Rose i have. I LOVE IT!!!!
Its name is: "Sweet Surrender". Smells like Granny's perfume.....

Pic. #1--taken this week. #2--taken in 2010.

Here is another "OFFER"------
I gave up having to deal with all the dying daff. foliage in my AM bed. So tired of it!
Besides--all the clumps there are old and crowded. I never have room for my annuals
untill this foliage is GONE!!! Well---I made it gone!!!!!

I now have a BIG box-full of bulbs and foliage I dug up. Different kinds of daffodils.
I may regret a No Bloom spring next year--but the deed is done!
All my other beds have Daffs one place or another.

The "OFFER"-----Is anyone interested in taking clumps of all these bulbs??????
I would then bring the BIG box and you all can go at it. Terri---You have SO much room!!!!
Please let me know!

Pic. #3 of the box of bulbs. Shoe on top for scale.....

Ok, Gita! The lychnis alpinas are doing great right now. I just have to wait for things to dry out a bit and dig them out. I've read that they self sow easily, but they don't have invasive roots.

The wintersown balloon flowers are also looking really healthy. They're loving this rain.

I've run out of pots! I'm going to have to use whipped cream containers and old wintersowing jugs to get the last few plants potted. I can't believe I had literally nothing in my yard last year and I have so much to share this year that I've run out of pots! This is so much fun!

Gita, I might be interested in some of those daffodils.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

What is going on!!!!!!

I cannot even send 3 attached pictures any more!
Just lost a whole Post!!!!! Wrote so much---- Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Two of the pics. were with my new Camera--the 3rd one was with the old one.
"old camera" pics always sent 5 pictures--NO problem. Now--I do not know how to make the new one's
less Pixels. Will bring it along to the Swap--and you all can educate me....OR--I could watch the Primer CD's.
Just do not have time right now....

Just wrote you all a long Post--and now it is gone! I quit for the evening......
Gonna go watch TV....

Gita

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Will re-post my long post I just wrote tomorrow.

It would not load 3 pictures! I think I need to do some kind of Pixel setting
on my new camera....Still in "virgin territory" with it.....

Getting close to bed-time.....Good night!!!! Gita

Chantell, Mugwort should be called Mugwort Monster lol

We have it from an innocent plant that came from an organic gardening club member who sold me on its medicinal qualities blah blah blah pull pull pull. The weed is quite invasive and impossible to get rid of the persistent rhizomes once you have it. Mugwort does have an interesting history, but to be honest, I wouldn't even grow it in pots.

Garadore, I'll bring you some Vatican sage =) I just love it too

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

whoops...typo...I meant "gardadore"... sorry about that!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I used to drink mugwort tea when my thyroid was bad.. was the only thing to help me sleep for a few mins rather than not at all.. tastes like poop... but worked.. and I still would not grow it.. LOL

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

too funny onewish! you probably fell to sleep from exhaustion after forcing down the mugwort tea lol

donnerville, we have trumpet vine if you wanted it. That's another invasive one, but the hummers do love it. I'm sure I can pot up one with orange blooms JLMK

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know this isn't a plant but does anyone wear size 6 1/2 wide shoes? I have a brand new pair, couldn't return them cause it was past the return date.

I have several, big, healthy, having bloomed Clivias for sale. $25 each.
Orange blooming---Strap-type leaves. Please D-Mail me if you are interested.....

Will bring them to the Swap if you want any. Gita

honey.. and nose holding couldn't help that tea .... UGH.. just nasty!!!!.. but I really think it helped to clam me down.. was in total overdrive.. would just lie there shaking and pray that I would sleep.. I see it in the garden now and get my revenge for the torture!!!

;)

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

My neighbor friend Cheryl will be coming along. She was at the swap at my place last year, and really enjoyed meeting all of you who were there. I printed out the Haves/Wants list last evening and brought it over to show her - can you believe it was 22 pages long, even with small print WOW! Anyway, she would like the following if still available:

Holly - Marigolds Sweet Cream
Sallyg - Creeping phlox, pink or light blue
Donnerville - Brunera (perennial forget-me-not)
Roses - Lavender
Kubileya - Zinnias assorted colors
Coleup - White old fashioned bleeding heart

She will be deciding what she will bring during the weekend, but a few things she knows she has are:
columbines - I think they are tall pink ones, poppies - orange, and lycoris (commonly called naked lady, magic lily)

Gita, I'm always game for some daffodils - bring them on!

I'm adding jack-in-the-pulpits to my list of "Haves" if anyone is interested...

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Ok, got brunneras for Sheryl.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Gita, I would take some daffy bulbs, please.

