Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap II

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

No, mine has REALLY thick stems, like maybe an inch or two in circumference, and has pretty roundish leaves. I'll try to take a pic...

btw, that Angel Wing is soooo pretty! Honestly, I've never met a begonia I didn't like. If I let myself, this could become a serious obsession...

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Yes it sure could. Only reason I don't have a ton of them is that I haven't had good luck growing them so I am hesitant to take cuttings any more or spend the $$ on them.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Gita & SS - I say yes please!! :-)

Regarding the Tovara: It is Persicaria Virginiana 'Lance Corporal', http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53502/.

I got it maybe 15 years ago from Margo Reed, a serious daylily person. I asked for it from her garden when I was picking up some daylilies from her. And I have given it at swaps.

That being said, I would no longer wish it on anyone. It becomes very invasive -- self-seeds all over the place. It gets in the lawn. It travels all over the yard. It didn't happen immediately, but now I can't get rid of it. After a year or two, its roots become substantial and it is hard to pull out. It hides in pots. It sneaks into things

Sorry to be Debbie Downer this morning.

Bec----

Just clarifying here.......
You say "yes" to all the houseplants I listed????? If not---tell me which ones you would like.

Thanks. Gita

Buttoneer, how tall does that miniature Solomon's Seal get?

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Just put some more "Cardinal Climber" seeds in. The ones that I had going (before DH forgot to water them while I was away) had such beautiful red flowers on them already. I found more seed and might have some to bring to the swap after all.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I'd really like the Ostrich Fern if one is available, Buttoneer. I'll go out today and get some variegated Hosta for you.

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Hey, Happy,

Thanks for the report on tovara from one who knows the spreading IP (invasive potential) of this plant! I try to give references to plants I offer to swap so every one can do their garden homework and not be swayed by a pretty face or my experience with plant.

Yes, it seeds freely (aka jumpseed!!!) thus the recommendation by some to cut off flower spikes before seed is ripe (two weeks? three?)

The one I have and you have referenced as 'Lance corporal" is a native plant in this area.

One advantage to this pop up anywhere plant is that the new babies that have reseeded can be easily identified by the dark chevron stripes on even the youngest leaves. Pot up or relocate any you want and toss with abandon any you do not.

Of course, I'd rather be remembered with a smile when the bleeding hearts bloom, than a head scratch or frown upon finding yet another tovara offspring I've shared!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I just purchased another packet of the "Vigna Caracalla Vine" seeds. My first try was not good because I didn't nick the seeds. They are rather expensive, but I really wanted to grow this vine so I purchased 4 seeds for $7.00 dollars. I only want one vine, so if they should grow, I'll edit my "haves" on the proper thread.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Roses... nick them and soak them in water with a touch of hydrogen peroxide until they swell (like twice their starting size; you'll know when you see one do it). Warmth will help with germination also. Good luck!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I'll do that, Critter, as soon as I get them. Hopefully they won't take too long to germinate. I'll bring some even if they're only very tiny seedlings.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I was weeding around my front bed--where my big Bleeding Heart is (Thank you coleup)
and noticed a lot of little seedlings coming up under the bush.

With that in mind--I will let all the blooms go to seed this year.

Tomorrow--I will dig them up and pot the up. So--I may have a few to share???????

Gita - have to fill my window in my office!

ssgardener: Could your begonia be Begonia 'Erythrophylla' Beefsteak Begonia, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/62923/?

coleup: I didn't mean to be critical of your offering the Tovara -- that's why I pointed out that I had begged it for my own garden. But it is out of control now in my yard. I can't find all the blooms in time -- and I do try. I just wanted to issue that warning to the unsuspecting. Worse that lemon balm -- but nowhere close to my nemesis, aegepodium.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Re tovara , bishops weed, etc, well I love to hate my chocolate mint LOL

Keep meaning to say- neighbor has given me about twenty medium pots (6 inch?) with the shaped colored decor wrap on them, leftover from church flowers or something--anyone?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ROFL... I do pull back the chocolate mint every year, but I love having all down one edge of the driveway... I get out the weed whacker or mow it when it blooms, though, because I sure don't want it throwing seeds around.

While we're talking about thuggish plants... Does anybody want some Lysimachia aka "circle flower" This is *not* the invasive kind of loosestrife, it's a totally different genus, but it does spread by runners just below the surface, so it needs to be pulled every so often if you want to contain it. Burgundy leaves, yellow blooms... it's pretty! Like my "disobedient plant," I've never had a problem with it self-sowing or putting down big roots, it's just an enthusiastic spreader.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

More on the coleus... I totally goofed in calling Michelle's coleus starts "cuttings"... what I got from her last year were well rooted little plants, rootballs about what you'd expect from a 2 inch pot, and tall enough that I could take an additional cutting from the tops of most.