Still have to get my friend's haves list sorry everybody.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

aspenhill- yes pink, maybe blue

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I tried yesterday to send you all some pictures--but, only with 3--they would not send.
Thwo ofthem were by my new Nikon camera. One was from my old one.

I tries "sending" 3 times--and after about 5 minutes--it defaulted to the list of all the DG Forums???
Sending even just one picture--seems to take forever to load.
Have any of you had the same problem?
I need to find out how to reduce the Pixels sixe as the pictures are taken. Haven't read the book yet...

Wanted to show you where all those Daff. bulbs were dug up from. Just this ONE bed!
They all still have the leaves attached. May need some "heeling in" to finish the foliage
die off phase.

I will bring about half of them--the box is really full and heavy.

This bed faces E. and gets full sun till about 3PM.
On the left is my Endless Summer Hydrangea. Two perennial, old Ferns in the back,
Some Phlox and the potted up Monkshood (as per Greenthumb's suggestion.
The small Dr. Seuss Brug will ho in center-left. The front will be annuals--usually Imps. and Coleus.

Sending the above took one whole minute to load.......:o(

This is the same bed in July, 2010. Different angle.

I have been having the same problem now & then with photos

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle---

I know how you like fragrant things.

I have that pink rose called "Sweet Surrender". it is an older variety and no longer patented.
The blooms are HUGE! The plant is sturdy and, relatively, disease-free.
The aroma is like Granny's perfume.

You could search and see if any Nursery has it for sale. Then grab it up!

Here is its first bloom a few days ago. The other picture is from May, 2010

There are many buds yet to open. I will cut a stem and bring it for you to sniff.

I stuck a couple cuttings of my golden delicious pineapple sage today.. figured if they are not dead by next week.. they should be good.. LOL

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

flowerjen - purdy shoes - how much of a heel on those? :-)

Terry - I'd LOVE some orange poppys from your friend!! Made my day when I saw that!!

Gita - writing that rose name down...she's beautiful!!!

Wind - do you have one more of the Vatican sage - I can't remember now if I'd begged for that already.

happy - Might I beg feverfew plant if you have one to spare.

Crozet, VA

Alrighty - Got Chantell's request noted and wanted to let Flowerjen know that we were able to dig up a rooted piece of Rosemary for you. Pretty much all that is new here. Can't wait for the shindig.

Got a status report on the space in the car this morning, and John says that all seems to be good. If there are more requests please let me know asap if you can. I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Ruby

Chantell, they have a 2" heel...I love them but can't get my super wide feet into them :(

Thanks Ruby

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantell -- got you down.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

'Sweet Surrender' is my favorite from my MIL's old rose garden... definitely one I want to find again for her. :-)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm closing shop on swap orders -- leaving town in the early morning. See you at the swap!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Safe travels, Happy!!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

safe trip!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill---

Just FYI---When Wallmart gets all their packaged Roses in and has them outside the building on endless tables---
Look there! Many times these older, "out of patent" roses end up places like Wallmart.

My red one is "Proud Land". have had that forever too. My yellow one is hmmmm..."Golden Gate"???
I have an intense orange/salmon one too---called "Tropicana"--but it is in my YUK" bed.
Wanted to dig it up one year to move it--but a couple of inches down--hit a massive Maple root.
So much for that!
Sometimes--I just want to get rid of them all and start fresh. Then--emotions kick in.....

You all know how limited my space in my beds is! SO frustrating!!!! It is a wonder I have--what i have!

None of my Roses are doing the greatest--except the "Sweet Surrender"..
When Black Spot hits--it is "Bye--Bye Roses!!!!
I need to spray my Hemlocks for "Wooly Adalgae"scale--but cannot get ti it....seems whenever i am off--
it is always a windy day--or raining--or rain predicted....

This IS always a stressful time in my "Have-to-do" garden chores....and then--THE SWAP breathing down my neck!!

Cute! One of the Foxgloves I have tagged for Terri has a 6" bloom spike on it. It has blooms! I staked it....

P/U some of the Apple Crates at Costco the other day. Should come in handy!

Anyone know the weather forecast yet for the 19th???? Hope it is a cool-sunny day.....

This Iris is from my deceased Uncle and Aunt's yard. they both died in 1991--and 1993.

I am a "Garden Robber"......

Thumbnail by Gitagal
Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Gita, sadly the extended forecast for the 19th calls for rain, but that can change. We will be prepared with our tent, table and chairs again and the weather will not stop us from having a really good time (same as last time).

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks--Roses!

I may then have to bring my big patio umbrella and stand.....
Woe be me! Something else to take up room on my car--which i KNOW will be
loaded to the hilt as it is.

Lets hope the garden gods will intervene! Gita

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita -- that iris is beautiful!