I don't know yet what her price is this year (although I do know she'll give us a break on price if we put in a big order), just wanted to give you an idea of the sort of selection we might expect... and shipping will add a little also... I will divide the shipping cost among all of us on a per-plant basis. She said she'd take a look and see which ones looked like they'd be good to send in time for our get-together, so hopefully we'll have a list soon.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

count me in Jill

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, I think it would depend on the variety. I just checked at my local garden center, and they're $1.49 for a 3-inch coleus, but they didn't have the really unusual varieties.

Happy_macomb, I think that's it! Or at least something very close. Except that mine is so full of thick stems that you can't even see the soil.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Happy_macomb, I just saw your haves list. I'm glad you have plenty to go around so I don't feel guilty about asking for so many! ;-)

How is Sedum Ternatum in your garden? Do you have it in the shade or can it handle full sun around here?

I'd like 2 small starts of Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' please!

Also some sweet woodruff, wood poppies, and strawberry begonias.

I'd like to try that euphorbia as well.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

ss--

I have had a beefsteak begonia for years. Love it! It grows well outside--hangs in for the
winter inside--and the grows massive while outside for the summer....
The dark, shiny leaves with the Meat-colored undersides (ahem...Beefsteak...)...it is a good
grower and easily propagated. Don't overwater. As with all Begonias--err on the dry side!

I would not say it has thick stems, though--maybe the older ones? They tend to twist and wind
and can look pretty massive.

Here is mine-----Gita

Happy - may I have some of your Polygonatum odoratum Variegatum (Solomon's Seal) please?

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes to everyone. ssgardener -- I may just get your lot to you locally rather than driving it to Pennsylvania for you to drive back! I'll see how things go!

Re the Sedum Ternatum, mine is in part shade and is absolutely stunning (I think) -- I should post a photo. It has formed a mat maybe a foot across. I don't think it can handle full sun, but I have none so I wouldn't know!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I think I have extra beefsteak begonias if anyone wants one. It looks a little ratty because I wasn't kind to it over the winter.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

The best thing about Michelle's coleus, for me at least, is that they are SUN coleus... I had them out on the sunny sunny deck last year, and they did just fine. No pressure on anybody for ordering... I want some regardless, and anybody who wants to order/ship with me is welcome to do so. I'll post information when I know more!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Speaking of ordering, I'm ordering some Camellias from Camellia Forest in the next day or so (along with ssgardener). If anyone wants to go in with us, you'll save a lot on shipping. Just dmail me.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Happy, I saw Tiarella cordifolia ‘Eco Running Tapestry’ on your list of haves, and would love to add it to my garden. Thanks, terri

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

TerrI: It is yours (I have plenty if anyone else wants it -- it is in a bed I haven't weeded yet so it may look a little battered when I bring it, but it is a very nice plant). It does wander around (hence the word "running").

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

If anyone is interested, I'm adding three heuchera 'Firefly' to my list of haves. I picked them up dirt cheap at Wal-mart. I only do the 'cool' shades in my woodland garden - purples/blues, mauves/pinks, whites, pale lemon yellow, and foliage... I should have known better with a name like 'Firefly' - when I looked it up in Plant Files when I got home, the blossoms are red. Sounds silly, but I don't like the color clash... When my Aunt Mary Lou hears me say that, she exclaims in dismay "but Terri, God made flowers in all shades of the rainbow" LOL.

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm happy to buy them from you -- I love Heuchera.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

They are yours - no need for $s, it was trivial. Believe me, the fun and diversity of plants I receive from these swaps is awesome. I am just so happy that some of the things in my garden are finally getting mature enough to divide and share, and if I pick up a bargain that ends up not working for me I'm glad that it finds a good home.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

aspenhill- its not silly- you have such a beautiful garden and house, it doesn't always happen by accident! But Send Aunt Mary Lou up to Gita's She does all colors and it looks great!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey, Sally, I heard you drove down to the nursery where speedybean works and met her. She was thrilled to meet you. That was so nice of you..hoping I can talk her into attending the swap up at Holly's.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Hi Pippi!
Hey if speedie wants to get up to my house on that day, she can carpool the rest! I have a seat for her!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Happy! Oh, you have a much too tempting list... I'd love a start of the Yellow Corydalis, please... lost my little patch of it, and the foliage is so cute! Also, if you have plenty of the following, I could find a place for any of them... I finally have some shady spots to plant!

Yellow Corydalis
Bleeding Heart babies
Geranium macrorrhizum 'Ingwersen's Variety',
Polygonatum odoratum Variegatum (Solomon's Seal) (Chantell)
Stylophorum diphyllum (Wood Poppy) (ssgardener)
Hosta 'Ginko Craig'

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Of course -- so funny about the Corydalis -- I got it from you!

I just yesterday divided a lot of the Geranium and it is looking awful -- hopefully it'll perk up. It is tough stuff.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Holly are all your Hellebores spoken for? and what color are they?
